초등학교 6학년 때.

나에게는 짝사랑 하던 동급생 소녀가 있었다.

졸업하기 전까지 단지 훔쳐보기만 했지만, 이래서는 안되겠다 싶어서 졸업 직전, 그녀에게 고백을 하기로 결심을 했다.

설레는 마음은 정성껏 편지를 쓰면서 가라앉히고, 들뜬 마음은 선물을 고르며 안정시켰다.

두근대는 마음을 어떻게든 진정시키며 하루하루를 기대 속에 기다려왔다.

그리고 고백하려던 당일 날.

내 마음은, 단지 말 몇 마디에 처참하게 무너졌다.

"야, 곽민우 걔 있잖아, 너한테 고백한다던데?"

"엥? 걔가 왜?"

"몰라, 너한테 마음 있나봐. 어떡할거야?"

"뭘 어떡해. 난 걔 별로 마음에 안 드는데. 그냥 선물만 받고 편지는 버리지 뭐. 뭣하면 편지 너네들한테 돌릴까?"

"오옷, 정말? 남자얘들 편지 어떻게 쓰나 궁금했는데 보여줘!"

그 대화를 들은 나는 몇날 몇일을 고민해서 쓴 편지를 갈기갈기 찢어 성냥으로 직접 불태워버렸고, 몇 달을 기다려 모은 용돈으로 산 선물도 짓밟아서 형체도 안 남게 만든 뒤 쓰레기통에 버렸다.
