GPS Moving Map successor to "OpenFlight Map". Downloadable geo-referenced aviation charts - Sectional, World Aeronautical, Enroute Low, Terminal Area; also includes non-geo-referenced VFR flyways charts.
Please test your GPS with "GPS Status" application (free from market) without the "aGPS"; OpenFlightGPS DOES NOT use assisted GPS (aGPS), and OpenFlightGPS ONLY uses GPS to determine location, not cell towers. Problems exist with Xoom GPS not working if the GPS is enabled/disabled without rebooting. Cell phones GPSs' such as the "Galaxy S" barely work. OpenFlightGPS will not show a "fix" (icons) w/o working GPS.
Aviation charts w/moving map - XOOM/tablet compatible. Geo-referenced, moving map technology including access to all (1) Sectional (VFR), (2) World Aeronautical (WAC), (3) Enroute Low (IFR) and (4) Terminal Area (TAC) Charts for the contiguous 48 United States. Also includes non-Geo-Referenced Fly Way Charts. Individual charts are downloaded on demand through the app; individual chart files are between 2 and 10 megabytes, so WIFI works best when caching maps.
When moving, "GPS Mode" shows graphic (miniature airplane with pointer) pointing in direction of movement. When stopped, graphic changes to a house icon. "Compass Mode" shows the direction ON THE MAP that the device is pointed. Also shows current latitude, longitude and altitude and current map scale.
Designed for the Motorola XOOM (and most other tablets with Android 1.6 or above), but also works on cell phone devices.
"OpenFlightGPS Free" is limited to 2 simultaneous Geo-Referenced maps - maps you have downloaded may be deleted, and other maps downloaded, but only two are allowed on the device at any one time.
Try it out; then get a copy of "OpenFlightGPS Unlimited", which allows you an unlimited number of simultaneous charts.

[2011-06-26] Bruce: Can't believe this is free Honeycomb tablet - works great. If 2 concurrent download maps are exceeded, delete by open a map->menu->delete map to reenable GPS. Description clearly says 'contiguous 48 states only'. Speed/bearing/etc. works great for me. 'Fling' motion on Chooser thing switches between ifr/sectional/tac etc. Dev super responsive to email. |
