Your phone knows its location by trangulating the position of several GPS Satellites.  Use GPSView to see where these GPS Satellites are.

When a GPS signal is detected by your phone, a satellite will appear on the map.  The position of the satellite is calculated as the spot on earth that the satellite is directly above.  More information for how this is calculated can be found on this blog post.

Hi John (February 8, 2011), I had to use the location to get the satellite azimuth and elevation.  There really is no other way.

Ever been in the situation where you want to tell your friend where you are?  Maybe you tell them an intersection over the phone, or text them an address. But, they don't know the area either so they type that into Google maps.  Well, we have a solution for you.

Use FriendFlare to send your current location to your friends via text message. Just select a friend from your address book and press "Send Location". Your friend will receive a link that lets them view your current location on Google Maps.
