BackCountry Nav DEMO:Topo Maps (v. 4.5.3) Разработано CritterMap Software |
Use your Android as an offroad topo mapping GPS with the bestselling outdoor navigation app for Android! Try this DEMO for 21 days to see if it is right for you.
Use offline topo maps and GPS on hike trails without cell service! The GPS in your Android phone can get its position from satellites, and you don’t have to rely on your data plan to get maps. Have more fun and safe GPS adventures in the backcountry.
Preload FREE offline topo maps, aerial photos, and road maps on your storage, so they are ready when you need them.
Add custom GPS waypoints in longitude and latitude, UTM or MGRS grid reference. Import GPS waypoints from GPX files. Choose icons for waypoints much like in MapSource. (This app uses the WGS84 datum, NAD27 is available in settings).
Use GPS for hunting a waypoint or geocache, for recording tracks and GPS waypoints on your trip, all the while tracking your quest on topographic maps.
About topo (topographic) maps: Topo maps show terrain through color and contours, and are useful for navigation offroad. Topo maps and GPS can be used for hiking, hunting, kayaking, snowshoeing, & backpacker trails.
The app has many built in map sources and allows you to create your own maps with Mobile Atlas Creator. Built in sources include:
OpenStreetMaps and NASA landsat data worldwide.
OpenCyle Maps are topo maps that show terrain worldwide.
USGS Color Aerial photography.
Topographic Maps of Spain and Italy.
Outdoor maps of Germany and Austria
Topo maps of New Zealand
Here are some of the outdoor GPS activities BackCountry Navigator has been used for:
Hiking both on hiking trails and off trail.
Camping, to find the perfect camping site or the way back to camp.
Hunting trips for hunting wild game in rugged areas, including recon for the hunt.
Bait fishing or fly fishing with a buddy.
Search and Rescue (SAR) with GPS.
Kayak and canoe trips on inland lakes and streams or marine, coastal waters.
Backpacker trips: using topo maps of wilderness areas and national forests to navigate on trails with the GPS.
Snow adventures including snowmobiling, skiing (alpine or cross country) and snowshoeing.
This a great addition to the outdoor gear you bought at Cabelas, REI, or another outdoor store. Your android phone could substitute for a Garmin or Magellan outdoor handheld GPS!
Find your own ways to have fun in the outdoors. Be a maverick by venturing into new territory beyond cell service boundaries. Become a pro at navigation with GPS.
BackCountry Navigator has been previously available on WM devices and preloaded on the Trimble Nomad outdoor rugged device. This Android version is more flexible, featured, and fun.

[2013-10-09] A Google User: Must purchase maps separately Like the app but after purchasing "Pro" version, discovered that the "premium" map packs are not part of the full version and must still be purchased separately...and some require a yearly subscription. #disappointed |
[2013-10-07] A Google User: The best. The best thing currently available at what it does. |
[2013-10-06] A Google User: Awesome |
[2013-10-05] A Google User: Best app for finding and mapping atv and snowmobile trails! Awesome app keep up the good work! |
[2013-10-05] A Google User: Fantastic app, remember to cache fully zoomed areas before travelling! Took this hiking to evaluate it, and ended up using it far more than the paper Explorer map we bought! Being able to venture further afield as well as use GPS and in-built compass just when wanted (both usually turned off) was great. I think I'll certainly look at the Pro version for the next trip. |
[2013-10-04] A Google User: A+ Great app. Doing search and rescue and very helpful. |
[2013-09-23] A Google User: map does not show up The app worked fine for several days and then the map does not show up and the screen showed "(Dynamic Loading Off)". How to turn that thing on? I got help from CritterMap Software LLC, and the problem above is no longer a problem. Good job and many thanks. Still examining the app, and feel the more familiar with the app and the more pleasure to use it. |
[2013-09-23] A Google User: Excellent for what I need, ATV and fishing. |
[2013-09-17] A Google User: Great App I love this app. Maybe it will get me in trouble someday but I have stopped buying maps for my wilderness adventures. What I love most is I can be somewhere on a Ellingwood ridge headed up to La Plata Peak, a long and grueling day, look at this app and see exactly where I am on the ridge. I can also coordinate way points in guidebooks with way points on the app so I know when I am at a crucial point where I should go to the left side of a ridge instead of the right. More things I love bout this app is the huge selection of map views I have as well as satellite imagery. Best of all I can download areas I will be going into my phone so that no connection is needed to access them. That goes for the topo maps and satellite imagery and any map I choose to download. Luckily I do know how to use a compass and typically have spent so much time staring at the maps on this app before I ever hit the off trail areas that should my phone go down, I ought to be okay without paper maps. |
[2013-09-14] A Google User: Awesome app Use this mapping system for hunting, scouting and trips in the woods with the dogs. Tried other apps but kept comparing them to this one. Worth the buy. |
[2013-09-14] A Google User: You must never try to get a Magella Excelent app with the best integration with open source GPS sites like GPS Viewer! |
[2013-09-12] A Google User: Decent GPS navigator Says 21 day trial, but once I downloaded, it says I have 5 days left. Also needs Google maps as an option, most all the maps have poor resolution in comparison. Still looking for the cool topo option that visible on its logo. Waypoints are easy to create and modify. Still waiting to try out the tracking option. |
[2013-09-08] A Google User: Garbage Froze my phone when I first opened it. Uninstalled after I had to restart my phone. Do not install!!! Atrix HD. |
[2013-08-31] A Google User: ??? what do you do |
[2013-08-31] A Google User: An excellent mapping and navigation application I have been using this for two years in Canada where we do not have as many map options as some other countries and it works very, very well. I soon purchased the Pro Version because it is well worth the money. All smartphones are not created equal so I cannot say how well it works on all of them but aside from some delay in getting an initial fix on a Samsung Galaxy it worked as well as the Galaxy GPS would permit. Now that I have a Nexus 4 I notice a big improvement in attaining an initial fix and maintaining a lock. Highly recommended |
[2013-08-29] A Google User: Awesome I am an avid hunter and this is the best program I have ever used better than my Garmin GPS handheld |
[2013-08-14] A Google User: Kooooo Should be good for hiking and keeping track of where I get lost |
[2013-08-10] A Google User: Awesome Used this today at a military installation in tx ti find my bow blind spot using utm coordinates. Worked like a champ. Found my spot, marked it, recorded my path back out. |
[2013-07-13] A Google User: BackCountry Battery Killer!!!! So, here is what I did. With "Keep GPS ON" enabled the app was consuming a lot more battery than Google maps. So I said to myself to try it with "Keep GPS ON" disabled. It did seem to consume less battery. Then I came at home, turned off the GPS, charged the phone fully, then watched a movie during which I did not used the phone at all (so the phone was in standby for 2 hours). After the movie, I checked the phone (Nexus 4) and the battery was at 50%!! Looking at battery stats for the 2 hours of standby, BackCountry Nav was accounting for 68% of battery consumption and the rest was the android system, probably because of BackCountry Nav calls to system services. Just for info, my phone is very efficient in standby without this app (it only discharges a few percents over a whole night). Needless to say that if this app kills the battery, then it does not matter AT ALL ANYMORE what features it has! |
[2013-07-06] A Google User: App does exactly what I needed. I wanted an app to track where I went, and where my current location is, that also had a variety of maps, then show statistics about my trip - this app does this very nicely. Some option changes, and overall app navigation could be a bit more intuitive. I struggled to find a few features and/or change some options. |
[2013-07-05] A Google User: Does what it says.. A nice enhancement would be pre-configuring other sources of offline maps. Also, it would be a good idea to add some of stat fields (speed, position, etc) to the compass screen. Would definitely buy... |
[2013-07-02] A Google User: Crashes Wont load map sources |
[2013-06-20] A Google User: Excellent app for backcountry travel I purchased the paid version about three years ago and I've been extremely pleased. I researched and demoed others before buying and none had the combination of features and functionality of BC Nav. Since then it's only gotten better. Despite being very good already the app is still being actively developed with new features. If you spend time outdoors this app is well worth your time. |
[2013-05-29] A Google User: Excellent I'm a tough sell but after trialling this I bought it |
[2013-05-28] A Google User: Useless demo I'd be happy to buy if this is any use in UK, but either it doesn't work or demo version makes it difficult to find out. |
[2013-05-20] A Google User: Awesome |
[2013-05-13] A Google User: Nice app Nice interface - A great mapping app. |
[2013-05-05] A Google User: Does what I need. Worth the fee. I can enter, edit, and export my waypoints. Good user interface. I couldn't find some familiar trails on the maps, but that appears to be a matter with the map providers. |
[2013-04-15] A Google User: Better than Standalone Wow! You really nailed it with this one! I have used many gps units for anything from hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, geocaching, etc. This app has made me want to sell mu other units.I love how you can change the map type from topo to arieal or even both! Can't wait untill I really know how to use this programme! Awesome Awesome Awesome Nathan!!!! |
[2013-04-14] A Google User: Best ever For wheel enthusiasts, hikers, bikers, geo cachers. Best app ever |
[2013-04-14] A Google User: Great trial version |
[2013-04-13] A Google User: Dirt work Black screen with + signs (australia) |
[2013-04-13] A Google User: Hard to use Uninstalling. Note 2 No map. Black screen for satellite view |
[2013-04-11] A Google User: Great on the trail I have used yhis app twice now while hiking. With GPS only service, I was able to see and navigate without any ptoblem. Very accurate. Set waypoints on Appalachian Trail and was able to locate off trail water source. Very nice app!! |
[2013-04-11] A Google User: Asus TF700 works well! Saw some reviews otherwise and thought I would add my experience.... It has many great features we were looking for. Although the zoomed in high resolutions are not as good as we need the dev is working with us to make it even better. I recommend. |
[2013-04-06] A Google User: Great app This is a great app! Good work devs, I will be getting the pro version. |
[2013-04-04] A Google User: Perfect! Lovely topo maps. Easy track recording that imports into Google Earth easily for playback. Great for hikers, and everyone else, I'd bet. I'm-a-buyin'. You can pre-download, but material is not automatically cached. (Good!) I Pre-loaded it with my stomping grounds using the offline options. |
[2013-04-03] A Google User: Amazing As a professional adventurous training instructor I found the peace of mind of knowing that if my skills let me down I had this app to help me out. Very impressed. |
[2013-04-02] A Google User: Works well with New Zealand topo maps Having tried the Demo version I went on and purchased the Pro version. My main objectives were to cache maps on my ASUS Transformer TF101 for use when there is no internet access; and to cache the same maps on my Sony Xperia P LT22i as a backup for my dedicated hiking GPS unit. This would all be for use in New Zealand - the app downloads New Zealand topo maps from a free source. Of the outdoor oriented Android GPS applications I tried, this one seemed the most well thought out and practical for my purposes. Stability has been good too. |
[2013-04-01] A Google User: Just what I always wanted This is a great app. It does everything I could wish for. The fact that there are so many downloadable maps which are free of charge is a huge bonus. Works flawlessly on my XOOM. Thank you. |
[2013-03-20] A Google User: No nz map No nz map, xxxxxx only |
[2013-03-20] A Google User: Rss their way They've invented a new way to display rss feeds that's far from intuitive. I just want simple. |
[2013-03-20] A Google User: Black screen I spent more than three hours trying to get the right map source.. Most of the time all i got was a black screen. When i did download an area and went away from the wi fi it went back to black screen.. The only thing that worked ALL the time was the add for more money .If the trial is the same as the pro not good. |
[2013-03-17] A Google User: Great gps... if you're in the US I bought this app because I am backpacking Nepal and wanted some kind of gps. There are no maps available in very popular areas. I am disappointed by this and wish I knew only the US was available before making my puchase, but will use it on the PCT. |
[2013-03-14] A Google User: Black screen No maps came up - all I got was a black screen with some plus/minus signs and the number 15 when I touched my location/center. I have an Android Asus Transformer and want to be able to track and mark locations when I am on my ATV. I deleted the trial program and will not buy the upgrade. |
[2013-02-25] A Google User: Don't download!! This a app has to be the worst worst app I have ever downloaded! It so complicated and you can't get it to see more then a mike from where your at and when you zoom out it turns black! Dumb dumb dumb |
[2013-02-22] A Google User: Awesome This app is great. I bought a samsung galaxy tab 2 10.1 to have a gps in my jeep on the trails and this app is great no complaints. For the past 2-3 weeks I've been emailing the developers (Daniel) he has answered all and any questions I had. Everything from items I've over looked to more complex things on this app. |
[2013-02-17] A Google User: Will be a great app. Once I found the right Map source..caltopo us24(recommended) it works well. I have not used all features in the field yet. |
[2013-01-21] A Google User: Not quite current... The Forest Service maps are extremely outdated in Eager/Springerville Arizona area. I was offroading today and Google maps had the trails I was on, but not this app. I found it interesting that the legacy USGS maps had the trails on them but not the newer maps. I'm disappointed to say the least. |
[2013-01-21] A Google User: Zoom in Picture should be clearer when maximizing zoom |
[2013-01-14] A Google User: Best outdoor app Best outdoor app I have ever found! Also I had a problem at first and the helpdesk was awesome they responded quickly and my problem was resolved within a day!!!! The measurement tool is my favorite part. If you ever look at a map in the outdoors you need this app! |
[2013-01-05] A Google User: Battery drain Excellent map! but could not keep on my phone as it would drain the battery even when the app was not running. Would have purchased the full version otherwise. |
[2012-12-30] A Google User: Nexus 7 I am updating my review from 2 stars to 4 stars. I tried this program for geocaching. I am having trouble with directions being accurate in my house but seems to do fine outside. Could be a glitch with my Nexus. But I used this program to find a cache that I already know about to test it. I liked how it directed me to almost the exact location. To bad its to cold now to try for one I don't know about. Support is fast responding with questions and help. Thanks for that. |
[2012-12-26] A Google User: Worth every cent! Extremely useful app! |
[2012-12-22] A Google User: Great Use it for land research, nice to not have to print maps and then realize I needed one over! |
[2012-12-14] A Google User: Great Works very well on galaxy proclaim 2.3.6 all you Motorola and lg users need a samsung or good htc. Smh |
[2012-11-29] A Google User: Great product So far this seems to be what I have been looking for for Search and Rescue. I was considering a new GPS (mine is 4+ years old) but I think this will work as well or better for tracking searches. |
[2012-11-28] A Google User: Ok at best While the gps tracking seems ok. The topo map is 30 years old. Completely useless. Sure not worth the price. If map was current it would be an ok app. |
[2012-11-26] A Google User: Very good! Works very well on nexus 7. Offline maps is great. |
[2012-11-26] A Google User: Fast But it lost some data when I upgraded |
[2012-11-18] A Google User: Does not work I'm glad I downloaded the demo first because it demonstrated to me that the app doesn't work. No maps would load. |
[2012-11-17] A Google User: No more getting lost in the woods! Very helpful for hunting! |
[2012-11-10] A Google User: Great app for early season scouting Bought this app to help while scouting out potential hunting area's. Works great! Its nice to "way point" things as you come across them. Later you can go back and decide where to place your tree stands, etc. Love it! |
[2012-11-09] A Google User: Better than a Swiss Army Knife! Awesome little app that is ever evolving! Haven't found anything close to it for ATVing and hunting. Absolutely love it and recommend it to All my friends. |
[2012-11-08] A Google User: hung up & offers nothing more than other free apps nuff said |
[2012-11-02] A Google User: Superb app! Had the demo for a day and knew this was just what I've been looking for! |
[2012-10-28] A Google User: Best app |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: Way outdated My area in WV is not updated!! Very old mapping! |
[2012-10-09] A Google User: Not impressed Rendering takes ages, and from what I can tell only shows satellite views? Maverick actually includes trail maps with names, etc. Not just the tops of trees. And it's free |
[2012-10-07] A Google User: 10 stars! just bought the app and all I can say is, THE BEST! |
[2012-10-07] A Google User: Lake and land distance measure tool Nice app to check how far you paddle s kayak on a lake or hike a trail. Easy to use. |
[2012-10-05] A Google User: Change measure units! Would give 5 stars if I could change units on the measure tool to yards and acres. |
[2012-10-03] A Google User: Deceptive The program is ok but there no reason why the program needs any of your personal and private information: that's just wrong! |
[2012-09-30] A Google User: Finney43 Awsome app |
[2012-09-21] A Google User: LOST? As long as you have your phone and this app you will never get lost again. Well hopefully! |
[2012-09-16] A Google User: Some maps are great some suck Horrible coverage for North Europe or anywhere 'worth' hiking. Great maps for places like UK and USA. But absolutely useless for hiking in Europe unless you want to purchase the full app for $10 and then a full European map for $20. Glad I didn't buy the full. |
[2012-09-09] A Google User: worked well in planning our ID backcountry trips. just going to have to pony up and buy now... |
[2012-08-30] A Google User: Back country navigator Great so far |
[2012-08-29] A Google User: Awesome app Does everything it says it does,, acutely good app |
[2012-08-17] A Google User: Great App. I live in New Zealand where we have lots of wide open empty country. Some of it is very remote & mountainous.I have found this app excellent for finding my way around. No more paper maps for me.Thank you. |
[2012-08-13] A Google User: smarthzz smart..... make me fill save.... |
[2012-08-13] A Google User: Excellent Snapshots, tile downloads, offline use etc. Very useful. |
[2012-08-10] A Google User: Best Ive found for the UK! Excellent fast accurate mapping. Walked some serious Mountain ranges relying on this App with pre downloaded map tiles. Fantastic. Have now purchased. Bargain price if you ask me |
[2012-08-02] A Google User: Not enough zoom. Does not have Google satallite view or anything of detail. |
[2012-07-31] A Google User: Insanely Idiotic Here's what happened. Downloaded app, opened app, selected a map type, phone locked up due to app usage, return to home screen, open app, message says your free trial has expired please pay us for this piece of garbage. Estimated download to uninstall time ... 3 minutes. Don't waste your time |
[2012-07-28] A Google User: Best map app by far.. But.. the 'OS grid ref ' goto function sometimes takes you the wrong place! Very annoying seeing everything else seems to work well, please sort this! |
[2012-07-18] A Google User: Good selection of free topo and ariel maps. But I didn't see lake depth maps. Maybe it is a premium option. |
[2012-07-16] A Google User: excellent I spent this afternoon evaluating apps which I hoped which would be good for walking in the UK. This was by far the best because: (1) Its simple to use - no hours working through the help files (2) It can import GPX routes that I have already created with Quo (3) It uses GB OS maps ( via multi map), The best maps you can get in the UK (4) It has a simple download for OS map tiles onto your phone - essential when you are heading out of network range ( quite often around these hills) I have bought it! |
[2012-07-14] A Google User: Very good Very good from the time I had it in demo mode. Will probably step up to full mode |
[2012-07-09] A Google User: Excellent The best GPS program on Android. Lets you download all uk ordnance survey maps. |
[2012-07-08] A Google User: Expires too soon Expired before I could test it out. I've used way too many crappy map programs to purchase something blindly. There are a dozen different ways they can get someone to buy, having the software expire is always the worst. |
[2012-06-27] A Google User: Love the topographical maps. The demo version took me right to the top of the mountain I was blazing a trail to. Was able to send my trail to friends. |
[2012-06-22] A Google User: Expired and can't be used Expired before i could test it out. There are a lot better out there. Don't waste ur time. |
[2012-06-20] A Google User: Good to see on Android ..I used this ages ago on WinMo and my ppc6800. Glad my fav app is accessible on on a real is now :) |
[2012-06-19] A Google User: i am a hunter but this app really sucks i am warning u DON'T INSTALL THIS APP |
[2012-06-18] A Google User: Bad Sucks, retrieves old maps |
[2012-06-15] A Google User: AP The update this app really needs is new maps. Not a good pay for app at all. |
[2012-06-11] A Google User: Martin This product works well for me and as far as hard hunting elk bow hunters,I am as hard core as they come...period. |
[2012-06-06] A Google User: Fantastic That's about I have to say. Works great for me deep in the Colorado rockies |
[2012-06-03] A Google User: Difficult to evaluate without local data I've now tried twice to download and evaluate BackCountry Navigator Demo but I can't load local (Oregon) maps. Is it me or something else causing the issue? I'm reluctant to spring for the Pro version until I can have a peek at the capabilities. Obviously, the rating I'm forced to provide is meaningless......... |
