Australian Birding Checklist full version

This is one of a series of Birding Checklist applications for Android mobile phones and tablets.  There are applications for Australia, New Zealand, United States (excluding Mexico and South America), Western Palearctic (UK and Europe), Norfolk and Lord Howe Island, and Ecuador/Peru/Bolivia.

*** PHOTOS & SOUNDS *** These are downloaded separately, and must be manually installed via your PC.  Please check the Readme file at this download website so you know how to do this. The photos and sounds are NOT included in the download package from the Android market.  It is recommended that you test the download and install process with the demo version first, then upgrade to the full version when you have confirmed that it is working.

*** If you have problems please email me (contact details in the About window of the application).  I am unable to respond to questions in the market review comments.

Download website for Australian version:
https://drivehq.com/folder/p8339000.aspx

Australia – 892 species and 431 subspecies

These applications include basic bird identification information, and are NOT intended to replace a field guide.  It is expected that users will have good familiarity with the birds they are seeing, and will use this application for:
a. Logging bird sightings (with GPS co-ordinates if your phone has a GPS)
b. Uploading your sightings to eBird (or similar PC or online recording system)
c. Maintaining your Lifelist

Full versions have the following features:
- complete listing of all bird species and subspecies (where known)
- searching and filtering of the bird list
- statistics and record of your personal bird Lifelist
- current tick list (birds you have seen today or during a short field trip)
- quick lists for customised bird listings for locations your frequently visit
- display of bird photos and bird calls on the SD card linked to the application (these must be manually downloaded separately)
- logging facilities including GPS location (if your phone has a GPS)
- export log file in eBird Import format for rapid loading of your sightings to eBird
- optional downloadable Rangemaps and extended text descriptions (incomplete but growing collection on external download site)
- help information
- play mp4 videos of birds stored in the photos folder on the SD card
- support for large screen 1280 x 800 tablets

Demo versions have reduced functionality:
- cannot save lifelist, sighting logs or statistics
- will not display rangemaps or extended descriptions
- do not display ticklists for regions
- no GPS location display on Google maps
- no alternate language support
- no quicklists (custom filtering of bird lists for your location)
- no mp4 video support

You can easily add your own resources files – the application places no restriction on this but very large numbers of photos (many thousands) may slow down the application.

Please contact me if you have any comments or suggestions, or corrections to the bird information.  Please also get in contact if you are interested in helping create a new birding checklist application for birds in your area.

This is just for fun! Now you can insult your mates using real bird names. There are over 50 birds, and if they think you are making the names up there is a photo to prove it!

Speaks the birds names using the text-to-speech converter.  If you haven't used text-to-speech before it may not be installed on your phone, so go to Settings - Voice input & Output and check the Text-to-Speech settings before installing (it is free to download and install from the Android market).

If this awakens your interest in more serious birding, check out my Birding Checklist applications.

Have fun!!!

WP & UK Birding Checklist (v. 1.6)

Duncan Watson опубликовал приложение 2012-04-27
(обновлено 2012-04-27)

Western Palearctic Birding Checklist (full version).
(Includes the UK)

This is one of a series of Birding Checklist applications for Android mobile phones and tablets.  There are demo and full versions of each checklist application, those currently available are:

Western Palearctic (includes UK) – 924 species and 1188 subspecies
US – 1040 species and 15 subspecies (does not include Mexico or Central America)
Australia – 892 species and 431 subspecies
NZ – 377 species and 63 subspecies
Norfolk Is (155 sp, 5 subsp) and Lord Howe Is (164 sp, 3 subsp)

These applications include basic bird identification information, but are NOT intended to replace a field guide.  It is expected that users will have good familiarity with the birds they are seeing, and will use this application for:

a. Logging bird sightings (with GPS co-ordinates if your phone has a GPS)
b. Optionally uploading your sightings to eBird
c. Maintaining your Lifelist

The list of features varies slightly between checklists, and the demo versions are less functional.  The demo versions have the following capability:
- complete listing of all bird species for the area
- searching and filtering the bird list
- statistics recording your personal lifelist
- current tick list (for birds you have seen today or during a field trip)
- display of bird photos and bird calls on the SD card linked to the application (these must be manually downloaded separately)
- logging facilities including GPS location (if your phone has a GPS) and optional fields for Heard, Photographed, Video'd, Taped and numbers of Male, Female, Juvenile or Dead birds found
- export log file in eBird Import format for rapid loading of your sightings to eBird
- help information for most screens

The full version has the following additional capabilities:
- faster operation
- more complete bird listing including subspecies
- better display of data from log files
- filtering of birds by region (for WP the regions are UK, Europe, Scandinavia, Balkans, Middle East, Eastern Europe, Iceland, North Africa, Cape Verde, Azores, Madeira, Canaries)
- Google map showing location of bird from GPS co-ordinates
- optional Rangemaps and extended bird description information (these must be downloaded manually and installed on the SD card, as for the photos and bird calls)
- play mp4 videos of birds stored in the photos folder on the SD card
- screen layouts for 1280 x 800 tablets
- plot GPS co-ordinates (eg of a bird location) on Google Maps
- Quick lists - create, save and restore customised filters for the main bird listing

In short, the demo version is for you to verify that the checklist will meet your needs. Future enhancements will only apply to the full version.

For the bird photos and sound files (and optional descriptions, rangemaps and video samples) you must download the files to your PC, unzip, and copy them to the SD card or internal memory of your phone.  For the WP checklist these files can be found here (includes a readme file with more detailed instructions):

https://drivehq.com/folder/p8404317.aspx

You are free to add your own resources files – the application places no restriction on this but very large numbers of photos (ie many thousands) will start slowing the application down.

Please contact me if you have any comments or suggestions, or corrections to the bird information.  Please also get in contact if you are interested in helping create a new birding checklist application for birds in your area.

A simple calculator but with the advantage of showing simultaneously the same number in Decimal, Octal, Hex and Binary.  Optional base 3-9 capability (replaces octal). Most calculators display only a single row of digits - this one displays four lines.

63-bit capability.  Calculator functions AND, OR, XOR, NOT and Shift included. Copy and paste to clipboard.

It is designed for the buttons to be pressed on the screen - doesn't work with a keyboard (no plans to support hardware keyboard; please use the buttons on the screen).

Requires Android 1.6 and above. Full functionality both portrait and landscape on large screen tablet devices.

Some functions may be added on request - feel free to email me with comments or suggestions (ASCII support is under consideration).  Thanks for the feedback so far.
