This app allows the user to use their phone as a launching device for simulated siege weaponry. The calculated points of landing are drawn on a map.

The user can select between a trebuchet (catapult), an English longbow, or a modern mortar.

All the trajectories are calculated based on the exact angle and direction the phone is pointing when the launch button is tapped.

Hitting a target takes some practice.

A target can be marked as a bulls-eye. The relative elevations of source and target can be considered.

There is a visual reference section describing the three weapons.

Little Dipper (v. 1.2)

This app measures and records geological dip and strike and automatically emails a geo-tagged summary of the observation.

Comments can be added verbally.

Bixi Land (v. 1.2)

The Bixi Land app shows a map of all the Montreal Bixi docking stations, The mapped locations are colour-coded to indicate whether there are bikes and/or spaces available. The station status is updated in real-time.

The extensive Montreal Island bike path network is traced on the underlying map.

Tapping a button centers the map to the rider's true GPS position.

The app will locate the closest docking station and then shows its current status in a pop-up box.

There is also a brief explanation of the Bixi price calculations, which can be confusing to the new user.

Hill Climber (v. 2.0)

This app maps and measures hikes or bicycle rides. The emphasis is on elevation, with several useful features.

The app provides current elevation, and touch elevation for any point tapped on the map.

A map and log of each trek can be saved and easily retrieved later. The trek logs the elevation at every automatic waypoint and also tracks the total rise and drop and of a journey. These trek logs and maps can also be copied, modified or even created manually from scratch.

The app can also build an elevation grid for an area up to 2 miles square surrounding the hiker. (This works for the USA only.)

These elevation features do not rely on the phone's error-prone internal sensor, but instead use a more accurate location-based database lookup.

A useful feature called GeoNote allows the convenient automatic emailing of verbally-entered  and geographically-tagged comments and observations. These are sent to a preselected email address and include your current position marked on a linked Google Maps page. GeoNote can also be used to share field position with another user of the app.

Mom's Taxi (v. 1.8)

This app acts like your own taxi meter to estimate what the taxi fare would be for any given drive you take. You click the START button to begin the fare and the STOP button to end it and see the tariff.

There are four dropdown menus at the top which can be reset before starting, should you wish to customize the billing rates. As is, the rate charged is a base fee of $3.00, plus $2.50 per mile (same as about $1.50/km.), a time charge of $.35 per minute, and a possible extra charge (which by default is set to $0).

There is also a button at the lower left which turns off the GPS location seeking if you just want to try out a route on the map. In this use, the mileage rate is increased by 40% to compensate for the time charge of an actual fare.

The app is designed to work with the phone's location settings switched on for both Use Satellites and Use Wireless. However establishing a satellite GPS connection requires a view of the sky, and even then may sometimes take up to five minutes to stabilize enough for the app to work properly.

You can check if a location has been found by opening the built-in Google maps application and checking of a blue triangle has yet appeared, which denotes a signal has been established.

After you are finished using the app, you should turn off the Use Satellite location setting as it uses more battery power.

Real Estate USA (v. 1.1)

This app displays real estate listings for the street or postal code where you are, or for any selected location (in the USA only).

This app also contains the GeoNote feature by which you can automatically send geo-tagged emails to a preset recipient address. These comments can be entered verbally and are converted to text. The emails sent include a link to a Google Map page with your location at the time of the message marked with a green tag.

Ottawa Heritage Tour (v. 1.7)

This app is a detailed guide to 250 heritage buildings near downtown Ottawa. The app can be used on-site or remotely to virtually tour Ottawa.

There are six recommended walking tours, also background reference on many architectural styles and architects.

It includes many features such as automatic linking with StreetView and Google directions.

There are several ways to access the underlying site descriptions, based on style, street, architect, proximity and name.

The app is designed for a large screen Android device running 2.2 or higher.

The app includes hundreds of photographs and can be saved on the SD card to conserve memory and improve performance.

This app is fourth in a series of heritage walking tours. The previous three featured Montreal's Square Mile, Halifax's South End and Lunenburg's UNESCO area.

Lunenburg Heritage Buildings (v. 1.4)

This app is a feature-filled walking tour guide to 160 heritage buildings in the Old Town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its unusual and old residential architecture.

Each site has a photo and description. There are visual references to architectural styles, sliding panoramas of the major streets, a recommended route, and links to reviews of local restaurants and accommodation. Also a feature allows automatic retrieval of nearby real estate listings.

The app shows your location in real time over a satellite view map image. Clicking an icon brings up a description of the nearest interesting building to where you are standing.

The app can be used remotely to study Lunenburg from afar and links with StreetView.

Halifax Heritage Building Tour (v. 2.0)

A walking guide to over 350 heritage buildings near Downtown Halifax. By clicking an icon, a description and picture of the nearest site appear.

The app has many features useful to those interested in historic Halifax architecture, such as integration with Google Directions and StreetView. There are reference sections on the styles and architects, and alternate methods for selecting the site records.

The app can be used remotely for a virtual tour, or with the phone GPS for an actual walkabout.

Four walks are detailed which pass many of the best sites, each tour taking a couple of hours. Three begin at the Pier 21 cruise ship dock, the fourth begins at the Old Town Clock below Citadel Hill Fortress.

The guide is aimed at devoted fans of heritage architecture and goes well beyond the obvious localities most visited by tourists.

The very old Schmidtville neighbourhood, the grand Queen Anne homes of the Deep South End, and the West End district with many Arts and Crafts homes are all included. It is probably the most extensive guide to the Halifax sites available in any format, including printed form.

Even for someone raised in the city, Halifax will never look quite the same after taking these tours.

The app is designed for a device with a screen size at least 3.7 inches, such as a Nexus One. The app will not work properly on a phone with a small screen. (Most of the pages are designed for portrait view only.)

This app includes hundreds of pictures of the sites which results in a fairly large app size.

A recent update now allows installation onto the the SD card.

GeoNote (v. 1.1)

This is a very handy app.

GeoNote records geo-tagged walking observations. It automatically sends short or verbally-entered notes with GPS coordinates to a preset home email.

Received emails have a link to Google Maps with an icon marking the precise location from which the note was sent. This forms a permanent record. (Satellite location setting must be switched on.)

The email is only set once when the app is first installed. After that, it is automatic.

My own use of this app is to record the locations of mineral occurrences and natural phenomenon I observe while walking in the countryside. I also use GeoNote to tag the location of maintenance issues on my woodlot olutside the city.

The app can also be used for travellers to keep track of each other's location. By setting your companion's Gmail as the recipient address, and tapping the message button occasionally, the other person sees your current location on a map on their phone. This comes in handy if you are separated in a busy city or a wooded area.
