I have been informed that the following apps have added support for Presto:
- BeyondPod
- DoggCatcher
- PodTrapper
- Pocket Casts
The Presto developer is a different developer from those applications. Those developers are not responsible for Presto's implementation, bugs, or cost.
Presto is still in beta. Bugs are listed at the end of this description. Please e-mail me if you find new bugs. I apologize for the lack of updates; I bit off way more than I can chew this semester. Work is ongoing, but I can only spare a few hours at a time on some Mondays. Please be patient.
Apps using Presto must be restarted after upgrading Presto.
Download problems are a problem with the Android Market, not with Presto. See these pages for potential solutions:

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android+Market/thread?tid=57b5e3efa7477b50
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1996#makechanges
For developers: See the home page for nearly drop-in code that replaces android.media.MediaPlayer, using Presto when available, or gracefully degrading to use the default Android MediaPlayer when not.
Known bugs (please e-mail me if you find any new ones or any of these impact you too severely; I have no means to respond to Market comments). Asterisks (*) indicate bugs that have not been observed in a while; please e-mail me if you encounter them so I can confirm they are not fixed.
#18 - ANR In BeyondPod
#36* - Self-Combined Files With Chapters Don't Work
#45 - Potential Infinite Recursion When Erroring
#48 - Only Signed 16 MP3s Work
#49 - Blogtalk radio media files duration calculated as twice as long as it actually is
#51 - PodTrapper Only Reaches 99% Progress
#62 - Very Large (> 100 MB) Files May Not Play at Variant Speeds
#71 - Crash When Bluetooth Connected/Disconnected
#73 - UnsatisfiedLinkError causes force close
Remember that sending an e-mail is a lot more likely to get a problem fixed than anything else (such as posting a comment).
Internet access is necessary to play files from the Internet; before ICS, this was inherited from the calling app, but ICS changed this.

[2013-08-13] A Google User: Don't buy! Don't make the mistake I did! Use StableSpeed! It has not crashed yet after a month of heavy use. In that same time Presto has crashed / froze on an almost daily basis. Avoid this app, it is trash. |
[2013-08-10] A Google User: Development Not Kept Up BeyondPod now has a built in speech compression feature, making Presto! redundant with that app. After nearly two years, it's still listed as Beta and has some glitches. Good capability but needs to get the rough edges smoothed out and needs to be made compatible with more apps playing recorded audio. |
[2013-07-17] A Google User: Buggy! Get Pocket Podcasts. It has speed control built in. |
[2013-07-16] A Google User: Constanly crashing It keeps giving me a validation error, even though I bought this months ago. I contracted the developer, but I never heard back |
[2013-07-05] A Google User: Very buggy, crashes Doggcatcher Using Presto with Doggcatcher introduces unresponsive controls, fails to start podcasts, and randomly opens settings menu instead of Doggcatcher. None of these problems exist with Doggcatcher alone or with a different variable speed audio library. |
[2013-06-27] A Google User: Must have for podcasts Can't listen to podcasts without this mod Now. It helps speed along listening so much |
[2013-06-23] A Google User: Can be buggy Sometimes of late it causes my audio to play at about 1 word per minute reinstall fixes it. it is the only app I know of doing this sort of thing so I put up the bugs. Permissions make perfect sense if you think about it |
[2013-06-20] A Google User: Sometimes glitches stereo bluetooth unnecessary permissions |
[2013-06-18] A Google User: Expensive for something unreliable Only 25% of my podcasts will play at speed (Samsung GSIII & Dogcatcher), at 50p I wouldn't mind but it's a fair bit more than that. |
[2013-06-14] A Google User: Blech Recent release has been corrupting end of files with s3 and doggcatcher loved it until now. |
[2013-06-13] A Google User: Doesn't work with Nexus 4 and DoggCatcher |
[2013-06-11] A Google User: Works excellent on audio podcasts It's not perfect, a few bugs but it works great. Occasionally people sound like chipmunks but only if the audio was already fast. I'm surprised at how much the voices DON'T change when you speed it up. I listen to a talk show on beyondpod. |
[2013-06-10] A Google User: Zero odzewu z pomocy. Działało, ale po jakimś czasie okazało się, że powoduje zatrzymanie listy w BeyondPod... |
[2013-06-09] A Google User: Works well Thank you for fixing the issue that showed this was incompatible with N7! I wouldn't have the time to listen to all of my podcasts without this app. It sometimes causes my podcast player to crash, but that's a minor issue. |
[2013-06-04] A Google User: Hangs badly Was great on my s3, when I upgraded to an s4 this cause total system hangs that required a battery pull to restore responsiveness. I have moved to a different solution. |
[2013-05-16] A Google User: Freezes BeyondPod Bought this App so that I can use it on BeyondPod podcasting app, ends up slowing and freezing the app so I had to uninstall. |
[2013-05-15] A Google User: crashes doggcatchet This crashes when playing podcasts at 1.5x on my galaxy player 4.0. |
[2013-05-07] A Google User: Good when it works It randomly goes silent and comes back. Never happens with plug in disabled |
[2013-05-07] A Google User: Get PocketCasts with Integrated Variable Speed! I previously used Presto with BeyondPod. It worked well most of the time, but often was buggy and would cause the player to crash and I'd have to restart to get it playing again when skipping through podcast commercials. Now I use PocketCasts which has integrated variable speed. No Presto necessary. It wasn't until I used the PocketCasts variable speed that I realized how poor Presto is. On PocketCasts you can listen as a faster speed and skip ahead through podcasts with absolutely no lag like I'd always get with Presto on BeyondPod. |
[2013-04-14] A Google User: abandoned? Constantly locks up while playing audio in apps like DoggCatcher, requiring Presto to be force-closed. No response from Presto developer. |
[2013-04-13] A Google User: Abandonware The dev has abandoned his other project and now it looks like this one is too. Look at Stable Speed, Pocket Casts or the BeyondPod beta instead. |
[2013-04-07] A Google User: Presto sucks Try "stable speed" its much better without the crap DRM. |
[2013-04-03] A Google User: Insanely useful, but buggy |
[2013-04-03] A Google User: Works sometimes, but crashes more than I'd like I've been using this for about 6 months now. It does speed up my podcasts, but it also makes the app crash many times a day. Unfortunately, I have not found a replacement that works with my older phone. |
[2013-04-02] A Google User: Lots of crashes Listening to podcasts at higher speed is great, but this plug in is a mess. I have been using it for a long time because there was no alternative. Now that pocket casts has this feature built in, I'm glad to ditch this piece of buggy ****. This app has been in beta for years now and the developer does not care as there have been no updates since the time I first installed it. |
[2013-03-28] A Google User: Don't buy They stopped supporting |
[2013-03-27] A Google User: Works great for me I'm using this with BeyondPod on a Samsung Galaxy S2 with rooted stock firmware. All works fine for me. No problems or glitches. |
[2013-03-25] A Google User: Awesome but buggy. Works great when it works. Seeing same issues as other people where it bugs out on playback start sometimes. Force closing or rebooting phone works to fix but annoying as it happens almost half the time when phone has been not used for a few hours. Still this is the only solution I've found for 2x playback. |
[2013-03-19] A Google User: Ugly crashes When used with BeyondPod, I often hear two audio streams a few seconds apart (fixed by force close of Presto), or see files fail top launch. It's worth it, but these problems are still fairly common. |
[2013-03-15] A Google User: now junk i used this with Dogg Catcher for years, now crashes it seems like every 4 hours, emailed developer? needs a update badly! |
[2013-03-14] A Google User: 2nd app on every new device Right after beyondpod i install this. Saves so much time podcasting when listening at 2x or more and is still quite natural and understandable..listening to podcasts without they sound slow and weird i have gotten so used to this |
[2013-03-14] A Google User: Didn't work on One X before, but it's working now . |
[2013-03-11] A Google User: Love it! Been using for over a year and still love it but I have noticed that it distorts 1X paying speed mostly making it obviously slower than normal speed. |
[2013-03-04] A Google User: Excellent Improves my podcast listening. Great sound quality. |
[2013-03-04] A Google User: Waste of money Doesn't playback all podcasts at 2x. Didn't figure that out until I paid Says podcast can only be played af 1x. |
[2013-03-03] A Google User: Does what it says at a cost Great sound quality but makes normally stable apps very very buggy and causes force kill and heavy lag in certain situations |
[2013-02-27] A Google User: Nonstop crashes. No fixes. Developer is AWOL! This app crashes after every podcast no matter what podcasting app you use it with. Also, it completely locks up if a call comes in during play. It is terrible and the developer refuses to fix it. If there was ever an example of an app for which Google should force the developer to give refunds to all buyers, this is it. EDIT: Never worked right. No updates for the better part of a year. No responses to email. This developer sucks. Do NOT give him your money. EDIT2: If you want variable speed playback, buy Pocket Casts. The 4.0 version of Pocket Casts has an all new Holo-themed interface and buit-in variable speed playback capability. Presto NOT needed. |
[2013-02-25] A Google User: Works great Didn't think this was what I wanted but I'm cranking out some podcast listening now on beyondpod. Listening to normal speed feels like slomo. |
[2013-02-20] A Google User: Only game in town. Wish this was a bit more stable. But it works usually and sounds great when it does, much better than variable speed on my iPhone. |
[2013-02-17] A Google User: Crashes Often As far as I know it's the only game in town for variable speed playback. I use it with Doggcatcher and while it's great when it works, it crashes fairly often. Last update was May. Hopefully another app will hit the scene or the dev of Presto can finish the work. |
[2013-02-17] A Google User: Seems a lot more unstable on jelly bean! Would be better if they could fix the huge battery use. It looks like development is done though. I don't want to uninstall, but I could really increase my battery life... |
[2013-02-17] A Google User: Drains battery 423% faster!! ...even at 1x playback speed. No updates in forever. Do NOT buy if you use on battery power...or until they fix (doubtful). DEVELOPMENT HAS STOPPED, they haven't stopped taking money for the app, BUT DEVELOPMENT HAS STOPPED. |
[2013-02-15] A Google User: Indispensable, but buggy Frequently crashes podcasters. If there were any competition, I'd switch away in a heartbeat. |
[2013-02-12] A Google User: crashes daily but only game in town Very frustrating to use, crashes daily with beyondpod and Pocket Casts with Bluetooth, usually with a FC on the player. To fix, sometimes app restart fixes it, sometimes reboot phone, sometimes remove/reinstall presto, sometimes stuck playing at 1x without presto. But, since this is the only wayto speed up podcasts, I deal with it. |
[2013-02-11] A Google User: Still hangs It's been too long on the market to still crash as much as it does. |
[2013-02-10] A Google User: Only one of its kind but buggy I wish there were more apps that did variable speed playback, but presto is it. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and presto crashes on me at least once a day on my nexus 4 using doggcatcher. Still, the 2x speed is too important to pass up. |
[2013-02-04] A Google User: Good This works well enough as it is, like others I have noticed skipping here and there at 2x and higher. Personally I find 1.5x a little too fast .. I would really like a 1.25 option |
[2013-01-30] A Google User: Do NOT buy, not stable, no replies from developer Garbage....very unstable!! Seemed like a good option to use with Doggcatcher, as I listen to a lot of podcast. Caused constant freeze-ups and studdering. Contacted developer for ideas or a refund, no replies. Don't expect any support. Update 10/9/12: After multiple attempts to contact developer, I've uninstalled the app. Waste of money! Continued to get lock ups and studdering. I haven't found another way to adjust playback speed, but honestly, listening at 1x speed is much better than dealing with this app. Several attempts to contact developer have gone unanswered. |
[2013-01-25] A Google User: Works well but has but beware your battery WILL suffer! Compatible with dogg catcher. Works well... Wish Dev could improve the battery drain issues |
[2013-01-21] A Google User: Does what it's supposed to do I got it as an add-on to Doggcatcher, and it works nicely and unobtrusively with good sound quality for sped-up podcasts. |
[2013-01-19] A Google User: Works flawlessly but... Fantastic on my GS3 but incoming calls cause app to crash |
[2013-01-12] A Google User: Good on SGS1, works very well on SGS3 too This works very well on SGS GT-I9000 and SGS 3 GT-I9300 with Beyondpod, when using greater than 1x play back speed. |
[2013-01-07] A Google User: Works great on modern phones I had a problem with this on my original HTC Incredible. In the end I think I got it working with root and a different kernel. At any rate, I haven't had any problems since I upgrade to a more modern phone (SG3) with adequate horsepower. I use it as a plugin for BeyondPod and it does a fantastic job at fast playback! |
[2013-01-02] A Google User: Used with Pocket Casts No problems with my HTC Rezound. |
[2012-12-31] A Google User: Buggy, but still worth it. As others have mentioned, there's a bug where Pocket Casts will force close if playback is interrupted by an incoming phone call, & Presto will continue to play, requiring you to manually kill Presto via the Android settings. Pocket Casts will also force close at the end of a podcast if it's using Presto and you've also checked the option to automatically delete an episode when it ends. Still worth it, IMHO. |
[2012-12-17] A Google User: Thank you! I'm so happy i found you! Now i can hear these pod casts way faster! It does mess up after every phone call with pocket casts and I have to force close presto to get pocket casts to work again... But still worth it. |
[2012-12-15] A Google User: Works well on my Samsung S3 and DoggCatcher I have been using this with my S3 and Doggcatcher for a couple months now. It works very well and allows me to listen to podcasts at 1.5x. Every once in a while Doggcatcher might lock up for a bit when switching songs. Doesn't happen often and I am not sure if it Doggcatcher issue or Presto or what. Certainly was well worth the $5 to be able to listen to podcast at 1.5x. Lets me listen to a few more podcasts every week and to get through them all. |
[2012-12-13] A Google User: Causes BeyondPod to Freeze Nice idea for an app. When it works it does it's job of speeding up podcasts however when not using the app it made BeyondPod freeze and force a restart of the podcast. Rather annoying. |
[2012-12-13] A Google User: nope very first episode I tried said only available at normal speed. wtf. immediately refunded |
[2012-12-12] A Google User: Crashes app that use it. Worst app I ever bought. Has issues even long after it was released. |
[2012-12-10] A Google User: Super sucks now |
[2012-12-05] A Google User: Works where others failed I'm running a non stock cyanogen modded phone. I had tried a few other audio book speed changers that weren't compatible. Was afraid to try it, didn't want to spend the money and have it not work, but not an issue works great. |
[2012-12-05] A Google User: So close I have used Presto with both Pocket Casts and Doggcatcher and the variable speed playback works well most times. My main problem with it is that it causes instability resulting in lockups in both apps after a while. Once it becomes consistently stable it will deserve 5 stars for sure. |
[2012-12-03] A Google User: glad this feature exists I switched from iOS about 4 months ago to android... one of the things I missed most was being able to adjust playback speed of the recordings. I'm not thrilled about needing to pay $4.99 for a feature that was built in/free in iOS as well as needing to pay for a player that actually uses presto as a plugin. Anyway - that was sort of a rant against lack of built in software to android and not really Presto. My only complaints against presto are the price (which I feel is too high) as well as a very poor integration with my original choice in podcast clients (PocketCasts). Pocketcasts crashed CONSTANTLY when integrated with Presto (plugging/unplugging headphones, at end of episodes, when recieving a call, trying to multitask with email or the browser). I've recently switched to BeyondPod and that app seems to be 100% stable while integrated with Presto. |
[2012-12-01] A Google User: Overall A Great App This isn't a fancy app, but that is because it isn't supposed to be. It simply works, which is all I ask of it. |
[2012-11-26] A Google User: Would love to give this a higher rating I've been using this app as a great time saver for MONTHS, and would give it a high rating if it weren't for the aforementioned (in the last two comments) bug! If you're on the latest version of Android (Jellybean) and you get a phone call while listening to anything at a Presto-changed speed, the audio app you're listening to will force close upon ending your call! Previous poster had a good tip to force-close Presto after the call is over so you don't have to reboot, but the developer should fix the app so this isn't needed. I've contacted the dev via email but no response yet. Hope it gets fixed soon as Presto is a must-have for any serious podcast listener. |
[2012-11-23] A Google User: Crashes my SGS2 Nothing but trouble. Frequent phone lock ups, beyondpod skips and stops or won't seek... the list goes on |
[2012-11-20] A Google User: Works smothly I love the Audible ability to change the speed. On my 2011 Galaxy Nexus with BeyondPod hitting the button to change the speed works so flawlessly that I didn't notice it quickly, but not instantly, ramped up the speed without any distortion. There is a small delay before the speed change takes place. It lowers the pitch so they don't sound like squeaky chipmunks. And was dead simple to use. |
[2012-11-18] A Google User: Works Great! I use this integrated with BeyondPod. Everything works great and no issues at all. The sound quality is great as well, no problems with the CPU when outputting 2x audio. Great work. |
[2012-11-08] A Google User: Very buggy Makes Pocket Casts slow and sometimes unusable. The price is too high for beta software. |
[2012-11-05] A Google User: Good, needs some improvement The commenter before me mentioned the audio look that happens during a phone call. I don't agree with his conclusion though. The fix by the way is to force-close this app, not Pocket Casts because this is what's processing the audio. Anyways, I think the developer needs to add in something to look at the phone state in order to hand over the audio gracefully. I am not however an experienced developer nor have I seen his code so I may be way off. This app has saved me hours of listening; I love it! |
[2012-11-01] A Google User: Bluetooth unusable Is there an alternative that doesn't die with Bluetooth? |
[2012-10-31] A Google User: Cannot use Cannot accept ULA w explore by touch. Lost my $5 |
[2012-10-30] A Google User: Unusable and buggy |
[2012-10-28] A Google User: Excellent sound quality Excellent app when used with BeyondPod. I listen to all my podcasts at double speed, and have no problem understanding any speech that was recorded at a good quality. |
[2012-10-20] A Google User: Buggy, but works I use Presto with Doggcatcher often. I've noticed that my phone crashes much more when using Presto to play podcasts, and the license validation error happens often. |
[2012-10-17] A Google User: No good over bluetooth. Works fine with headphones, however habitually crashes the podcast managers I have tried (doggcatcher, beyondpod) when confronted with bluetooth. Sometimes makes my podcast play twice at the same time... Out of sync! |
[2012-10-17] A Google User: Expensive but mostly works Like everyone said, works but makes playback a little more flaky. Using with beyond pod. Frustrating to have to pay so much for buggy software. But then again don't have a choice. |
[2012-10-16] A Google User: Arrogant The description for this app annoys me- uhh ah I only spend few hours on some mondays, be patient, blah blah- rather than moaning stop charging for it. |
[2012-10-10] A Google User: Great for podcasts Fine increments of speed adjustment is great for speeding up podcasts just enough while still being able to understand what they're saying. Pitch stays the same and audio remains clear. |
[2012-10-08] A Google User: Must have for podcasts! I use double speed all of the time with podcasts. Works very well, excellent audio quality. |
[2012-10-06] A Google User: Works perfectly. |
[2012-10-04] A Google User: Revision of my previous review... I installed this library for use with PocketCasts and had no real issues. There was the occasional hiccup but generally it worked quite well until I moved my podcasts from the SD card to the phone. The library would continuously fail and was completely unusable. Once I moved my libraries back to the SD card it seems to work fine. Not sure if this is a problem with Presto or with PocketCasts but I'm content to leave my podcasts on the phone in order to have variable speed playback. |
[2012-09-30] A Google User: Love it This program always performs. Both on an HTC tablet and on my galaxy s2. |
[2012-09-27] A Google User: Good time saver I cannot still believe it's possible to hear audio at speed 1.8x as a real speech |
[2012-09-25] A Google User: Fail on s3 Worked great on s2. But on s3 speech becomes garbled and unlistenable. At the price of this app, that is untenable. |
[2012-09-23] A Google User: Cool, but expensive Just don't think it is worth 5 bucks. |
[2012-09-22] A Google User: Useful, works perfectly, expensive This app is expensive, and it's unfortunate that apps don't integrate this functionality themselves, but it works well. |
[2012-09-18] A Google User: Perfect. Working great with beyondpod on Verizon galaxy nexus with custom jelly bean Rom. Docked one star for selling a "beta" product for more than most other non-beta apps. |
[2012-09-06] A Google User: Unusable w/ Doggcatcher and LG O2X Enabling presto makes the application very slow. |
[2012-09-06] A Google User: Great when it works, which isn't very often I'm running Pocket Casts with Presto on a GalaxyS3. Often when I press play I get no audio, a long delay (20secs or more) and the then time counter screams along at 10x speed or more (still no audio). Typically at this point any other interactions with Pocket Casts will lock up the app completely, requiring the process to be killed and memory cleared. This won't always fix it, nor does a reboot. Only by switching off the Presto option in the Pocket Casts settings can I get any playback to work. When Presto does decide to work, it will often fail when reaching the end of a podcast and not automatically start the next. Any calls, txts or other notifications will likely break it. The complete lack of any reliable multispeed podcast player on Android is the only thing that makes me wish I still had my old iPhone 3G. One day some other developer will write a stable multispeed playback library, and all will be good in my world again. Until then, may I suggest attempting percussive maintenance? |
[2012-09-05] A Google User: Does what it says |
[2012-09-05] A Google User: Not worth it After installing, BeyondPod is less responsive. Now, even when I'm playing at normal speed I have to wait a couple seconds in between 30 sec skips. That's in addition to weird "double playing" of a podcast in two different points in timeline. |
[2012-08-23] A Google User: Totally worth it! It has made Pocket Casts a bit crashy, but the time savings makes it totally worth it. |
[2012-08-21] A Google User: Unusable I've been using this in combination with pocket casts in my car over bluetooth and initially it worked fine. Then I received a phone call, after the call was finished, presto continued to play the podcast and I couldn't stop it. I killed pocket casts but no joy. I ended up having to turn the phone off and on again. This happened a couple of times before I uninstalled Presto. I'm running stock ICS on a Galaxy Nexus. This is Google's flagship phone, so while this is a beta app, it should have been tested on this device. I've contacted the developer but had no reply. I'm all for beta software too, but not at this price. Waste of money. |
[2012-08-19] A Google User: Great but does cause minimal reliability issues. |
[2012-08-08] A Google User: Sloan31 It's works very well, but it can crashes at times too. It's in need of some fine tuning to remove a few bugs. |
[2012-07-23] A Google User: Licence issues!! Just tryed using this app in a WiFi tablet while on holiday and got licence error because it couldn't connect to net. Love the app hate the constant nags for licence checks - why not just once a month instead per day - sort it out please for WiFi only tabs. |
[2012-07-22] A Google User: Great timesaver Works flawlessly with PocketCasts on my HTC Rezound. If you enjoy TWIT Network....buy this app. |
[2012-07-20] A Google User: Speed up your audio Love it with the podcasts. Saves a lot of time. Also works on samsung pocket s5300, but used titanium backup to install; because it doesn`t show in the store... |
