Dear Samsung Galaxy user
Your device was delivered with the OS Android 2.1. This version of the OS contains some small bugs which among others also affect the ChessBase Online App.
Solution:
- Upgrade the OS to version 2.2 or 2.3
- Delete the file „greatgames.pgn“ from the folder „ChessBase“ on your smart card. The ChessBase App will automatically create the file at program start again.

[2012-10-02] Finn: Real good but major usability flaw. Would've been 5 stars but I can only open this app using the Google play open button. Will not open by pressing app icon. I'm on Android 4.0 with a HTC incredible. |
[2012-09-29] Manuel: Good when it works The first day I installed it ran great. Super fast with neat features. Problem is, it won't open now unless I shut my phone off and then back on!! I shouldn't have to go through this every time I want to use the app!! Ridiculous. Does anyone else have this problem?? ; |
[2012-09-26] İlker: Fantastic!! Finally we have got chessbase and playchess applications. I downloaded both. And i can say only one word to describe how i feel. Amazing! Playchess allows you to watch live chess tourneys and play live games, which works properly. Chessbase allows you to reach huge database moreover, opening theory (2012). If you are chess addicted like me or professional chess player you will love. |
[2012-09-20] ganglion: Easy and fast Quiet good.... Easy to search new update made it better |
[2012-09-03] Jeroen: Faster is just not possible An accurate and up to date database in your pocket. My favorite option is the free text search. |
[2012-08-21] Joseph: Full screen. Great app. Add a full screen board option and I'll give it five stars. |
[2012-08-21] Asim: No where close to chess base desktop version Does not remember the last pgn open end. does not remember my side of board when I turned the board and came back. Online search sometimes goes forever. Pressing back on board sometimes goes to search window and them suddenly shuts the app. |
[2012-08-14] spiralni: Sgs2 The one and only of its kind. |
[2012-08-11] Marek: Does not open even if paid. Paid for the program and it refused to open claiming my license was invalid. Am applying for a refund. It is unacceptable to have such a bad bug in a commercial product. |
[2012-08-10] Kanakkr: Kanai Mitra Simply excellent |
[2012-08-05] Azam: Save to sd Please allow user to save the database |
[2012-08-04] Tom: Very good Need android ui for five stars. |
[2012-08-04] Anonymous: Great Product If your a true chess this app is a must have. |
[2012-08-03] Zoë: Great job Could be better designed but this is the best chess opening learn software in an app period. Search historic game too and a lot more. Keep tweeking it to make it perfect. I'm really happy that Chessbase has an app. Love this app. Wish you could play live games though. |
[2012-08-02] Epee: Brilliant with small flaws - at least on N7 Stunning in what it can deliver even to a very ordinary chess player like myself. All those books with lengthy variations and analyses suddenly make sense - because the vast ChessBase database finds almost all games (quickly and easily) and you can play through including adding multi-branching variations and comments if you like. As a bonus the app includes "Great Games" data file 500 commented games covering master level chess from the 1850s to 2000s. These games can be accessed even offline ! Awesome support from dev to iron out hiccups on N7. Bear in mind as other reviewers point out this app does not play chess against you. It is designed to allow you to access and play through games stored either locally on the device or from the enormous (and constantly updating) ChessBase archive. If you want to play through all of Fischer - Spassky or explore the delights of the classical or hypermodern eras or keep up to date with latest super-GM tournaments this app is simply brilliant. |
[2012-07-27] Rayzor BigDog: Nimzokarla Simply wonderful. Hours of fun. |
[2012-07-25] Salous: Feature needed Need to watch live broadcasts for GMs tournaments |
[2012-07-23] nickname: needs position evaluation After this app I deleted quite a few chess apps. A versitile app that has a database with commentaries by the professional players similar to the megadatabase only much smaller. Want to know why Leko played certain moves against Anand check out this app for a move by move explanation. This app will set up pieces for you to do a positional study. The functionality is excellent on my 3.2 android Thrive What it lacks unlike say pocket Fritz or Fritz is an analysis engine stated who is ahead in a position. It also will not play a game of chess against you. Check out the shredder app. Games can be transferred from your chessbase files to this app. Finally chessbase has updated this app frequently since purchasing showing strong support. For the price an excellent buy. |
[2012-07-19] Alexander: Useful chess study tool. This app gives you access to a big online database of games. It lets you search through that database for players and/or positions. If you want to discover the opening repertoire of a particular player, this app will do all the work for you. Equally, if you just want to access a particular game and play through it, it's fairly easy using this app. The options are not as intuitive as they could be, but once you become familiar with them it is a fairly easy program to use. It does crash/hang occasionally, which isn't ideal, and there's no built in analysis engine, which is a shame. Despite these shortcomings, it's quite good. If you want to study the games of other players, using an Android device, then this is the app for you. If you want to play chess against your Android device, get 'Chess Genius' or 'Shredder'. |
[2012-07-17] Aksel: Very good support Wonderful... Good support service. |
[2012-07-16] Mariachi: Brilliant! Absolutely love it..! Very practical and easy to use. Best app for android ever. |
[2012-07-14] Quinn: Good Better browse capability would be nice. |
[2012-07-14] Saumil: Nice app but requires key feature Requires features such as showing multiple options in a box for different variations in a game...this will enable players to study opening variations with ease by clicking on any of the variation that appears in the box instead of looking for the variation in the notation....pls include this feature!!..and it will be the best app for a chess player! |
[2012-06-29] NIK AHMAD FAROUQI: NO ENGINE TO ANALYSE POSITION? If i can put my engine here it would be 5 stars! |
[2012-06-27] Ray: Excellent database I really enjoy using this database and for the price, can't be beat. Others wanting to use an engine, can export the pgn and open with SCID or Stockfish which can be downloaded for free. |
[2012-06-24] Jerry: Horrible chess app! This app destroyed my SD card! Lost all my pics and vids and to top off the game explorer doesn't even show what opening it is! Don't you think it should! |
[2012-06-15] Manu: Needs an Engine! |
[2012-06-11] Will: Needs built-in engine Please add strong engine for analysis. |
[2012-06-09] sna19: Formats cbh, cbv, cbz, ctg are not supported Since the most supported formats of the desktop application are not available here, the application becomes limited and unusable. Formats such cbh, cbv, cbz, ctg are mostly used by publishers. Please include in future versions. |
[2012-06-09] kirill57: Missing One thing this application is missing - ability to analyze with chess engine! |
[2012-06-09] TheRealDiffy: Chess Engine Please add support for Chess Engine! Ofherwise a great piece of software. |
[2012-06-05] the 6/5/2012 : Brilliant. Unlike some users never had a single issue with using this app. Absolutely brilliant |
[2012-06-01] tilly: Nice .... when it works ..... The app is very nice, but it relies on a connection online. Worked fine first couple of days, now it sits hanging trying to connect to Chessbase! You would expect this for a freebie, not for an app you have paid for. Hopefully, these are minor teething issues, but disappointed so far that it does not work all the time! Hence my poor rating! |
[2012-05-28] Diego: The all-seeing eye of chess! |
[2012-05-21] Salim: Buggy n Sloooow Great when it works... But mostly hangs on loading games from the online server! |
[2012-05-18] ash: Needs online connection and The moves have to be manually progressed. If You are used to studying chess with chess master on computer this is disappointing. In short, for tablet world this is over priced. |
[2012-05-12] Csaba: Pretty app with some lacks. It has almost everything but why can't it open cbv files? I bought some dvd's from chessbase and ebooks from everyman, too bad I can't take them with me. So I'm slightly disappointed but otherwise this is quite a useful and pretty app. All chess players should have it. Well, the ones with android devices at any rate :) |
[2012-05-12] JOSE LUIS: Excellent Excellent chess database. Don't except more. |
[2012-05-11] aw: Excellent Chess App While the chess board is minuscule on my LG Optimus V, this app performs very well. Great features and an excellent resource to sharpen one's skill. |
[2012-05-08] Eva: better than nothing if you need chessbase on contemporary hardware ..about the only way to access chessbase without having to fire up a windows® antique.. a very reluctant and somewhat marrow-minded recognition of 21st century usage shift. better than nothing. and won't work offline |
[2012-04-29] Cloudcroft: Buggy Blew up 4 times in 1 hr. |
[2012-04-18] stavros: Good A very good database.I am waiting a feature to play against cpu |
[2012-03-30] Mark: The Chess App I've been waiting for... better than the Iphone/Itouch version! A dream to use on my Iconia tablet! Truly a pleasure to study chess games with!! :-) Gets better with every update! Now has tap..tap move and move to SD card...Thanks Chessbase!! When will pocket fritz for android be available?? Version 2 with pgn game saves and annotation is a welcome addition! Thank you!...also like the tap tap input..also when will engine analaysis be available?!? |
[2012-03-18] Miguel: It simply doesn't work Every time I try to play a game it comes back to the main screen. It's frustrating. |
[2012-03-14] jl: Problem solved After several attempts managed to update again and now works brilliantly! |
[2012-03-14] Julio: Works good. Need to make it compatible w . C11 Need to make it compatible with Chessbase 9.. and newer file formats. |
[2012-03-13] Cheng-Hwee: Failed to highlight the current move on SE Xperia Arc. |
[2012-03-10] Tommy: Disappointed (edit - now delighted)! I have CB9 on my PC so was expecting good things from this app but as has been said elsewhere it is very limited for a paid for app. Its inability to read CB's native standard file .cbh is inexcusable. This means you have to duplicate your databases into .pgn and subsequently keep both up to date. I cannot find how to search by position on my saved databases therefore I assume its not available either. The playback board is clumsily designed making playing through games awkward as the buttons are often mis-hit. I will persevere in the hope that these niggles are ironed out but if I was wiser I would have spent my £3.49 on a pint of Guinness & experimented with the free apps available. Edit - Wow!! The March update is a game changer. I'm increasing my rating to 4 stars due to the increased ease of using it as a database. Saving games & positions has improved drastically. Now worth the money. Some quibbles remain eg not .cbh compatible & some other improvements can be made but am now confident Chessbase will get to these. Well done!! |
[2012-03-09] vipiu: Why every update is called Minor fixes? To be fixed Missing features Please add: some engine to analyze the position, some way to get the moves Player X played in all his games in that position(like as black he played against 1e4 32times 1...c5 12 times 1...e6, etc),statistics for his results-to find out that he scores only 25% against 1c4. The issue with exiting is fixed. |
[2012-03-05] the 3/8/2012 : Buggie Cant open downloaded pgn files. Dont waste your money, waittill they fix this dog |
[2012-03-01] Gmashmith: Thank you Very easy to navigate and operate |
[2012-02-28] Thommy Tirso: Application I cannot open the application?! |
[2012-02-25] Kalonji: Works Does everything as advertised |
[2012-02-15] Abraham: Online Database This application has still a long, long way to go. I will make it simple for you. Purchase it only if you think that access to the ChessBase game database is worth that money (I do), because that is what it is. I rated this 2 stars, not because it has no AI to play against or engine to analyse but because of the poor user experience for my mobile phone. First, the board is too small and it is hard to move the pieces and second the buttons to advance to the next move are also too small so you end up clicking the button close, which turns the board the other way around. Quite annoying sometimes as you can understand. If you want to play against AI or analyse position, simply go for free options like "Droidfish" or "Mobialia Chess (Ads)". |
[2012-02-13] Chespupil: Longggggggg way to go! This app is particularly useful to,check opening lines. Errr... That's about it! Move input is very annoying, you can't use tap & tap, you have to drag around all the pieces. Can't create .pgn files with different variations (or it's too difficult), can't work with other pgn files properly. No analysis engine. No .cbh compatibility, no Fen code twitter export, can't save your work... If you still have a pocket PC, pocket Fritz is like... 5 times better. Enough said! |
[2012-02-03] Mark: Managed to get it run by a simple firmware upgrade. Seems like a useful app. |
[2012-02-01] John: very impressed I've had Chessbase for several days now, and it is exactly what I was looking for. In addition to coming with a set of games in a pgn file, it offers access to online games on their web site as well. This morning as I started on the chess puzzle in the paper, I noticed the puzzle came from a game played last year. When I searched for it, I found the full game available on the chessbase site. Replaying 1000's of games with full annotation is a great way to learn chess. Chessbase was able to access another set of annotated games I'd independently downloaded. They also offer an "opening search" which I puzzled over for a bit. I finally realized that by selecting a series of moves, Chessbase looks for games that start with these moves, and you can select one from the corresponding list of games. This was one case where a little "help" might have been in order - there is none - and that would be the only criticism I have. However, the interface works well enough to have allowed me to figure that out on my own. A little help on how to save a game would be good too. Nevertheless, a good tool. |
[2012-01-20] Jeroen: Good Does what it advertises and does it good. This is a database not an engine. Nice work |
[2012-01-11] Bjarni Jens: Prepare for opppnent is crapp It's NOT easy to prepare for opponent. Bought this app only for that feature. One should be able to see a statistic tree for a single player (one tree for white ofc and one for black) just as one would do in the PC program. Even when I search my opponent's games they don't show up in time order, making it ever harder to see what he plays in his most recent games. |
[2012-01-10] Gede: No engine Best database but useless without CHESS ENGINE. Please update with engine, it will make 5 star |
[2012-01-10] Reiko: Reiko Good app, but it would be better if it comes with an engine. Please also include a feature to save filtered games into the SD. |
[2012-01-10] Marc: This app has great potential, but in its current form does not do anything. It hangs. |
[2012-01-08] Andrew: Ok serious chessplayers are audience. Price is right for access to uptodate cbonline database. New update not treating multivariations correctly.fix! |
[2012-01-07] Gilles: ok but needs improvement nice layout. database could be bigger. Other major improvements needed: allow Apps to SD, connection to chess engines, move by click instead of drag. 3 stars because I hope this will all be taken care of. |
[2012-01-03] Jabulani: Unhappy Good application, but I think it will be much better if it has the playchess online feature. After studying some moves we need to practice. Thank you. |
[2011-12-26] Alex: for paid apps, it lacks of feature such as autoplay, artificial intelligent to play,so user can alter the game |
[2011-12-22] Brian: V. 1.1 does not open. Running current version of android. |
[2011-12-20] yeellow: Not working on Android 2.3.6 It worked nice until I upgraded system from 2.2 to 2.3.6. Now it is not compatible with my phone anymore. I hope it will be fixed in the next upgrade... |
[2011-12-20] SubtleOne: Brilliant! Constantly evolving and scales from phone to tablet beautifully. |
[2011-12-20] ian: ChessBase Online ChessBase GmbH what a super App i have been waiting for this for ages as it been on apple for quite a bit and nows its arrived it superb easy to use with so many games on it even has the latest events on it very impressed with it and if your looking ofr a chess ap with a database look no further than this one. |
[2011-12-16] Mihai: Nice but seems to have a few annoying bugs Nice app but opening a game from history removes all the variations and annotations from the game. The same thing happens when trying to send a game by email. Can't search directly by ECO code. EDIT: The PGN issues have been fixed in the latest version, great. |
[2011-12-10] Thomas: Awesome Great app!!! Now it needs an engine ported to it and it would be perfect. |
[2011-12-03] bomtrown: This is amazing so far. I would like to just have plain green and white squares like a tournament chess board, but the wooden board is ok. |
[2011-11-30] atopos: Excellent addon to chess android apps Very good app. I love figurine notation and the ability to follow moves touching their pgn symbol, it makes easy to follow game variations and comments. I hope more features in future versions. A complete chessbase (.cbv file) reader would be a dream. Of course, access to a huge and updated database of games is in itself a great enhancement for android users |
