Идея создания этого произведения возникла у Эмиля Брагинского и Эльдара Рязанова после того, как им рассказали историю о человеке, который, попарившись в бане, зашел к приятелям, где усердно и активно повеселился, после чего чистый и довольный заснул. У не совсем трезвых друзей возникла гениальная идея погрузить своего незадачливого товарища в поезд, следующий в Ленинград. Когда ничего не понимающий друг проснулся в поезде, прибывшем в город на Неве, то обнаружил, что кроме веника, портфеля и пятнадцати копеек в кармане у него ничего нет. Брагинский и Рязанов стали фантазировать, как могли бы в дальнейшем развиваться события этой практически детективной истории, получилась веселая и лиричная пьеса.
