B.E.D. Calculator (v. 1.0)

Using the LQ method, the B.E.D. Calculator allows you to compare up to three different fractionation schemes in one view.  Either select a structure from the drop down list with a predefined α/β ratio and endpoint or input your own custom α/β ratio.  The B.E.D. Calculator is a great tool for both the student and the practitioner for evaluating dose schemes quickly when a computer may not be nearby.
First, select the desired organ with predefined α/β ratio or input your own custom α/β ratio.  Next input a dose per fraction and then a total number of fractions.  Select the “Add Course” button and the B.E.D. is automatically displayed below.  Input up to three different dose schemes in one view and view the resulting B.E.D. instantly.  Having three different schemes available at once will allow you to compare the doses delivered for varying dose rates and decide their effectiveness.  The B.E.D. Calculator will also automatically sum all courses in one view should you wish to view a cumulative dose to a structure perhaps given dose in previous courses of therapy.
The B.E.D. Calculator will allow up to three different dose schemes on one view and will also let you add two more additional views to calculate B.E.D.’s.  The calculations do not persist.  Any data you input will be cleared once the program is stopped.  The data however will remain there for you to view as long as you do not manually close the application.  The α/β ratio can be changed from course to course within a view; however you must remember that any summations with different α/β ratios are not correct.  The summation feature only adds the resulting numbers in a column and therefore only provides a valid number when α/β ratios used for each course are the same.  An instance where this may be useful could be if a person received “X” dose of radiation to their spinal cord from previous XRT.  You could input the dose to the spinal cord delivered for the previous treatments and then input the additional dose the proposed treatment would give the spinal cord using the spinal cord α/β ratio. The summation of the proposed total dose to spinal cord could then be viewed and then compared to a published lifetime allowance to help determine if the retreatment course could be used.
Each course that is input will not be calculated until the “Add Course” button is selected.  By selecting the “Remove Course” button, the last course entered is cleared.  There is also a soft key feature that will clear all courses on the current view or all courses on all three views.  The α/β ratios and endpoints used for the organs listed are averages of published data and may not be the precise ratio you would like to use for your purposes.  Selecting the “Custom” organ feature from the list will allow you to type in your own a/b ratio to be used in the calculation.  Also, a α/β ratio of 10 for Tumor dose is the default selection as most calculations would probably be done to determine tumor dose.
The results provided by the B.E.D. Calculator should not be used as the sole determination of any treatment of a patient.  The B.E.D. Calculator should be used as a teaching tool and a comparison tool for fractionation schemes.  The user should understand the limitations of the LQ method as it relates to dose schemes and use the information provided by the B.E.D. Calculator appropriately.

MOWA - Mobile Wound Analyzer (v. 1.4)

Mowa is a mobile software suitable for pressure ulcer treatment.

Its purpose is to provide nurses and doctors with a pocket, accessible and easy instrument able to evaluate, treat and observe lesions and pressure ulcers.

Mowa can facilitate the treatment of pressure ulcer lesions.

With Mowa it is possible to:

-> Analyze pressure ulcers starting from stage II on (according to EPUAP – NPUAP classification);

-> Take a picture of the pressure ulcer or import a JPG image from a gallery;

-> Analyze the three tissues of a pressure ulcer and calculate their percentage:

• Necrotic tissue    (black)
• Fibrinous tissue   (yellow)
• Granulation tissue (red)

-> Measure pressure ulcer area in cm² from a minimum of 2 mm to a maximum 300 mm;

-> Determine other features like the exudate amount, the presence of infection, of haemorrhage, and the depth of the lesions;

-> Prescribe a medical treatment in compliance with LG EPUAP – NPUAP (first- and second-line medication);

-> Prescribe the frequence of the medical treatment;

-> Print a summary pdf file with all the information about the exam and the pressure ulcer images;

-> Keep stored jpg and pdf files on sdcard in the MOWA folder.

-> Share results with other MOWA users sending them jpg and pdf read-only files;

-> Formulate healing hypothesis analyzing two or more MOWA investigations carried out in different moments;

TEST
MOWA has already analyzed different kinds of pressure ulcers from Stage II on (EPUAP – NPUAP) in different parts of the human body, employing camera and web images. It has been used to evaluate necrotic, fibrinous, granulating and mixed tissues, infected,  hemorrhagic and deep ulcers, with different amounts of exudate and eschars.

OBSERVATIONS
With MOWA, a pressure ulcer takes a different aspect and color. It is more "pleasant" for human eyes.

ADVANTAGES
Doctor activities are reduced to the bare minimum. He has to:

• calculate the size of the lesion with a tape measure;
• determine the amount of exudate (null, poor, moderate or high), the presence of infection or haemorrage, and its depth.
