故事敘述柳毅是品行正直而講義氣的書生，考試落第返鄉途中，遇見了在荒郊野外獨自牧羊的龍女，聽完龍女悲慘的遭遇後，有著正義感的柳毅，帶著龍女所交予他的信物至洞庭湖會­見龍王。錢塘龍王一聽其姪女遭遇，憤而殺至涇陽，手仞涇陽二太子，並帶回龍女。龍女因為柳毅的傳書而得救，最終兩人結成連理。

禪！不可說？可說？
什麼是禪？
達摩祖師面壁九年，參的就是「禪」，等到他出關時，九年的精華卻只用四句偈說透── 「不立文字，教外別傳，直指人心，見性成佛。」不立文字是禪，教外別傳是禪，直指人心是禪，見性成佛也是禪，但你真懂達摩說的禪了嗎？
聖嚴法師說：「請你不要以好奇的心理來探索禪的內容，因為禪不是東方人帶來的一樁新事物，自從有了空間和時間以來，禪就普遍地存在於無窮大的空間與無限長的時間之中。」
所以，隨處都是禪，在於你是不是能體會。
五十六則小故事，有＜火神來求火＞、有＜趙州問趙州＞、有＜進退兩難＞、還有＜尼姑變和尚＞……。《禪說》讓你在繁忙的生活中體會美妙的禪境。
如果你期待「禪」能說什麼？那它便什麼都沒說。如果你又說「禪」什麼都沒說，那它又什麼都說了。那麼，「禪」究竟是說了？還是沒說？
從釋迦牟尼佛在禪定中證得無上的智慧以來，禪更成為一個修行的法門。在每一個人的修行過程中都在問「什麼是『禪』？」千年以來沒有人能像數學家那樣寫出一段求解的公式：X＋Y－Z＝禪；更沒有人能像生物學家那樣定義出禪的基因圖譜。成道的佛陀，衪在靈山上拈花微笑，說出「實相無相，微妙法門，不立文字，教外別傳」這樣的傳承。禪宗初祖達摩祖師面壁九年修習禪法，留下了「不立文字，教外別傳，直指人心，見性成佛。」這樣的字句。二祖慧可在達摩面前只是虔敬禮拜什麼都沒說的修禪心得，卻是達摩肯定的禪法精髓。經過三祖僧璨、四祖道信、五祖弘忍到六祖慧能的「菩提本無樹，明鏡亦非台；本來無一物，何處惹塵埃」，「禪」依舊是「禪」，依舊如佛經上所說的「不可說不可說微妙之法」。
既然「禪」不可說，又何來「禪說」？
「禪」之不可說是因為「禪」不能執著於文字，所以不可說；禪之可說是因為人人可以達到禪的境界只是不得其門而入，需要鑰匙來啟動，所以必須說。深埋地底的寶藏如果沒有藏寶圖，這世界就從來不會有人知道地底有寶藏，更無從找起。如果「禪」全然的不可說，就像沒有藏寶圖的寶藏，對寶藏而言存在也等於沒有存在，寶藏的價值也就完全無法作用。有藏寶圖的寶藏才能指引人找到寶藏，所以「禪」不可說，但又可說。
不可說的「禪」怎麼說？
「禪」不可說？那麼歷代的禪師又是如何來說禪？在六祖慧能以前，「禪」的修行是一脈的傳承，到了六祖慧能開始，禪宗發揚光大。於是有棒喝、機鋒、參話頭、參公案，到了現代有禪坐、動禪、打禪七、修禪……等等。歷代以來各家說「禪」、解「禪」、話「禪」、問「禪」，始終像孫猴子逃不出如來佛的手掌心，「禪」再怎麼說，仍然是「禪」。
《禪說》怎麼說「禪」？蔡志忠如何用他的生花妙筆，帶你進入「禪」的境界？你不能說我的「禪」，正如我不能代替你看這本──《禪說》。所以不可說的「禪」怎麼說？就自己看吧。
