Bike Hub Cycle Journey planner (v. 3) Разработано Bicycle Association |
The Bike Hub journey planner app finds quickest or quietest cycle routes.
AS SEEN ON: Treehugger.com, Macworld.co.uk, The Register, BikeRadar.com, Road.cc, BBC.co.uk and CTC.org.uk
*****
A car satnav uses roads only, the Bike Hub cycle satnav uses roads *and* cycle paths, including Sustrans routes. Bike Hub app also uses bike-friendly cut-throughs and short-cuts.
*****
"Discovered new, pleasant & direct routes that are right on my doorstep!" @KarlonSea
"I thought the fastest way to work was 18:40 minutes but after 2 years doing various different routes, you showed me a path and a couple of shortcuts that have reduced it to 16:50! Gob smacked!" Andrew Norton, by email
****
TURN-BY-TURN
App features true turn-by-turn navigation, with voice instructions and vibrating alerts.
BICYCLE NAVIGATION
The cycle routing - note: UK-only - is done via CycleStreets.net. This bicycle journey planning website uses mathematical graph theory algorithms to quickly work out great bike routes. But it's not just nodes and networks, Bike Hub mapping benefits from local, expert 'community' knowledge.
ROUTE/SPEED OPTIONS
Choose ‘Quickest route' and you’ll be directed via roads (although not dual carriageways or motorways). Don’t care to mingle with motorised traffic? Choose ‘Quietest route' and the app will use OpenCycleMap to guide you along back-streets and, where available and sensible, cycle routes. The 'Balanced route' provides a good mix between the two extremes of 'Fastest route' and 'Quietest route'.
The Bike Hub app avoids hills where possible.
BIKE SHOP FINDER
Fire up the Bike Hub app to locate the nearest bike shops in a six mile radius.
TOURING OR TRAINING
Journey planner can suggest A to B routes of up to a maximum of 100 miles. For A to B to C routes use the 'via' function with + sign.
EXTRAS
* Info on the Cycle to Work scheme
* Cycling and the law
* Best ever quotes about cycling.
SAFETY
Do not pedal & navigate. Instead use a handlebar mount for your phone. If you decide to follow this app's suggested journey take extra care on any unfamiliar sections. Proceed at your own risk as routes change and quality cannot be guaranteed. Dismount when routing suggests using footways as shortcuts. Do not use when driving a car: routing is bike-specific.
TECH SPEC
Route finding requires access to online mapping so, to use the journey planning, the Bike Hub app requires wifi or a mobile phone signal.
CROWD-SOURCED DATA
App relies on the network node coding of the Cyclestreets chaps and they, in turn, rely on the dedicated volunteers who upload fixes and new points of interest to OpenStreetMap. Please consider signing up to OpenStreetMap.org and using a free OSM editing app such as Mapzen POI Collector which lets you add businesses, local amenities and other places of interest to OpenStreetMap, direct from your phone. Or consider becoming part of the OSM community by adding data via your desktop with online services such as mapzen.cloudmade.com.
WHY FREE?
This app is free because it was funded by the Bike Hub levy. This is a voluntary levy on most of the bicycles and bits sold in UK bike shops. The Bike Hub levy is operated by the Bicycle Association of GB and the Association of Cycle Traders. BikeHub.co.uk is the news and features website funded by the levy scheme. The Bike Hub app was commissioned by BikeHub.co.uk editor Carlton Reid and produced by Tinderhouse.

Feedback on this app is welcome. Contact editor@bikehub.co.uk or @bikehub on Twitter. Please consider rating the app. Thanks.

[2012-09-01] Aaron: 12500+ pictures Download a map and it adds 12500 pictures to your gallery. Uninstalled. |
[2012-08-24] Brad: Nats Let's go! |
[2012-08-19] mike: Big usability problems I tired to setup route but that's impossible. Tapping 1st point is ok, add location doesn't work - Searching is shown forever, named village is not found, and can't be even chosen from map. I didn't get even to simple 2-point route setup. So useless app if it doesn't work. Morover: dropped pins are hard to move. |
[2012-08-17] Ben: US navigation? I'd love to see this app support voice navigation in the US. Would definitely be willing to pay for it. I have not been able to find anything that does a good job of letting you create a custom route and navigate it |
[2012-08-03] Matthew: Very useful |
[2012-07-24] Anonymous: Good app - but tired of a certain SPAMMER @Ted - 08/07/2012 - your record must be scratched. Please stop SPAMMING negative 1 star reviews on every cycle app you find, and stop promoting ZANavi with the same level of SPAMMING viggor. This is a perfectly acceptable app. |
[2012-07-23] shillelagh: Few tweaks required, otherwise great! I would like to be able to turn the screen off and still hear the directions! |
[2012-07-14] sam: Ugh It said how to use it and its not exactly simple to do so. Also this app is for the uk. Not minnesota.. Maybe thats my fault but they should advertise that more before im lost in who knows where and stuck with using this as a paper map... |
[2012-07-09] mkbane: Poor Fail to update route/directions once on your way.... |
[2012-07-08] ted: this app is (still) pretty useless This app is pretty useless for waypoint riding, the via function is extremely limited. If you need waypoints use ZANavi, again the functionality is not as good as it could be, i.e. you have to save your waypoints in a recent destinations folder and then sequentially enter them on the day of the ride, quality of the map detail is not so good either, but it is usable; and its offline, free, has turn by turn navigation, and can save waypoints after a fashion. UPDATE:- checked it out again, has lots of really tricky things it can do, shame it hasn't got the basic's right, waypoint functionality still virtually unusable, can only import cyclestreets routes which we know are generally useless, needs to be able to import any GPX route, a complete waste of the bike levy, but I'm sure they feel pretty smug with its advanced (but not used) features, these people and cyclestreets need to get their act together, stop duplicating and deliver functionality to core users. |
[2012-07-06] Arran: Black screen Doesn't tell me local destinations in north london. And when i eventually plan a route the screen goes blank and i get a notice saying it has stopped working. Plz update to work on galaxy s3!! |
[2012-07-04] George: Promising but flawed Fantastic routing but, as others have said, turn by turn doesn't work with the screen off so you can't put it in a pocket and rely on the voice instructions. In effect that means that you need a handlebar mount to make it useful. Which is annoying. And it seems to have trouble with left and right from time to time. Which is equally annoying. And you can't zoom in and out in ride route mode or pinch to zoom in any mode. Fix those glitches though and it would be my favorite app. |
[2012-06-24] Jacek: MrEuroGuy Brilliant app. Highly recommended |
[2012-06-24] Josh: Nice idea but.. "your destination is too far away" regardless of distance between waypoints |
[2012-06-23] Ernest: Nice bike gps Requires internet to recalculate routes. Otherwise a brilliant app. |
[2012-06-17] Michael: The wrong way! Could be better. Especially ad it advocates routes through MOD secured properties! And no way to update thus error! |
[2012-06-17] John: Too far away Error too far away...only 3km and works on others... |
[2012-06-16] Graham: Not bad. The user interface is a bit clunky but it does help you to find cycle routes. |
[2012-06-14] Lexy: Great potential But for some reason has set the bike hub location as my old address (dont even know how the app accessed this information as I haven't been there in months or entered the details in myself) and now I can't ride any route without it going via the cycle hub location. I can't work out how to change it. Pretty infuriating |
[2012-06-05] zwiebelkuchen: Should be a killer app.. but in us just k..rapp What this promises would be enough to satisfy me but on the few occasions I've used it for navigation it has been no use, just a hindrance. Planning the route is great, but saving them I end up with a favourites full of routes called "short unnamed link to short unnamed link"! Why can't I rename? Now I set out on the carefully planned route.. the app is off someplace else telling me that I'm too far from the route, recalculating,if I get to a new road I need to switch to a different app... please fix!!!!! |
[2012-06-03] abigail: 'ride route' hit and miss I'm using an HTC One and found the following: *Good route planning functionality (love POI options though nature reserves in London seems to pick up only a snail sanctuary in Barnes?!) *Navigation in 'ride route' mode was not reliable enough for me to use in an area I don't know. Tried to go for a A-to-A 'leisure' ride and ended up relying on my human compass. *doesn't seem to run in background, if you switch apps it reverts to start screen and you have to replan route. Major pain midway into leisure route. |
[2012-06-03] Christopher: Great app Like this app but maps for aberdeen need updated |
[2012-05-22] thegremlinlives: Top route terrible navigation The routes it plots are fantastic. The satnav is terrible. I had to switch to google maps to get to my destination. Using voice guidance only. |
[2012-05-13] jon: location bug Works better in the countryside if you turn off Google location services (wifi and mobile signals) and use GPS only. Still seems to get confused about direction of travel when turning into a corner though. When creating routes with multiple stops it would be nice to be able to select the next point from the map. Pinch zoom would be nice. Also needs to give directions while screen is off to save battery. Using Galaxy S2 Android 4.0.3 |
[2012-05-11] paul: What a fantastic app It does what I need. An average time for set speeds for planning a journey. |
[2012-05-02] Laurynas: Sucks Yiu could atleast update your maps from 1960s |
[2012-04-29] Dan: Needs improvement Would be good with, pin drop to pin drop routing, pinch to zoom. |
[2012-04-24] Nigel: Needs work Can't accuratly locate me, and the search function stuggles to find common roads. |
[2012-04-23] Alex: Looked good, but... This applies looked good, but no matter what I tried, it wouldn't show the map, even after download. A long way to go on this app to improve compatibility i think. |
[2012-04-22] Uri Stamonov: Great idea but flawed Map tiles never download (cache) . Tried to take me over a ford. Should allow route type (ie: direct, quiet) to be changed without replanning entire journey. Can't seem to save my home location |
[2012-04-14] David: Room for improvement The most unintuitive interface i've used, why does the map need to keep zooming out to uk level all the time? |
[2012-04-14] CompactDistance: Good start but a few vital improvements needed 1. Keep voice commands working when the screen is off, sometimes it's useful as a cyclist to set a route then put the phone in a jacket pocket to listen to the directions. Having the screen off saves battery. 2. In 'Ride Route' mode it needs to use GPS locations only. When the GPS signal is lost it snaps back to the wireless location and messes up the route. It should wait for the GPS signal to be re-established. |
[2012-04-09] Jim: Given up Everything looks great on YouTube but spent an hour trying to do what takes me seconds on mapmyrun & am still baffled & no further forward. Will use a map! |
[2012-04-08] LosOjos: Flawed Has potential but maps fail to load fully even when downloaded via WiFi and no option to view a list of directions to help alleviate this (HTC Desire) |
[2012-04-08] Alan: Marvelous Sometimes slow but better than Google maps for finding dedicated cycle routes. And there is a GPS speedo. |
[2012-04-07] Thomas: Best app Does everything and sat nav! |
[2012-04-01] Charlie: Great app My morning commute is now getting even longer, because there are so many fun and interesting alternative ways to go. It's also great for running and walking too. Easy to follow instructions, and maps, good work. |
[2012-03-28] Jon: Jon Was fine on my galaxy mini but just keeps crashing on my galaxy note |
[2012-03-28] Dave: Has potential It's a very good app considering its free. Picks out bike paths through Parks and bridges where normal sat navs let the biker down. |
[2012-03-26] Ben: amazing data huge amounts of data very detailed. caching works better than google maps. |
[2012-03-25] Matt: Pinch to zoom needed! Needs to add pinch to zoom and the ability to change route type without having to reenter start and end every time. |
[2012-03-20] Satinder: Trys hard should be better underdeveloped app I think this needs more development its a very good idea however dated useabilty planning is haphazard as I dont get town names on the maps. It doesnt pinch but does manually zoom but on my galaxy note still cant read the road names. Great idea badly executed shame as it would be indespensible to UK riders and I certainly would pay for a better product. As it stands pretty much unusable apart from playing around |
[2012-03-16] Maurice : M Works very well, good route suggestions. |
[2012-03-08] David: Good routing for London Usability not great but worth using to find cycle routes. Gave best route for me I've seen from any online tool. Not great for navigation en route though. |
[2012-03-04] kevin: Plan Planning far too complicated |
[2012-03-02] hismightiness: Cannot create a simple route I tried to create a route that I've ridden before during lunch of about 4 miles. No matter how I tried, it kept telling new the route was too far. It also took about 5 minutes to figure out how the app wanted me to create a route. I prefer an app that just works, without directions or training. |
[2012-02-23] Alan: Good but annoying Very clear maps, routing is good. Pinch to zoom doesn't work on Galaxy Nexus which makes map browsing tedious. Search for places can be eccentric. |
[2012-02-15] philarelli: SE Xperia X10i Do you like cycling? Do you like satnav? Ta-daa here it is. A truly excellent & helpful app. 10/10 ★★★★★★★★★★ |
[2012-02-01] dollito: Great This application is brilliant around London. It found an excellent route between my work and home I never would have found. The GPS mode is great with spoken instructions and vibration so you are not distracted while biking. Links to nearest bike shops very handy. Essential IMO for London cycling... |
[2012-01-22] huw: Odd route planner. Too complicated to plan a route and makes daft choices of route |
[2012-01-21] Elliott: Flawed.. Route planning is not an easy process! |
[2011-12-31] eklektos7: Good for planning. But useless on the road. Doesn't work with screen locked. |
[2011-12-26] Michael: Poor Maps take ages to download, even on wifi. No pinch zoom. Location search doesnt always recognise post codes. Havent actually been able to navigate yet, doesnt seem to recofnise where I am, and hence thinks im too far from the start/destination. HTC Desire |
[2011-12-21] Sean: News? Good but where has the news gone? |
[2011-12-21] 2Loose: Great routes Found quieter and safer commuting routes than I had in five years. Fully recommend. |
[2011-12-10] Umar: Really helpful Getting around london and hertfordshire has been much easier using this app. Gave me routes I wouldn't have thought of, and has saved me lots of time! |
[2011-12-07] genius of jalalia: . Superb, helps avoid busier roads |
[2011-12-03] Jon: A nice idea This app is a great idea but has not been written with any usability in mind. No pinch zoom, no long press for context menu, etc. The routing is so so |
[2011-11-07] fishter: Needs to keep navigating with the screen off. Battery life will be hammered otherwise. |
[2011-11-06] fidozgz: Export? Export routes please... |
[2011-11-05] michael: Superb app thanks its fab |
[2011-10-30] boyzie: Saved my Bacon several times This app is great for getting you to where you need to be when things aren't going to plan. My train got cancelled this app got me to work. |
[2011-10-30] Konrad: No navigation with screen off The lack of navigation with the screen off makes the app almost useless. Gives too many "straight on" directions every 200m on straight roads. |
[2011-10-17] Henry: Amazing Just got the hang of the voice guidance, it's great. |
[2011-10-10] Colin: Disappointing Not managed to complete a ride yet without it trying to take me down some overgrown dirt track. Useless for a road bike. |
[2011-10-08] unclshura: Usability is very poor "Dropped pin" is hard to position because it drops to the center of the screen. Zooming behaves strangely. Default zoom level is "whole UK". Not very useful for urban cyclists. |
[2011-10-08] Jon: Works again Had prob downloading maps but got quick response from developers. Useful planning app, don't use on the road tho. |
[2011-09-29] the 10/1/2011 Good, but no sat nav with screen off I planned my route and headed out with phone in my back pocket and an earpiece in. Directions stopped as soon as the screen went off, so not much use! |
[2011-09-24] Deepak: Great idea but it stops giving instructions when the screen goes off.... Whats the point in that? |
[2011-09-21] Andrew: Maps do not render on Sony Xperia W10 mini. Map issue sorted. |
[2011-09-20] Asif: Seem to have resloved all outstanding probs, once again the best bike nav app. |
[2011-09-10] Keith: Works really well and gives clear instructions. The support team are very helpful. Map is stored in the cache if signal lost |
[2011-08-30] Chris: Much improved Map really improved things - thanks! |
[2011-08-28] Big Al: Fixed App updated and new phone - now working on Samsung Galaxy S2. |
[2011-08-26] tei: Maps work fine on HTC legend Maybe because I always plan cycle route at home when I have wifi |
[2011-08-23] Phillip: Now working on Samsung galaxy s. |
[2011-08-23] aiguille: Good upgrade Unable to see maps on Samsung Galaxy S2 - now working with new release |
[2011-08-23] Andrew: Works on HTC now! Maps now work on HTC Sense devices. Thanks for fix. Needs pinch to zoom on maps. |
[2011-08-14] JamieS: Great concept, loads of potential, but maps are so slow to load that it's almost unuseable. |
[2011-08-13] Jenny: A great idea but the maps don't load on my Galaxy S 2. Useless app. Waiting for a fix. |
[2011-08-10] Giulio: Does not work on my HTC Desire:-( |
[2011-08-09] the 8/10/2011 As Welshlaplace reported maps don't load on WiFi. Uninstalling too! |
[2011-08-08] burningmilkmaid: I cannot see any map on my HTC desire hd. Will re review if updated and fixed. |
[2011-08-08] Y: this app is only for uk |
[2011-08-08] welshlaplace: 1 star as the maps never seem to load, even on wifi! Uninstalling right now! |
[2011-08-08] Jon: Could be great but maps don't load properly. Some other useful content though. |
[2011-08-03] David: will be a good app - needs improvement doesn't display map. |
[2011-07-24] Richard: Useless as there's no map! |
[2011-07-24] Eric: Piece of horse crap! Only application I have downloaded that has not worked. |
[2011-07-23] gravid: This app could be so good, but right now it's not. Useful for planning, useless on the road |
[2011-07-21] Carl: Map won't load at all! |
[2011-07-16] jake, redrupp: The maps take way too long to load |
[2011-07-14] Keith: Very slow and navigation tool always states route too far away |
[2011-07-11] Jonathan: Awesome on X8! No errors. |
[2011-07-11] Melvyn: Great idea! Unfortunately the maps take sooo long to load its unusable.. |
[2011-07-10] appandy: It would be nice to know this app is for the UK |
[2011-07-09] Lucy: Brilliant route finder, excellent coverage of cycle lanes & off road cut throughs in London. But the turn by turn directions do not work on my Desire. |
[2011-07-09] Karl: Ok but well behind other free cycle route planning apps. Unable to zoom on written route, way to small - I'm not wearing binoculars! |
[2011-01-27] Malcolm: Simply brilliant |
[2011-01-25] Hugh: Great potential. All the points mentioned before about locations and favourites I'm sure will get sorted. |
