Eichah (Lamentations) (v. 2.0)

ZigZag, Inc. опубликовал приложение 2012-08-22
(обновлено 2012-08-22)

Eichah (Lamentations) cries out through time, engulfing the reader in the loss of a city and her people. This ancient poem transcends history, connecting the human tragedy with a call to remember, and to renew faith. The fully pointed Hebrew text is accompanied by a classic English translation.

The Eichah (Lamentations) app provides the full Hebrew text, with vowels and cantillation marks, of Megillat Eichah, with an English translation based on the translation done by the Jewish Publication Society in 1917. We have updated the English text to replace thee and thou, hast and didst, and other similar archaisms. The app also includes background and descriptive materials about Eichah, its liturgical use on Tisha b'Av (Ninth of Av), and related customs.

The text of Eichah can be viewed with Hebrew and English side-by-side (in either portrait or landscape mode), or in Hebrew or English only. The text is laid out with Hebrew verse numbers for the Hebrew text and regular numbers for the English text. You can view any chapter using the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen, and then scroll to any verse in the chapter. When both Hebrew and English are displayed together, the scrolling stays synchronized verse by verse.

The text can be resized (seven sizes), and provides exceptional readability on any screen, whatever the resolution. Use the menu to change the font size.

A calendar function displays the Gregorian date of Tisha b'Av for any year from 1900 onward. Tap the calendar icon on the main screen to open the calendar function. Turn the year digits to choose a year. Tap the social icon on the main screen to share a message about Tisha b'Av with your friends.

Ma Nishtana (v. 1.0)

ZigZag, Inc. опубликовал приложение 2011-11-02
(обновлено 2011-11-02)

Get ready for the Passover seder by learning to read the Ma Nishtana in Hebrew! Now the robot in your Android(TM) device can help you learn how to pronounce each word of the Ma Nishtana, in the Sephardic robotic style. (Okay, we just made that up.) In no time at all, you'll be reading the Ma Nishtana better than a robot!

The robot voice was produced by the Text-to-Speech system for Android devices. It has a vaguely American accent. The text of the Ma Nishtana is in the Ashkenaz tradition.

The Hebrew text is displayed with the Hebrew in Hand Traditional font. The text is sized to fit your screen, and it is clear and easy-to-read. All vowels (nekudot) are accurately placed. (Would a robot expect less?)

Study each section by tapping a word to hear it. Then say the word by yourself. Use the play button to listen to each section in its entirety, and follow the reading as each word is highlighted. This app reinforces the right-to-left directionality for Hebrew reading.

The Ten Commandments app displays the Hebrew Ten Commandments with full cantillation marks for both public reading and private study.

This app demonstrates the Hebrew in Hand technology from ZigZag, Inc. for Hebrew rendering on mobile devices. Hebrew in Hand provides complete, self-contained support for re-sizable, re-flowable, Hebrew/Yiddish and mixed-language text, and can be ported to many platforms. It includes:

• Hebrew fonts in multiple sizes designed especially for small displays;
• a proprietary text layout procedure for positioning Hebrew letters, vowels and cantillation marks;
• an implementation of the Unicode bidirectional algorithm for ordering mixed right-to-left and left-to-right text;
• line wrap logic to fit text to the particular display being used;
• expandable text sections, for reducing scrolling by allowing users to open parts of a text only if they are interested.

The Hebrew in Hand Traditional font, which can be viewed in seven sizes in this app, provides exceptional readability on any screen, whatever the resolution. Use the menu to
