Dopo aver completato la guerra civile americana, i membri del Gun-Club, i produttori di fucili, sono nulla a che fare. Barbicane Impey, presidente dell'associazione ha un'idea per sollevare il loro spirito: egli propone la costruzione di un gigantesco cannone per inviare un razzo sulla luna. Insieme con il segretario, J. T. Maston, e dopo essere stato informato dei dettagli osservatorio astronomico di Cambridge, deve risolvere una serie di aspetti: la natura del canyon, la forma a proiettile e la dimensione, il tipo e la quantità di polvere da sparo, la posizione del sito di lancio, società di finanziamento, ecc

La fattibilità del progetto è interrogato dal capitano Nicholl, un acerrimo nemico di Barbicane (se il secondo è un costruttore di missili, è la prima armatura e scudi).

Dopo aver ottenuto il denaro in una sottoscrizione internazionale, il cannone gigante è gettato a terra della Florida. Improvvisamente, vi è un francese, Michel Ardan, con il desiderio di viaggiare nel proiettile.

Dopo uno scontro drammatico tra Barbicane e Nicholl, Ardan li convince a dimenticare le loro liti e che viaggiano con lui alla luna. Il proiettile viene modificato per consentire ai passeggeri di sopravvivere al viaggio.

Prima di essere rilasciato JTMaston soggiorni di pochi giorni, una volta che la loro missione aveva guadagnato.

Tenía yo de ocho a diez años y casi casi deseaba que hubiese siquiera un poquito de guerra, porque siempre estaba oyendo hablar de ella, y envidiaba a los que la habían conocido.
-¿Qué es guerra?- había preguntado a mi madre. Y ésta me había contestado: -Hijo, Dios nos libre de ella; porque la guerra es matarse los hombres unos a otros. -Pues mi hermano y yo no nos matamos ni matamos a nadie, y siempre está usted diciendo que somos muy guerreros y que damos mucha guerra. Mi madre se echó a reír al oír esta observación mía, y lejos de rechazarla, pareció confirmarla dándome un beso apretado y chillado, que es cosa rica.
Este proceder de mi madre, que al parecer no podía influir en mi criterio, influyó no poco, pues me hizo dudar más y más de que la guerra fuese matarse los hombres unos a otros y los guerreros fuesen una especie de fieras.
