Located at the eastern end of Asia, surrounded on all sides by water, there lies Japan. Most of the land’s culture and customs come from mainland China, by way of the Korean Peninsula, acquiring uniquely Japanese qualities along the way. It is the birthplace of a culture stemming from the country’s finespun spiritual climate and its clear perception of the evanescence of life.
The practices of hanami or momijigari celebrating the changing of seasons; dances and rituals performed for enjoyment and to bring forth abundant harvests and rich hauls of fish; the countrywide method of house-building, meant to withstand the harsh environment of the Japanese Islands, steaming hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. These and other Japanese flavors, conventions and customs are all included in this photo album.
