The gang has been stealing bullion shipments coming out of a local gold mine operated by the evil stepfather of Johnny's gal. A bizarre, almost horrific twist in the plotline has the bandits using wandering drifters lost in the desert for slave labor. A wonderful, atmospheric horror film. A beautiful lady finds herself completely terrified inside her hubby's crumbling castle. There's a monster afoot! It seems the ghost of a medieval torture maniac, "The Punisher," is on the loose and killing off people in a variety of grisly ways. The "rat-eating-the-girls-face" scene is a real eye-opening shocker. Turn your head when the Punisher is unmasked; this is one of the scarier makeup jobs we've seen in a while. Two desert thugs plot against an old miner and his daughter. The sexual overtones are beyond anything usually seen in old-time westerns. Kent has a very seductive skinny-dipping scene that lures Von Eltz and Hardy. The topper comes when Von Eltz lustfully approaches her as she lies in bed at night. The eye contact and facial expressions are unforgettable. Kent's beauty creates a lustful electricity that exudes the same magnetic sexual innocence and loveliness that Marion Marsh had in Svengali. In a subtle way, this may be the most erotic B western ever. Yet, there is lots of action, including some great chases. It's unnerving to see Hardy, one of the top comics of all time, playing a dastardly SOB. Near the end of WWII some Anglo dames in China are caught up in a web of intrigue, sadism, sex, torture, and even implied lesbianism. Some rogue Nazis have a death ray more powerful than an A-bomb! They intend to sell it to Japanese agents for use against the United States. The Nazis, who still have an officers' club operating in Shanghai, offer up the Anglo dames as "entertainment" for the Japanese secret service. Don't let the "crime-film" sounding title fool you, this is a terrific, atmospheric, wonderfully made old dark house chiller. Eight unsuspecting people all seek refuge in a creepy old inn, not knowing a mad killer is amongst them. The killer begins to bump them off, one by one. Shudders!
