REVIEWS
(Reviews for iOS version)
"[I] know strong bg play when I see it. This app is the strongest iPhone bg app I've played with by far. It does not cheat period. ...Analyzing these matches with eXtreme Gammon confirms a world class level of play with normal luck factors. If you are losing, get over it. So would 99.9% of the other backgammon players in the world. It is just that good. Learn from it." -Richard Munitz, Giant of Backgammon, #21 world ranking in 2009
"Backgammon NJ plays at an extremely high level with an excellent interface, and I often use it to practice on my iPhone when I am traveling. I recommend it highly to my students and friends." -Phil Simborg, Professional Backgammon Teacher and Player, www.mindgamescenter.com
"I've played over 500 games now; I've checked about 5% of these against World Class Desktop programs (GNU, BGBlitz); and I've actually used some of the competition. NJ has the best interface and has more useful functions than any other backgammon apps out there."
"As someone who has played a lot online (FIBS, Gamesgrid, and others) and live, playing this app (on its hardest setting) is like playing a master player or like playing GNU."

IMPORTANT
Samsung Galaxy S2 and dual core phones have known hardware/OS problems that can cause apps to crash. These issues may be fixed when these phones receive the Android 4.x update in the coming months.

[2013-01-09] A Google User: Excellent interface and great support from the developer. The game was locking on my Galaxy S3 when offering or accepting a double. This was investigated and fixed by the developer in a very timely manner. Problem was related to GPU h/w acceleration being on on my device. The amount of doubles I see is unusually high. It's good that the game has manual dice so I can test the AI in the long run. |
[2013-01-06] A Google User: Hilly-g Great graphics and playability but seriously flawed computer play. Basically it cheats all the time. So frustrating ! |
[2013-01-06] A Google User: Simply the best. Well worth the price. Will help you improve. Best available by far. Anything else is a waste of time and money. Well worth the modest price for what you get. |
[2013-01-06] A Google User: Brilliant app It is unbelievable how many complete and utter morons comment saying this app cheats, even people who start off by saying they are experienced or good players- clowns. The Devs provide so much information that proves it does not, you can also look at dice statistics that in the long run will show that the comp gets no more doubles in a row etc than you do. Its disgraceful that there are so many cretins willing to tarnish the reputation of this app because they cannot take getting beaten? |
[2013-01-06] A Google User: BGNJ You wont need another backgammon ap. The stats are great. |
[2013-01-05] A Google User: Excellent app |
[2012-12-30] A Google User: Ok to learn with but the game Is B.S. An ok game to learn with but as any experienced player knows no player IN THE WORLD is lucky enough to always hit exactly the roll they need in every face off situation over and over again every single time without exception, which is just what this lame a** game does! So don't let the developers fool you with all their B.S. about analysis tools and blah, blah, blah... Let's be clear, even an idiot could see that this game definitely DOES CHEAT! Any dev who says otherwise, is full of it! |
[2012-12-29] A Google User: Totally rigged I've played thousands of ganes and quite honestly this app is rigged to cheat on the rolls. Miraculous rolls appear or a series of doubles show up unexpectedly. I consider myself an expert player and yet to have a winning percentage. Frustrating... |
[2012-12-29] A Google User: Cheats This is the less bad backgammon out there and I recommend it, but as you increase the app skill the only thing that changes is that its luck with the dices increases too. |
[2012-12-29] A Google User: Best Backgammon game I have played this brand on both android and ioS.This is by far the best backgammon game you can play. The AI is excellent and the Interface is perfect. |
[2012-12-25] A Google User: Best backgammon for Android |
[2012-12-21] A Google User: Top app I am rated 1950+ and love playing this app Extremely addictive and easy to play. Highly recommended |
[2012-12-20] A Google User: Cant beat the computer Seemingly perfect rolls vast majority of the time...always gets a hit on a single disc....sorry i spent the 10bucks...can get free game with same results! |
[2012-12-19] A Google User: dubious AI. how the processor can roll so many doubles in a row, is beyond my comprehension. that aside not a bad BG app, not a good one either. |
[2012-12-15] A Google User: The best! Without doubt the best Backgammon app available. And I've tried a lot of them. Just because it's good doesn't mean it cheats. If people want to be humbled at bg they should try gnubg! |
[2012-12-12] A Google User: Well designed Unlike some other backgammon programs this one does not appear to cheat even on expert mode. |
[2012-12-06] A Google User: Best I've played Well worth it |
[2012-12-03] A Google User: Best Best bg app |
[2012-11-30] A Google User: Yes like every other BG game. This one cheats and you can only do so much to win, if the Di force your moves with throws. It is still a good game but do not expect 100% fair play, I am winning about 60% so far, it wins by rigging the dice. Knowing this I still play it often, to bad it isn't a real challenge. Doubles are often a punishment for being taken and normally! the doubles thrown matches where the ai is blocking a return but every double thrown help the game stats for fair play even when it's cheating. |
[2012-11-29] A Google User: Fun - will help you improve - but frustrating Enjoying the app - I play and have played lot of backgammon ( to tournament level) and while I find the authors description convincing in many respects as to the "honesty" of the dice and when you do play a lot ( real life) you do see the most amazing dice - really there are too many coincidences of doubles at the right time or the right dice to hit etc - way beyond probability - so whilst good this fact rather spoils an otherwise good app - however I would recommend as represents a challenge |
[2012-11-28] A Google User: TOUGH opponent! Love it. I've been playing BGNJ nonstop for 8 months and still haven't outgrown it. |
[2012-11-27] A Google User: Wow, that is one good BG player At the risk of sounding like a shill, this is hands-down the best backgammon game I have found on any digital format. Takes the minimum amount of gestures to make the moves and is just so, so good at playing that I have learnt an awful lot through having my ar.se kicked again and again and again. |
[2012-11-24] A Google User: Nice enough I used to think there was a cheat code in here; the computer just seems to get too many key roles at key times. That said, I just backgammoned it for the 6 points. This is my favorite game app and I recommend it. |
[2012-11-23] A Google User: Cleverest AI out there..... If you want a challenge this is the best! |
[2012-11-14] A Google User: Best backgammon app on the market Challenging without cheating! if you think it cheats you can see all the rolls for the game before you start playing |
[2012-11-14] A Google User: Impressive It certainly doesn't cheat, it just plays very well. There is an option to enter your own dice rolls for those that can't believe they were beaten fairly. The program has a nice interface which is easy to use. If I could suggest some improvements then it would be: 1) have more levels - I'm a reasonable player (I've won a few of competitions) and I can beat it on hard but I nearly always loose on expert level (I guess I'm not an expert :( ). Unfortunately there are no levels between hard and expert. 2) better hints - equity scores per move are available but it could be much easier to access 4) online play - it would be nice to play other players on fibs etc. Overall I'm very pleased with the program. Money well spent. Mike |
[2012-11-13] A Google User: Victor Very competitive..not easy like the others |
[2012-11-13] A Google User: Very good game |
[2012-11-08] A Google User: Cheats Computer gives too many fives in expert |
[2012-11-05] A Google User: Best BG I've Tried Excellent AI BG. Get it |
[2012-11-04] A Google User: Cheats on rolls but teaches well A very sharp player, enhanced by either lucky rolling or knowing the next rolls. Nonetheless an excellent opponent, best feature is the hint function that will improve your game. Also love the gui, ease of use, speed, statistics, and other data made available. |
[2012-11-04] A Google User: Bogus reviews, rolls not random Really? A review from a "professional backgammon teacher"? And the guy claiming he wants a $200 game, but this is as good? Really? Dude. Buy better reviews next time. |
[2012-11-03] A Google User: Great backgammon Highly addictive can play for hours |
[2012-11-02] A Google User: It is a cheater!!! Is a cheater!! It cheat when generate the couples of dice. Standing it have best dice then you. You can not change to play with game dice. A crap game! |
[2012-11-02] A Google User: Definitely cheats... The game is good, relative to the other versions of backgammon that are available. But folks that say this thing doesn't cheat need to learn how to count. This game cleverly gives you double 5s and 6s at the end if games that you have no chance of winning. This way they can claim that you get the expected averages when in fact the game is still fixed. Pay attention in "Hard" and "Expert" mode and you will see that I am right. |
[2012-11-01] A Google User: Fantastic app |
[2012-10-31] A Google User: Brilliant The best backgammon game on android. Worth every penny. |
[2012-10-30] A Google User: Good but irritating Game is fast moving, and quite fun. Once it challenges you resign, it often rolls doubles for itself and small number for you. Should not be fixed in its favor. Still great game and better than anything else I have found out there |
[2012-10-28] A Google User: Good for beginners & intermediates Backgammon NJ offers more challenge than other backgammon apps I’ve tried from the Play Store. If you are a beginner or intermediate, and want to raise your game, BGNJ will help you do that. That said, I ultimately found it frustrating to play. If you are a highly skilled player, forget about the easy level. You’ll win every match. The medium level is a bit more challenging – but I still win about 85% of the matches. The hard level is a decent challenge. I win about 60% of the matches. The individual games I win here are usually quite close. The games I lose are frequently a different story – they are blowouts. The AI has a knack for getting just the roll it needs, the number of consecutive doubles it gets are flabbergasting, and most of my rolls just plain suck. At this level (and higher), BGNJ game play isn’t very realistic. Never have I encountered a live opponent with luck this consistent. Game play at the expert level is much the same, except the AI makes fewer mistakes. I win only about 25% of the matches at this level. FYI my ELO rating hovers around 1850 on FIBS. For me, BGNJ is good for a quick fix, but it’s no replacement for pc apps like GNU BG. |
[2012-10-28] A Google User: Best backgammon game for android This is probably the best backgammon game for android. It doesn't blatantly cheat except for rolling on from the bar. |
[2012-10-28] A Google User: Good app. Runs good on Samsung infuse. Good graphics. Good fast interface. Seems to get a lot of good rolls |
[2012-10-27] A Google User: Donald Jr NJ BACKGAMMON is a great teaching program. Love this game. |
[2012-10-26] A Google User: Great game I did not give it five stars because the computer gets 4 to 5 times as many doubles in its dice rolls. |
[2012-10-26] A Google User: Best I have found for Droid. I thought i was smart 'till I set it to expert. I wish I could say that I think it cheats but I'm afraid it just isn't so. This game is very habbit forming so plan to waste time if you buy. Kudos to the devs... this app is by far the best backgammon app I have seen for Droid. I highly recommended it to anyone. |
[2012-10-25] A Google User: Best Backgammon for Tablets This is the best backgammon aroubd for tablets. I've tried others, free and for money, but ths appears to have a better random dice roll and skill level options. You'll enjoy it as well! |
[2012-10-24] A Google User: Good game Good game, smart ai |
[2012-10-24] A Google User: Fair and Good Switched to this application having looked at reviews and analysis of playing level and random throwing. Very satisfied on both counts. Being able to see next 100 throws makes concerns about throws irrelevant. It just makes better use of its throws than I do at the expert level! Hints are a great way of improving your game. Good range of options, I am not bothered about lack of ability to change skin; it is the game play that counts. Well worth the money. |
[2012-10-24] A Google User: Challenging Very difficult on expert level, worth it! It's taught me a lot about calculated risk. |
[2012-10-24] A Google User: great love it! |
[2012-10-23] A Google User: The best backgammon app on Android, but there is one BIG minus: you cannot save your settings, and have to change all individual options each time you start the application anew, like skill level, checker colour, counterclockwise check movement, or double tap move. Frankly speaking, this is the first app when I face with the necessity to set all desirable settings anew. Another issue is that when app is opened it's not possible to long press home button to see the currently open apps you are using, the window instantly disappears. |
[2012-10-22] A Google User: Worthy opponent Plays very well. The tracking is great. |
[2012-10-21] A Google User: Very high quality app, worth every cent Great graphics implementation for tablet (Asus) with a great UI and lots of options. Good AI as well. Price is higher than average, but it's excellent value for money compared to others. Many apps never achieve this standard. |
[2012-10-20] A Google User: Backgammon NJ Great app! |
[2012-10-18] A Google User: Don't believe these guys! this game cheats to high heaven. I just played a round where I was wining and it so happened that it needed a one to stop my advance. well lo'n'behold it rolls itself 4 ones, blocks out my advance and then rolls a miraculous series of fur 5's and 6's to win the game. All that we don't cheat stuff is fluff and more than once have I been robbed because of the miraculous rolls it gives itself. UPDATE: the ones saying this is worth it are probably getting paid. There are too many 'coincidental' rolls by the program to call this great. and when you accept double points, it will go out of its way to ensure it wins that round, CHEAT! |
[2012-10-17] A Google User: Just can't take the cheating any more. A little too lucky. And for the last couple weeks its rolls have been just outrageous. Still a good game, just don't expect even rolls at higher levels. I really wish I could find an easy to use dice app that could sit in the system tray and spit out truly random numbers. |
[2012-10-16] A Google User: Ignore the 1's Ignore the comments from the one star raters that the game cheats and throws impossible rolls. If you are interested in raising your level of play, this game is going to help you move to the next level. Very very highly recommended for players at any skill level looking to improve. Excellent Update to V2.0 gives better stat layout. No question that this game can improve your play level. |
[2012-10-15] A Google User: Great app |
[2012-10-15] A Google User: Outrageously good Get it! |
[2012-10-15] A Google User: Backgammon nj If I could roll like this program does I would be a millionaire |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: So smooth!! This a great game - it works so well and runs quickly and efficiently. It is set up well even for seasoned players. Not sure the doubling cube works quite the way I expect. Brilliant!! |
[2012-10-11] A Google User: People that say the cpu favores rolls etc. This is bs. There is documented proof in the game.. there is no discussion about this issue. Best bg app.. |
[2012-10-11] A Google User: GREAT If you want to improve your game, buy this app. Also, disregard any review saying how this game cheats. They are just poor players who can't admit that their game is weak. |
[2012-10-11] A Google User: Not worth the price I wanted more realistic game play and truly random dice rolls so I took a gamble on this app. I do like the features it offers but the dice rolls are clearly not random, despite the developer's claims. Never did doubles appear on the first roll after many games. If the developer is "hiding" those dice rolls from us because it would mean rolling again, it is deceptive to not show the results of the algorithm that is supposedly generating random selections of numbers. Also there are very predictable patterns that emerge which cannot be the result of random dice rolls. If you play poorly, you actually have a better chance of winning. I would pay even more if the developer implemented truly random dice rolls and divorced the AI algorithm with the random dice roll algorithm. |
[2012-10-09] A Google User: Excellent backgammon, well worth the money I've been playing the AI Factory Backgammon game for a couple of years and beating the pants off it. I play GnuBg on my desktop and love it b/c it can play at a high level, and it provides hints to help me improve my game. Backgammon NJ plays at a similar level to GnuBg and has easy, med, hard and expert levels. This game gives no sign that it cheats with dice rolls. As Dashiel Hammett once wrote "The outcome of successful planning always looks like luck to saps." |
[2012-10-08] A Google User: Cool |
[2012-10-08] A Google User: Thanks. This is first class. |
[2012-10-06] A Google User: Indian Girl I think the computer cheats.... :-) |
[2012-09-26] A Google User: The best ever! I have had many backgammon apps and this one is just amazing. It's not predictable. Not a lot of repeat moves. I've never used a hint button before this app and it's taught me to be a better player. Get this one!!!! Just awesome. |
[2012-09-26] A Google User: Game intelligence is fixed Always seem to get bogus rolls when winning. Those same rolls do not seem to happen against the computer |
[2012-09-26] A Google User: I just uninstalled from my Nexus 7 after 2 frustrating weeks When playing against the computer in expert mode, the game tends to give itself very favorable rolls when required to gain an advantage. |
[2012-09-20] A Google User: Love this game Great graphics, good challenge...win about 75%, would love more challenging level. Does not roll all doubles when its behind like so many will do. Good job! |
[2012-09-19] A Google User: Great game I like the different settings, I can play as fast or slow as I like |
[2012-09-19] A Google User: Very strong player Of all the android backgammon apps I have tried so far, this one is by far the strongest. I was able to consistently beat the other apps, even on their hardest level but BGNJ is pretty tough on "Hard" -- I haven't even tried "Expert" yet. |
[2012-09-19] A Google User: Strong Would be nice to de able to import a text file with list of dice rolls. The built in generator produces rolls that are staggeringly in favour of the AI. |
[2012-09-15] A Google User: Don't trust the dice ! Good game play and graphics, however having played this app for a few months l find the CPU getting the dice rolling in its favour to pull off unbelievable wins !!!!!!! Try the manual dice option and make the CPU cry !!! |
[2012-09-15] A Google User: Great game This is a great backgammon game. I would have given it 5 stars but you can't drag and drop and computer rolls aren't automatic |
[2012-09-07] A Google User: A cheater 100% I'm sorry I paid. I'm no beginner and my dad is a league competitor. We have both played it and both judged it cheats. All the reviews and explanations the author has written are rubbish. The author claims its as good as GNU Backgammon but in his dreams (not available on Android sadly). If you don't believe me, buy it and prepare to be disappointed. |
[2012-09-06] A Google User: Thumbs down The free game is better in my opinion. |
[2012-09-04] A Google User: Best Backgammon. Strong play, great UI. By far the best Backgammon on Android. Great value, buy it, well worth the price. |
[2012-09-01] A Google User: Top notch! |
[2012-08-31] A Google User: Lopsided rolls I'm not a whiner and can take a beating but time after time it gets rolls that are just TOO right at just the right time.... I play for real at a fairly high level and this just isn't reality |
[2012-08-30] A Google User: For serious players I've checked BGNJ's play on gnu backgammon and at the expert level it's rated at 2000. Many useful features like rating your play and the ability to email game files. |
[2012-08-28] A Google User: Awesome Awesome |
[2012-08-27] A Google User: NOT FOR SERIOUS PLAYERS Playing serious BG for over 40 years, won--and lost-- my share of tournaments. Played this for a month now. CONCLUSION: the CPU certainly isn't random and clearly appears to cheat. Though its only $8, L'll dispute the charge on principle! If U want a challenging program that's actually creates random rolls, try GNU. Just Google gnu backgammon and try it, against the CPU. And, its free, but tough to use on a tablet or MD. |
[2012-08-27] A Google User: A little pricey I think 8 is too steep. Esp since this is a port of free software. That being said it is the only really strong bg game on mobile and it has great tutor features. I would like to see match analysis though like gnubg |
[2012-08-24] A Google User: Very good application It works like adream |
[2012-08-23] A Google User: Great app and good value I had already bought this for my iPad, but wanted it on my phone too. Would like to have choice of boards and online play - maybe the next upgrade? AI plays very well - extremely aggressive, as one critical reviewer noted. Teaching me not to fear taking outrageous risks when circumstances require it. Feels great when those moves pay off and who cares if they don't. The dice are not fixed, it's so easy to check. If they seem fixed to you, despite clear evidence to the contrary, then you have to adjust your own perceptions and you might become a better player as a result. Random dice constantly produce unexpected results, that's because they are random. Eg six doubles in a row is no less random than any other sequence of six throws, unless you are able to predict it. It's going to happen every 1,000 or so games, so several times a day across all players of this app, I imagine. Good thing about the skill stats is you can lose games, but still feel satisfied that you played skillfully. Works the other way too, of course. |
[2012-08-20] A Google User: Love it! Best backgammon for android by far! |
[2012-08-19] A Google User: Outstanding!!! If you like getting your a$$ kicked, this is the game for you. It's logic is absolutely ruthless. |
[2012-08-16] A Google User: Yup ! Excellent! Now only if we can have INTERNET play with other people ! |
[2012-08-15] A Google User: Highly recommend Strong play, excellent interface, enough options to let you choose the way YOU want it to work. Well worth the money. |
[2012-08-15] A Google User: Online Gammonplayer for15years The game is designed not necessairly for ramdom rolls but to penalize you for making moves it feels are not the best. You see this easily on the percentage of times it comes in on one roll when 4 of 5 pts are blocked versus how often you come in from the bar when 3 of 5 points blocked, after not following the 'hint' Also checked the percentage of conse utive double rolls which are higher for the computer. Your consecutive soubles almost alws come when game is essentially over Compared games with that of SNOWIE and GNUP and both outplayed this AI logic. |
[2012-08-14] A Google User: DON'T BUY! This game is better than most but still sucks! Most times when you get close to beating it the ai rolls perfect rolls way too many times. That's unrealistic! Never seen these kind of rolls with real dice. I feel ripped off! |
[2012-08-12] A Google User: Backgammon NJ This game rocks! The computer actually makes good moves to challenge me. No more waiting for a slow opponent who quits if she's losing. |
[2012-08-11] A Google User: Not Bad... But I beat "Hard" 90% of the time and lose to "Expert" 90% of the time. Needs a setting between the two. |
[2012-08-10] A Google User: Poor result Cheats, hangs and overpriced |
[2012-08-09] A Google User: The Best! Of the many backgammon apps I've tried this is by far the best. I've played hundreds of games on the iOS and Android version and have no reason to think that the dice are fixed or that it cheats. The hints are excellent for improving your play. Thank you to the dev for this great game. |
[2012-08-09] A Google User: Luv this game. My wife and I are addicted... |
[2012-08-06] A Google User: Best of the bunch Not perfect, but definitely the best of the bunch. |
[2012-08-02] A Google User: Me It gives Amazing rolls to the comp. when you're in expert.... I mean every time... I play a lot of backgammon with people and those rolls don't happen very often |
