The Castle of Otranto

First published pseudonymously in 1764, The Castle of Otranto purported to be a translation of an Italian story of the time of the crusades. In it Walpole attempted, as he declared in the Preface to the Second Edition, "to blend the two kinds of romance: the ancient and the modern." Crammed with invention, entertainment, terror, and pathos, the novel was an immediate success and Walpole's own favorite among his numerous works. The novel is reprinted here from a text of 1798, the last that Walpole himself prepared for the press.

Horace Walpole, 1717–1797

Miscellaneous writer, third son of Sir Robert W., the great minister of George II., was born in London, and ed. at Eton and Cambridge, after which he travelled on the Continent with Gray, the poet (q.v.). His father bestowed several lucrative appointments upon him, and he sat in Parliament for various places, but never took any prominent part in public business. By the death of his nephew, the 3rd Earl, he became in 1791 4th Earl of Orford. In 1747 he purchased the villa of Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, the conversion of which into a small Gothic Castle and the collection of the works of art and curios with which it was decorated was the main interest of his subsequent life. His position in society gave him access to the best information on all contemporary subjects of interest, and he was as successful in collecting gossip as curios. He also erected a private press, from which various important works, including Gray’s Bard, as well as his own writings, were issued. Among the latter are Letter from Xo Ho to his Friend Lien Chi at Pekin [1757], The Castle of Otranto, the forerunner of the romances of terror of Mrs. Radcliffe and “Monk” Lewis, The Mysterious Mother (1768), a tragedy of considerable power, Catalogue of Royal and Noble Authors, Anecdotes of Painting, Catalogue of Engravers (1763), Essay on Modern Gardening, Memoirs of the Last Ten Years of George II., Memoirs of the Reign of George III., and above all his Letters, 2700 in number, vivacious, interesting, and often brilliant. About the Author
Jules Verne, 1828-1905

French author who helped pioneer the science-fiction genre. He is best known for his novels Journey to the Center of the Earth (written in 1864), From the Earth to the Moon [1865], Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1869-1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873). Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before navigable aircraft and practical submarines were invented, and before any means of space travel had been devised. Consequently he is often referred to as the "Father of science fiction", along with H. G. Wells. Verne is the second most translated author of all time, only behind Agatha Christie

About the Author
Ivan Turgenev, 1818-1883

Russian novelist and playwright. His novel Fathers and Sons is regarded as one of the major works of 19th-century fiction.

Turgenev first made his name with A Sportsman's Sketches (??????? ????????), also known as Sketches from a Hunter's Album or Notes of a Hunter, a collection of short stories, based on his observations of peasant life and nature. Turgenev himself considered the book to be his most important contribution to Russian literature; and Tolstoy, among others, agreed wholeheartedly, adding that Turgenev's evocations of nature in these stories were unsurpassed.

Fathers and Sons ("???? ? ????"), Turgenev's most famous and enduring novel, appeared in 1862. Its leading character, Bazarov, was in turns heralded and reviled as either a glorification or a parody of the 'new men' of the 1860s. Many radical critics at the time did not take Fathers and Sons seriously; and, after the relative critical failure of his masterpiece, Turgenev was disillusioned and started to write less.

Arcus Dictionary Pro (ADs) is a fast English dictionary with 185000+ words, definitions and synonyms available offline.

There are two pro versions, one paid and one supported by ADS. This is the AD supported version.

The pro versions have extra features compared to the basic free version: search web dictionaries, voice search, random word widget, 10,000+ more definitions and sample sentences where available.

It is designed to be easy to use and give you the top and most common results for your query.  All you need to do is start typing to get results instantly.  By default the more probable matches are displayed first although there is an option to display results purely alphabetically too.

The dictionary also supports pronunciations for definitions, a favourites feature, word hyperlinking, sharing and  customisation options.

This is one of a series of Birding Checklist applications for Android mobile phones and tablets.  There are applications for Australia, New Zealand, United States (excluding Mexico and South America), Western Palearctic (UK and Europe), Norfolk and Lord Howe Island, and Ecuador/Peru/Bolivia.

*** PHOTOS & SOUNDS *** These are downloaded separately, and must be manually installed via your PC.  Please check the Readme file at this download website so you know how to do this. The photos and sounds are NOT included in the download package from the Android market.  It is recommended that you test the download and install process with the demo version first, then upgrade to the full version when you have confirmed that it is working.

c. Maintaining your Lifelist

Full versions have the following features:
- complete listing of all bird species and subspecies (where known)
- searching and filtering of the bird list
- statistics and record of your personal bird Lifelist
- current tick list (birds you have seen today or during a short field trip)
- quick lists for customised bird listings for locations your frequently visit
- display of bird photos and bird calls on the SD card linked to the application (these must be manually downloaded separately)
- logging facilities including GPS location (if your phone has a GPS)
- export log file in eBird Import format for rapid loading of your sightings to eBird
- optional downloadable Rangemaps and extended text descriptions (incomplete but growing collection on external download site)
