Scholarley (Beta) (v. 0.9.8.17 B) Разработано Matthew Wardrop |
Scholarley is an unofficial Android client for Mendeley; which is a free and convenient application for managing your library of academic papers (see: http://www.mendeley.com/). Scholarley has been designed for both Android phones and tablets.
If you find a bug in Scholarley, or want to request a new feature, feel free to submit a ticket at http://bugs.matthewwardrop.info; or contact me directly. However, please keep in mind that I am a full time PhD student, and Scholarley is written in my spare time; originally just for myself. Overly critical reviews and impatience are not at all motivating.
<b>Current Features</b>
Scholarley's current features:
- Authentication with Mendeley using OAuth.
- Viewing of document details in a refined format.
- Opening documents and attachments of any format provided that your Android device supports them. An external PDF viewer is required for viewing PDFs.
- A convenient user interface which supports filtering documents by:
- (sub-)folder
- group
- author (with smart deduplication)
- tags
- And support for sorting documents by title, author, citation key, date of addition to library, and date of last modification.
- Full offline synchronisation of your Mendeley library (including, at your option, PDFs and attachments).
- Local changes to document tags are persistent through synchronisations, but cannot yet be uploaded to Mendeley.
<b>Upcoming Features</b>
Features currently under development include:
- Full persistent local modifications to document metadata.
- Undo support for local changes made to the library.
- Detection of PDF modifications (such as the addition of annotations).
- Refinement of the user interface.
<b>Other planned features for 1.0.0</b>
Scholarley's upcoming and proposed features for 1.0.0 include:
- Local changes to folders (adding, deleting, and moving documents into and out of them); with the ability to synchronise those changes to Mendeley.
- Full two-way synchronisation of document metadata.
- PDF upload to Mendeley support.
<b>Roadmap</b>
Features are added to Scholarley as and when the developer feels motivated to do so. Tweaks to the user interface will occur throughout the development. As a general guide, however, the development of Scholarley will follow the roadmap below.
- 0.9.8.x releases will be focussed on extending the abilities to locally modify your library; with some upload capabilities.
- 0.9.9.x releases will be focussed on extending support for pushing local changes to Mendeley.
- 1.0.0 RC x releases will be focussed on bugfixing and (potentially) translations, if people are interested in having Scholarley available in their native tongue.
- 1.0.0 will mark the first official stable release of Scholarley.
<b>Subsidisation</b>
Scholarley was originally intended for my private use only. Since then, at the request of many people, various features have been added. In order to sponsor future development, it is necessary that I find monetary remuneration. Consequently, an in-app upgrade will be required to unlock all upload and social functionality. This can be purchased in advance for a reduced price of AUD$3. As these features are implemented, the price will be increased. Viewing of your library, and local modifications to it, will always remain free.
<b>Note concerning Mendeley Open API:</b>
Scholarley is limited by the API offered by Mendeley. Recently, their Open API has been significantly improved; and Scholarley has yet to take advantage of all of the new features. I commend Mendeley for the helpful correspondence I have had with them regarding new features to the API; and their readiness to assist. I look forward to the future of Mendeley.
If Scholarley does not satisfy your needs, please consider alternative Android clients for Mendeley such as Droideley and Referey.

[2012-11-15] willtim: syncing bugs fixed It now works pretty well, despite the erratic sync progress bar that can't make up its mind |
[2012-10-25] arijit: now has become a quite stable and usable app very recent updates were so nice! an in built pdf reader with annotation would be great. the effort from the developer is very much appreciated! |
[2012-10-25] David: Android Transformer Infinity Works great for reading my PDFs! Can't wait to see it develop even further |
[2012-10-25] Ruta: Good for reading PDFs That is the feature I needed most. Instead I get an error: "The document cannot be opened because it is not a valid PDF document." Any suggestions will be appreciated. Edit: now I can open pdf's so added one more star. However, annotation feature would improve my rating even more. It would be very nice to be able to add comments/highlight text while reading on tablet. |
[2012-10-24] Matthew (吴文浩): Slow / No Sync @Paul: Can you email me? |
[2012-10-18] Yohannes: Mr Perfect! Couldn't ask for more. |
[2012-10-18] Paul: Latest version, stable but no sync Latest update seems stable, so great, and the 'experience' is always getting better! However, in the latest update, sync seems to hang permanently: scholarley is still usable (even if slightly slower), but after leaving on for nearly 24 hours, the sync is apparently still underway... Am happy to provide more info if told what is required. |
[2012-10-16] Andrew Ong: Most Excellent Support! |
[2012-10-16] Andy: Best mendeley app out there |
[2012-10-16] adamsky: Awesome Just what I was looking for after moving from the iPad. Super fast support!! Adam |
[2012-10-15] seal20: Very useful Do all that is needed to use mendeley on a phone: check a reference, read a pdf, etc. Easy to use. |
[2012-10-14] Zach: Best around Works well overall. Matthew (the developer) has been very kind and responsive to feedback, despite having to juggle development with his graduate work. |
[2012-10-03] Jeff: Nice app but... Nice app but it doesn't seem to show groups that are shared with me. That would be a very useful feature for those who maintain collaborative databases. |
[2012-10-03] Trouble: Brillant Great stuff, thanks to all the hard work it can do a lot of things that are extremely useful when on the move. Whish tagging was possible to be "synchronised". |
[2012-10-03] CSU Grad: Great start, good functionality for beta Nicely done. May I suggest the following as potential additions: 1. Ability to set fonts used in GUI. 2. A download all PDF function. 3. Offer you app to Mendeley as their Android option to get them caring about our community. |
[2012-09-28] SINODY: Strange Just installed, logged in, synchronised and now i see some articles in my library that i have never added there. If it is a bug with accessing my account, is my privacy protected? |
[2012-09-28] Shahzad: Use full app Great app but still needs some more features like syncing the PDF changes and notes to main database . But still its good enough. |
[2012-09-28] Karhu: Really nice + small bug Looks really great so far. However I have one annoying problem/bug: Every entry in the paper listing is marked with a "MISSING CITATION KEY" info. Could you please fix that? |
[2012-09-24] rshams: Good Like the fact that It is tablet optimized ! |
[2012-09-22] pdblouin: Best Mendeley App Pre-ordered the paid version. Depending on how well you pull it off, I will donate extra. I understand you're limited by the Mendeley API, but we'll see what happens. Great work so far. |
[2012-09-22] klinedd: Great. Does what it says I gave this a try because Mendeley has forgotten us. I am able to read my PDF's that are posted on Mendeley. The developer has recently added many new features, including better sort and search. Galaxy Tab 10.1. The developer its very responsive to issues. Update: 9-21-12 paid for premium features based on positive experiences with developer and app. |
[2012-09-22] djupp: Many thanks for making this So far the app does all I want, and it is updated often. Encouraging signs that will probably get me to donate money soon! Thanks for taking time out of your day to make mendeley better for Android users. |
[2012-09-21] Yuanjie: synchronization work only once Though having a nice interface, it's not useful as it cannot get synchronized since its first launch. |
[2012-09-21] Imil: Very good Recent updates made the app much better, thanks. |
[2012-09-19] Chris: Major improvement Fantastic app for those who want Mendeley on android. Thanks! |
[2012-09-18] Robert: PDFs not working PDFs are not opening once downloaded through app. Can open them fine if I open through dropbox. Please fix this and I will update review. Currently very unhappy with this app. |
[2012-09-18] Ras: Brilliant...except This is by far the best Mendeley app out there and I really have gotten good use out of it. HOWEVER after the last update non of the pdfs will open. I'm sure this will be fixed soon and the app will be back to its former glory. |
[2012-09-16] James: Top marks Works great on android tablet, highly recommended |
[2012-09-15] ZhouQin: Cannot sort by date added! Perfect software except cannot sort documents by the date added. Usually I found papers online and drag them into mendeley, then I synchronize them on my tablet using this software so I can read the papers when on the go. It would be really convenient to find the newly added papers. Thanks! |
[2012-09-14] magma: Very nice Best Mendeley client for Android already, author is very responsive to requests :-) |
[2012-09-14] Thomas: Wrong UI The UI should be tablet on Nexus 7 and other 7' tablets, not phone. |
[2012-09-14] Eric: Cannot open downloaded pdf PDF downloaded from the app won't open with adobe reader. Please fix! Thanks for the hard work |
[2012-09-12] Gabriel: Amazing Thank you so much for making this! Coupled with ezpdf it makes reading articles on my nexus 7 so nice. Like many have said I would be more than willing to pay for this app for pdf annotation sync. Mind you, even "as is" it goes a long way to removing the need to print out articles for me. Thanks for doing this! |
[2012-09-03] ala: Downloading of fultexts of articles I would like to use the Scholarley for reading of scientific articles, but I cannot read fulltexts of downloaded articles using Scholarley, which I can read in Mendeley desktop (sure that in M.desktop the articles can be read because they are stored in PC but i expected that if they are once downloaded, they are available from anywhere). However, with Scholarley I can read only the informations which are a part of citation format (title, authors, keywords etc., but not any attached file. cordially ales kucera |
[2012-08-27] Collin: was working perfectly. WAS I had an older version that I hadn't updated in a while, but when I clicked the Full Sync in the past, it would download all the PDFs no problem. Now when I click it, the sync screen starts up and doesn't download anything. I let it go all night and the sync screen stayed on the whole time, but no PDFs were downloaded. Please have this fixed as I like Scholarley's sorting system over any of the other Mendeley clients. Thanks |
[2012-08-17] Peter: Good start Needs search and sorting according to time of adding the given manuscrupts. |
[2012-08-13] Daniel: Jelly bean update pleeease Thanks for the great work - please keep it up! Unfortunately, I don't get the tablet interface on my nexus 7 - please update for jelly bean. A quick way to remove the current tag filter, notes integration, and an option to sort by date added would also be nice. |
[2012-08-09] iluetkeb: no oauth It doesn't support OAuth. Granted, my Mendeley Login/Password are not super-critical, but I still don't want to have to give external apps passwords for web services when a perfectly good alternative exists. |
[2012-08-09] Brennan: Fantastic! Everything I want besides highlighting starred articles! Thanks to developer! |
[2012-08-09] Peter: Need Nexus 7 Support Please add tablet support for nexus 7. Also a trigger menu for removing "missing citation key" would be great. |
[2012-08-02] Rob: PDF sync broken Without reliable PDF sync, this app is useless. Uninstalled. I found Droideley to be much better despite the lower play store rating. |
[2012-08-01] Joel: Eagerly awaiting Version 1.0.0 Dear Matthew, you have done a great service to tens of thousands of users. The app is beautifully designed and highly functional. However, the possibility to annotate (with ezpdf) on my tablet abs sync back to Mendeley is of critical importance to me, so please make your announcement true that this functionality becomes available! I'm sure others, like me, wouldn't mind paying a token for that. |
[2012-07-26] Lochana: Why phone UI on nexus 7 I was wondering why this app defaults to phone UI on my nexus 7 Please fix this. |
[2012-07-24] Murray: Jelly Bean Error I'm having a problem where my login credentials seem to have expired. It only happens on my Nexus 7 and not my Asus Transformer, so it may have something to do with lack of Jelly Bean support. Other than that, the app is amazing. A couple of suggestions I have are inclusion of a search function and fixing of the tags button, which only appears at the top on certain occasions. Optimisation for 7 inch tablets would also be nice. I would gladly pay money for a more polished version. |
[2012-07-24] fipm: No tablet layout on Nexus 7 Best app for Mendeley on Android so far, however I would very much like it to have a more android 4.X 'native' look in terms of widgets and layout. More importantly I have just tested it on my Nexus 7 and the app does not go into tablet layout. |
[2012-07-18] Larry Matt: a grad student's best friend When Mendeley updated their free storage to 1 gb I found myself thinking, "Well, hey, now my whole PDF library will fit on there." So I uploaded it. I just got a Nexus 7 and wanted a way to store my PDFs and read them. This app syncs to Mendeley and gets all my citations and then there is a button I can press to download the PDF and read it. Thus, one of my primary productivity challenges for using a tablet has already been solved. Sweet. Users have noted many improvements that could keep the author busy. This app is definitely worth money. My own suggestions so far are: 1) allow user to download all PDFs, or download all PDFs in a folder, rather than one by one 2) increase search capabilities |
[2012-07-18] Andrzej Pronobis: Great app, but download does not work There seems to be a problem with file downlading. I receive a message "We do not have permission to make this file available for download. Public group document." even though the files does not belong to ANY group. Seems to be a bug that prevents me from downloading any PDFs. |
[2012-07-04] gimutsh: Great but crashes Good job. Nice layout and smooth login. Syncs perfectly. Load pdf reader nicely. However, it crashes on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 running Android 3.2 |
[2012-07-03] Naomi: Doesn't work for Galaxy 8.9 Would love to use this app as I've heard great things about it, but it crashes and/or doesn't sync on the Tab 8.9. If they do an update that does, I'll try again. |
[2012-07-01] Hao: Great app. Would be happy to pay for it if .. It can upload the modified pdf. I currently use it on my phone but will have a 7 inch tablet soon. It syncs with my database well and downloads pdfs. The only thing missing is upload the modified pdf. The worst part in the current version is that the name of the downloaded pdf is not preserved. So I can't even manually sync the pdfs from the phone to my computer based on file name. |
[2012-07-01] ping: Excellent The best Mendeley interface available on Android. Sorely needs sort by date and annotation support however :-) |
[2012-06-20] movingturtle: Really nice Gets the job done insofar as organising the citations etc goes. Great to be able to download the .pdfs too. Woul be brilliant to be able to download .pdfs to a different folder (e.g. on an sd card) to keep space free on my device. |
[2012-06-11] Bolster: So close! This app may have to be referenced in my acknowledgements in my thesis; it's been great to keep me working on the move, but there's a few small things that would make me a very happy man; the simplest being: Sort By Date Added. I usually end up with a whole pile of papers to snog, marry, or avoid, a list of 'papers added in the last week' would make that process a lot easier. Also, Please pretty please integrate notes! :D Annotations etc would be nice to add, but most of what I do is tag based anyway. Thanks! And keep up the awesome work! |
[2012-06-08] Ted: Excellent at its current functionality My ENTIRE Mendely library syncs w/o an issue and it allows me to tag and organize on the fly from my phone! |
[2012-05-28] Carlos: Awesome It is a very good app but it does require some improvement to sync the annotations that I make on my tablet to the Mendeley server. Then it will be the best app ever. |
[2012-05-16] Craig: Excellent App. Great for working on the go In scholarly, all of my articles say "Missing Citation Key." How do I remedy this/what does it mean? Definitely telling all of my associates to use this application. |
[2012-05-15] AC: good app This Is exactly what I've been looking for. One thing that I can't figure out is how to get the notes/highlights I put on the PDFs to synchronize back to Mendeley on my pc. I've been using ezPDF. Is this a Scholarley problem or do I need to find a different PDF reader. Please help. One other little bug is the little green or red tag showing the available PDF disapears some times and i have to restart the app. Otherwise this is a great app and I would recommend it to anyone who reads a lot of papers! |
[2012-05-10] Amin: Perfect Spending time for 2 days trying different apps, I found this one much better than others, but still not complete. Could be more practical if you consider synching back from Android to Web (tags as least). This is smoother than Qiqqa, both the desktop and android version. Go on with the good job :) |
[2012-05-08] dcharles: Very good |
[2012-04-28] kevin: Great! It's the best unofficial Mendeley app, but could have more functionality, like read status. Overall, I love it! |
[2012-04-23] MELPOMENE: great app hopefully annotation syncing will be available in the near future. a million thanks to the developer(s)! |
[2012-04-23] Junjie: awesome too bad mendeley has no official client for android. but this app is quite professional that it's like official! |
[2012-04-17] Christian: Exelent!! Hi again, The app is already perfect. But i think there is a missing feature for full Mendeley integration. People can edit PDFs with the updated Adobe Reader or another app and you can detect if a PDF was modified in order to update it on Mendeley. Thanks! Old review: Christian on April 16, 2012 (Version 0.9.7.13 Beta) Don't know if it was coincidence or good support. I wrote a review saying that it was not working on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 3 days later: bang!! an update and is now working. Thanks!! 5 starts for you man!! My old review: | Christian on April 12, 2012 (Version 0.9.7.11 Beta) | can't log in in galaxy tab 10.1 | Hi, have you tested in a galaxy tab 10.1? I'm trying to use but it's not working. I can't get logged in. :( |
[2012-04-16] Aaron: Bravo! A superb effort. The Dev should be applauded. Even in its beta-state this application is stable and solid and fills a massive void in the android marketplace. A superb academic tool! |
[2012-04-16] Ali: Great Mendeley client for android Best reference client for android |
[2012-04-16] Mohsen: Awesome |
[2012-04-15] Rahul: Fantastic Very handy during presentations and discussions with colleagues, keep it up! |
[2012-04-15] Mohammad: Great work Keep going ,love it |
[2012-04-06] Chris: Almost... Great effort, still beta. Should allow definition of documents directory; mine live on my phone with a portable install of Mendeley. Now, I have 2x. |
[2012-04-02] Isabel: Does exactly what I needed 4 & 1/2 * Really good app, lets you connect and download your mendeley library so you can study articles on the go. Sets them out in your folders and shows you individual docs, easy to navigate. You do need a PDF reader external to the app and an inbuilt one would give it a 5* rating but it's east enough to use aldiko or adobe to access your files. Not normally a review writer but felt this deserved it as is very useful and easy to use and setup. |
[2012-04-01] Vance: 5 stars for app and for commitment to improvements. Would pay because of this. Transformer. |
[2012-03-24] Jon: I'd like the option to pay for this app to support development. |
[2012-03-20] Gustavo: Fantastic! I would gladly pay to support the developement of this app. |
[2012-03-13] Ludde: Great and improving Great app, keeps getting better at a fast pace and has all the features I miss in the roadmap and proposed features! I'd be willing to pay for the app or make a donation to maintain this development rate. |
[2012-03-12] Bassam: Does not work Never stops trying to sync... |
[2012-03-05] Arun: Great App After the most recent update, this app works wonderfully on my motorola atrix! Very useful. |
[2012-03-05] jkyprian: App is getting better. Can login and sync now without error messages and crashes. However, sync is way too slow!!! |
[2012-03-03] Vinnie: Fantastic First time I've ever rated an app but this made me. Great piece of work and exactly what I was looking for |
[2012-03-01] magnusp: Great work Frequent updates, works as it should and roadmap looks amazing. Let's hope Mendeley keep making it easier for these kind of open projects. |
[2012-02-28] aarkay: Awesome |
[2012-02-28] plutopants: Coming on - thanks to a dedicated developer This is really improving each time. I love Mendeley and being able to just view my referenced pdfs on my tablet is great. I am a research student and find this invaluable. Along the way there have been some glitches but I always knew they would be addressed by the next release. Five stars due to the dedication of the Developer. Thanks. |
[2012-02-19] Chuong: Great, thanks! |
[2012-02-13] Angeliuska: Works perfect!! I can read all my files on mendeley, sort by autor, or not sorted... I waited for and app like this. Mendeley works like itunes for papers, and you can use with word to create the references, and with this you can check them everywhere. |
[2012-02-10] Sebastian: Incredible update rate! And the app is incredibly good in itself... One thing lacking is the ability to sync back documents. I take it that'd be possible with the current Mendeley API... |
[2012-02-08] damaru: Functional Works. But improvement in usability like clickable URIs etc. Are needed. |
[2012-02-01] Tom: works for me so far i can log in and sync and download pdf to read great tool to help my reserch will keep track on the update |
[2012-01-30] patrickceg: Pretty good for a beta Even with the (known) bugs, it still can do the job of giving me access to my papers on my tablet without having to transfer them through USB or other online services. It seems to share the bug with Droidely that it chokes if I attempt to download all my PDFs attachments (~100MB). Keep up the good work! |
[2012-01-27] Rasputin: Stopped working Mine worked initially on my GT-19100M and worked really well but then out just stopped working I hope this gets worked out soon because when its working it does things beautifully. |
[2012-01-19] GG: Just what I've been looking for. I'm going to buy an android tablet now. If the beta works this well I can't wait to see updates. This is going to change my world! |
[2011-12-28] Ondřej: Works great! The other mendeley apps don't work, so I tried this and it does exactly what I want. Thanks! |
[2011-12-22] Adeel: Nicely done For a beta release, this is quite good... cant wait to see the final version. |
[2011-11-16] Ali: Not as good as the pc version I was dreaming this app for my asus eeepad transformer (honeycomb) and also for my HTC desire HD(android 2.3.1), unfortunately, it has no way to go with neither of them. It does not usually schronise with data which I have in my mendeley web account. Even if it does once you are lucky enough, It does not open the files inside the app. So, it is way behind the pc version of mendeley and terribly needs to be developed, then and only then as a daily user and customer of pc version of mendeley, I would be satisfied with the service of the company. |
[2011-11-02] Glenn: Good Excellent, works well on my htc evo. |
[2011-10-16] stef: Great for research This app works great on honeycomb. Occasionally it will fc when I first open it, but it's never fc'd twice in a row. Paired with a good PDF reader (ezpdf). Hoping for support of tags and stars soon. |
[2011-10-04] Kevin: almost there still a few minor bugs but generally works great. nearly at the same level as the iphone application |
[2011-10-03] FoW: Can't be start. Please check your internet connection. |
[2011-10-03] damipa: Cannot login at all |
[2011-10-01] bingo: Bo Very simple and fast |
[2011-09-21] Jared: Search? Please, please please give me a way to search my library! Such a critical feature. If it's there it's impossible to find (Honeycomb 3.1). On the plus side, the app is pretty stable for me. |
[2011-09-16] govi: Badly needed app.... although crashes quite a bit |
