바다와 커피
바다와 맞닿은 하늘, 발 아래 부서지는 파도, 갈매기의 날개짓, 지평선을 가르는 어선들, 바람이 차게 느껴져 산책로를 따라 걷는다. 코 끝을 스치는 익숙한 향을 따라 걷다보니 작은 커피가 보인다. 커피향이 바닷가 마을 전체를 에워싸고 메운다. 바다 내음과 섞인 커피 향이 내 오감을 자극한다. 바다를 향해 열린 창가에 앉아 커피를 마신다. 왠지 모를 허전함이 사라지고 마음속부터 따뜻함이 전해져온다. 파도소리와 함께 맡는 커피향, 나를 바다로 이끈 건 아마도 이들이었나 보다.

그리움의 도시, 강릉
강릉에서 마시는 커피는 이상하리 만큼 그리움을 부른다. 함께 찻잔을 기울이던 친구도 보고 싶고 따뜻한 어깨를 빌려주던 그 누군가도 떠오른다. 달그락 찻잔 소리와 함께 소곤거리던 친구와의 대화가 떠오르고 바다를 담은 넓은 창으로 스며들어오던 솔향기도 느껴진다. 무슨 이야기를 나누었는지는 잘 기억나지 않지만 따뜻했던 커피 향은 지금도 입안을 맴돈다. 강릉은 커피향 가득한 그리움의 도시다. 강릉에서는 누구나 그리운 그 무엇에 흠뻑 빠져도 좋다.

맛있는 커피를 만나는 행운
커피를 좋아하지만 늘 맛있는 커피를 만나게 되는 건 아니다. 원두의 상태, 로스팅 정도, 물의 온도, 내리는 사람의 손맛 등 커피 맛을 좌우하는 요소가 무궁무진하다. 그 모든 조건이 딱 맞았을 때에야 궁극의 맛있는 커피를 만났다는 즐거움의 탄성을 지를수 있다. 그런 행운을 만나게 되었을 때 커피는 단순히 사람을 만나는 자리를 채워주는 음료가 아니다. 온전히 커피만을 위한 시간을 만끽한다. 점점 줄어드는 커피를 아쉬워하며 마지막 한방울까지 맛을 놓치지 않으려 오감을 세운다. 맛있는 커피를 만나게 되는 건 소울메이트를 만나는 것과도 어렵고 힘든 일이다. 그 행운의 순간을 위해 오늘도 커피를 마신다. 어느곳에서 어떤 모습으로 만나게 될지 모르기에 기다림만큼 즐거움도 더 커진다.

소나무와 호수 사이로 커피향이 흐른다.
오늘도 많은 사람들이 소나무 숲 사이를 걷는다. 더 많은 사람들이 경포 호숫가를 달린다. 강릉 사람들의 일상을 함께 하는 소나무와 호수! 자연과 시민이 함께 하는 그 정다운 공간을 커피향이 함께한다. 적당히 마시면 사람들에게 활력을 주고 힘을 주는 음료. 바닷가 옆 소나무 숲 아래, 호숫가를 지나는 산책길에는 오늘도 커피향이 흐른다. 언제부턴가 경포 소나무 숲을 보며 지구 반대편 남아메리카의 어느 커피 농장을 떠올리게 된다.

커피에는 친구가 많다.
사람도 혼자는 외롭듯이 커피도 친구와 함께 하면 더 다양하게 즐길 수 있다. 마주 앉아 커피를 마셔주는 친구도 좋고 커피와 함께 하면 풍미를 더 풍부하게 해주는 커피의 친구들도 좋다. 달콤 쌉싸름한 초콜릿 한 조각이 커피의 색다른 맛을 끌어내고, 알맞게 첨가된 위스키 몇 방울이 전혀 새로운 커피의 맛을 끌어낸다. 때론 달콤하게 때론 진하게 커피 슈가부터 각설탕까지 세상에서 가장 스위티한 커피를 만나게 해준다. 무엇보다 커피는 우유와 만나면 새롭게 변신한다. 검은 커피와 흰 우유가 만나 세상에서 가장 맛있는 색깔로 바뀐다. 때론 오로지 커피 본연의 맛에 빠져보는 것도 좋다. 그럴 땐 마주 앉아 그 검고 뜨거운 커피의 유혹에 함께 빠져줄 누군가와 함께 한다면 더 이상 바랄게 없을 것이다. 누군가와 함께 할 때 가장 맛있는 커피를 만날 수 있다.

강릉에서 커피를 마신다는 것
강릉의 커피 향은 해가 갈수록 그 향이 점점 더 짙어지고 있다. 단순히 커피를 즐기는 사람들이 아니라 커피 생두를 직접 볶고, 갈아서 한 방울 한 방울 내려 마시며 생의 즐거움을 느끼는 사람들이 늘어 난 것이다.! 강릉에서 커피 미학(美學)에 빠진 사람들만 해도 5천명이 넘는다. 커피를 직접 볶아 쓰는 로스터리 커피숍도 20곳 가까이 되고 풍경 좋은 바닷가를 따라 들어선 커피숍 도 수십 개에 이른다. 그 유명한 별다방, 콩다방도 없는 작은 소도시에 커피 마니아가 많다는 것만으로도 주목받을 만한 일이다. 그래서일까? 오늘도 강릉 고유의 커피 향을 맛보기 위해 강릉을 찾는 커피 마니아들이 발길이 줄을 잇고 있다


커피를 직접 볶는 사람들의 커피이야기
강릉이 커피 중심도시로 떠오를 수 있었던 이유 중의 하나가 국내 최고의 로스팅 전문가들이 강릉에 있다는 점. 그래서인지 다른 지역과 달리 처음 부터 로스팅 전문의 커피하우스들이 많다는 것이 강릉 커피의 특징이다. 수확과정은 지켜보지 못하지만 생두를 수입해 직접 로스팅하면서 사람들은 커피 원두 본연의 맛을 되살리는 즐거움을 맛본다. 커피를 직접 볶는 사람들은 단순한 커피마니아가 아니라 커피의 갈색 매력에 중독된 사람들이다. 싱싱하고 좋은 원두를 구하는 일부터 정성을 다해 볶고 자신만의 노하우로 추출해 한 잔의 맛있는 커피를 만든다. 자신이 내린 커피에 좋은 향과 맛과 기를 담아, 마시는 이가 온전히 그것들을 느끼고 함께 소통하길 바란다. 그들이야말로 진정한 커피애호가들이다
