Not sure I downloaded this to use for offline 4 wheel driving out in the mountains. It will not let me store offline maps unless I buy it so how do I know if it works? I will not pay $7.99 unless I can try it. If it does work I would buy it.

Free version (at least) not worth it Many problems including: (1) if for any reason phone times out, phone rings, etc., the starting point & path restart and stats restart, data lost. (2) distance is line-of-site; not the path you actually travelled. For these & other reasons I as a walker couldn't get any value from this app. Possibly the paid version is better... Samsung Galaxy S4 & Android 2.2.3

Woohoo! I can use my .qct OS maps. On Android. Brilliant app, if only for that.

No landscape detail when zooming The map loses all landscape detail when zooming in. There is very little landscape detail when a large area is viewed. This is not the equivalent of a satellite type of map. I can't make my tracks go away, so when I carry my pad with me in the car it shows my entire trip. I bought the full version and I regret the purchase, though it was not costly. The good thing is that I can flag and name a location which I cannot do with Google maps. I would not recommend this program. Google maps satellite version works better for me.

Great app with great support First, this app eliminates all need for a dedicated GPS receiver. If you have an Android gizmo that's GPS-equipped, AlpineQuest is all you need. The gizmo doesn't even need to have mobile service or WiFi; I use it mostly with a second-hand, out-of-date, lightweight ex-smartphone I bought for $50 on the secondary market. Second, the support has been superb. Although the interface is excellent and it's one of the few apps that offers everything you want without cluttering the screen with options you don't need, on the single occasion (in two years of use) when I was confused, I received a clear, completely helpful e-mailed reply to my question in less than twenty-four hours. Third, one of the delights of using this app is that it will support custom maps that I create on my PC. The only thing you need to know is that map formats are different between PCs and gizmos; a nifty program called MAPC2MAPC (just Google for it) does the conversion from a standard PC format to the .aqm format used by Alpine Quest

Don't get it Not sure what this program does. you open it up and get a map of the U.S. not of the city I'm in. after I zoom in to a location not sure what it does for me?

Unusable The text in the map is unreadable due to the jpeg artefacts (the jpeg compression is too high!) - it simply looks awful.

Works great offline with OS maps Works great with official OS maps and edited maps from memory map while offline, not sure why people are having problems, maybe they are just stupid and trying to use the live online map the app starts with? Surely they are not that dumb though!! Simply load your OS map to your SD card or internal memory and then select it from the apps map menu then turn your device to offline mode / turn off data connections. Nexus 7 4.2 and galaxy s2 4.2 both working great.

Still the best The best for hiking and quite often driving. The ability to load multiple map layers then use the slider to fade them in and out is great. Load the cycle map topo graphic map for an area and overlay with the google maps satellite image then slide between the two when you want to get the best idea of the terrain ahead. Waypoint your parking spot in a strange city, then use focus and auto map rotation to find your way back via the quickest route. It doesn't do turn by turn driving directions, but lots more.
