The gerund or 'ing' form of the verb is very useful in English because it conveys a mental picture. By saying the 'ing' word you transmit an image to the listener - usually a doing-word.
For example, if you say 'eat' this is a command and not polite, but if you say 'eating' then you convey a simple picture of someone who is eating. It can be past, present or future.
