The accelerometer may stop or give false readings when the screen goes to standby mode in some phone models or OS versions. Below is a non-complete list of models that may suffer from this defect:

HTC Hero, HTC Eris, HTC Magic, HTC Legend, HTC Desire, HTC Incredible, HTC Avia, Motorola Milestone, Motorola Droid X,
Nexus One, Evo 4g, and ZTE Blade.
