Hidden from everyone's eyes, these majestic remnants are all what's left of the coal mines that used to be the backbone of the Japanese industry. Take a closer look at the majesty of these ruins, from the Haboro Coal Mine hidden deep in the woods, to the sunken Asano Uryu facility or the Honbetsu Coal Mine, once known for its colossal vertical mine shaft.

For thousands of years the people of the Chinese province of Yunnan have been cultivating mountain tops, building ridges and diverting water to build their rice fields. The sight of the Yunnan fields, so reminiscent of Japan, often brings up feelings of nostalgia and admiration for the unimaginable toil and magnificence of this land's pioneers. Since first laying eyes on these terraced fields in 93, I've travelled across Japan and Asia immortalizing their beauty and their people. Please enjoy these photographs taken in Egypt, China, Indonesia and in Japan.

Surreal and photogenic. Such can only be said about these collected photographs of fluorite. It comes in many shapes and colors, including purple, green, brown, yellow and colorless. It's still the same fluorite so where does this diversity come from? It's a mystery to be sure.
In Europe these natural stones have been praised for their beauty for centuries, but not in the sense of the Japanese "suiseki," the art of stone appreciation. Fluorite is a collectors' stone, one of the most popular of its kind in the world. It's as clear and beautiful as precious stones, but not as hard as rubies, sapphires or diamonds, which is why it doesn't end up in rings or necklaces. Fluorite is appreciated by collectors for its natural shape cultivated deep in the bowels of the Earth.
The other thing that keeps attracting collectors to fluorite is its varied coloration which can change and produce different hues of fluorescence if you observe it under an UV light.
But that's not the only mysterious thing about fluorite, which you might be interested to know can illuminate the darkness by glowing like a firefly under higher temperatures or pressure. That is why the Japanese call it "Hotaruishi" – the firefly stone.

Tasmania is an island off the south east coast of Australia. Only a little smaller than Hokkaido, 1/3rd of it is covered by a national park and designated World Heritage sites of the unspoiled Tasmanian wilderness. The island is located in what is known as the "Rolling Forty," the heavy storm zone around the 40S parallel. What sets Tasmania apart from continental Australia are the island's regular four seasons (with snowfall in the winter), or the 270 days/year rainfall in the heart of the state. Due to that, Tasmania has developed a magnificent ecosystem not seen anywhere else in the world. Filming amidst Tasmania's magnificent forests, one really feels a connection with the great will of Mother Earth.
