The Three Musketeers (French: Les Trois Mousquetaires) is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, first serialized in March–July 1844. Set in the 17th century, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, inseparable friends who live by the motto "all for one, one for all" ("tous pour un, un pour tous").

The story of d'Artagnan is continued in Twenty Years After and The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later. Those three novels by Dumas are together known as the d'Artagnan Romances.

Les Trois Mousquetaires est un roman d'Auguste Maquet et Alexandre Dumas, initialement publié en feuilleton dans le journal Le Siècle de mars à juillet 1844. Il a été édité en volume dès 1844 aux éditions Baudry et réédité en 1846 chez J. B. Fellens et L. P. Dufour avec des illustrations de Vivant Beaucé.

Le roman raconte les aventures d'un Gascon désargenté de 18 ans, d'Artagnan, monté à Paris faire carrière afin de devenir mousquetaire. Il se lie d'amitié avec Athos, Porthos et Aramis, mousquetaires du roi Louis XIII. Ces quatre hommes vont s'opposer au premier ministre, le cardinal de Richelieu et à ses agents, dont le comte de Rochefort et la belle et mystérieuse Milady de Winter, pour sauver l'honneur de la reine de France Anne d'Autriche.

Avec ses nombreux combats et ses rebondissements romanesques, Les Trois mousquetaires est l'exemple type du roman de cape et d'épée et le succès du roman a été tel que Dumas l'a adapté lui-même au théâtre, et a repris les quatre héros dans deux autres romans Vingt ans après, (1845) et Le Vicomte de Bragelonne (1847-1850) pour former la trilogie des mousquetaires.

Madame Bovary (1856) is Gustave Flaubert's first published novel and is considered his masterpiece. The story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Though the basic plot is rather simple, even archetypal, the novel's true art lies in its details and hidden patterns. Flaubert was notoriously a perfectionist about his writing and claimed always to be searching for le mot juste ("the right word").

In 1815 Edmond Dantès, a young and successful merchant sailor recently granted his own command by his dying captain Leclère, returns to Marseille to marry his fiancée Mercédès. Leclère, a supporter of the exiled Napoléon I, has charged Dantès to deliver two objects: a package to Maréchal Bertrand (exiled with Napoleon Bonaparte on Elba), and a letter from Elba to an unknown man in Paris. On the eve of his wedding to Mercédès, Fernand (Mercédès' cousin and a rival for her affections) and Danglars (who is jealous of Dantes' rapid rise to captain) send an anonymous note accusing Dantès of being a Bonapartist traitor. Villefort, the deputy crown prosecutor in Marseille, normally a just man, destroys the letter from Elba because it is addressed to his father who is a Bonapartist and he fears that it will harm his career. In order to silence Dantès, he condemns him without trial to life imprisonment.

Après quatorze années, d'abord passées dans la solitude et le désespoir puis régénéré et instruit par un compagnon de captivité, l'abbé Faria, il réussit enfin à s’échapper et prend possession d'un trésor légué par l'abbé sur l’île de Monte-Cristo. Riche et puissant et devenu le comte de Monte-Cristo, il entreprend de se venger de ceux qui l’ont accusé et précipité dans l'abîme.

Les Fleurs du mal (English: The Flowers of Evil) is a volume of French poetry by Charles Baudelaire. First published in 1857 (see 1857 in poetry), it was important in the symbolist and modernist movements. The subject matter of these poems deals with themes relating to decadence and eroticism.
