L’exposition réunit 50 œuvres maîtresses de Vélasquez, Giordano, Ribera, Moreelse, Ter Brugghen … prêtées par les plus grands musées d’Europe (Rijksmuseum - Amsterdam, Mauristhuis - La Haye, Louvre - Paris, Prado - Madrid, Alte Pinakothek - Munich). Sa force esthétique est amplifiée par la présence au cœur de l’exposition d’une installation de l’artiste vidéo Bill Viola.

Le propos de l’exposition : comment peindre la pensée et pourquoi ? Elle est par définition une activité de l’invisible. Et pourtant les portraits imaginaires des philosophes de l'Antiquité, mais aussi de saints, de mendiants, de savants, de poètes, sont comme des incarnations d’une pensée universelle. L’histoire nous a légué ce corpus d’images, témoignages concrets de l’effervescence spirituelle et philosophique qui caractérise le Siècle d’Or en Espagne, en Italie et aux Pays-Bas.
