1930年東京生まれ。1954年東京大学医学部卒業。55年同大学病院神経科入局。60年同大学大学院生物系研究科博士課程卒業、医学博士。

1960年より2年間、パリ大学に留学、外人助手の学位を得る。東大病院助手、医局長を経て、1966年より虎ノ門病院勤務。精神科部長。

1990年より大蔵省（現財務省）診療所所長。現在、財務省診療所カウンセラーを務める。数多くの霞ヶ関官僚の心の内側を診察し、官僚たちの心のケアにも積極的に取り組む。

作家川端康成の主治医も勤め、著書に「 川端康成　- 精神医学者による作品分析 」（中央公論社）がある。

最近では、企業におけるメンタルヘルスの現状を明らかにし、どのようにリスクを最小にしていくか、その実践的指針を述べた「職場のメンタルヘルス」（メディカルレビュー社）など著書多数。
