Wifi Tracker is a WiFi scanner that can help you see the state of wireless networks in your area.
Ever wanted to sniff out and plot those elusive open WiFi access points?
This wi-fi scanner uses your GPS and WiFi in combination to scan for Wi-Fi hotspots, then saves their location to a file which you can then export a KML file to Google Earth , export to Kismet, or use realtime web uploads to scan and upload in realtime!
Excellent for wardriving in your car, to scan lots of hotspots - it can handle logging the position of thousands of accesspoints without crashing without posting duplicates.
Quite useful for site surveys (scanning for unsecured Wi Fi access points), or surveying large areas as part of a larger security audit. Has slow down options for scanning whilst walking as well, so you can go for a stroll or a run around a site and the scanner will still work without consuming lots of battery power
It can also be used if you just have a passing interest in seeing what is out there - for example you could take a drive around your city centre and see the state of access points (open, secured, insecure, etc).
The CSV export lets you export the data for manipulation in your favourite spreadsheet editor (Excel, OpenOffice / LibreOffice), or visualise access points using the KML export.

[2012-10-17] A Google User: Does What It Says But... ... it shares a flaw that I have seen in each of the WiFi trackers I have tried: it needs a WiFi connection to keep it's map up-to-date. Chicken-and-egg: I'm looking for WiFi spots, but I need a WiFi connection to make the map work. The developer could get an edge over the competition by remedying this. GoogleMaps allows caching of bitmap tiles. OpenMaps apps like Osmand can cache vector maps... Pick one and use it's cache. |

[2012-09-28] A Google User: Feature request This is a great wifi mapping app but I wish I could use it indoors so I could log our buildings wireless routers. Support for manually adding location when there's no GPS signal would be useful. |

[2012-05-28] A Google User: Function NEEDED ! Hi i have bought the app and runs great on XOOM 3g/wifi EURO. I use it this way, upload the scan results in a KML file to Google earth. But I need the Details about every hotspot ( WPA or WEP with details ) to get in the description field on Google earth. Them all is complete of information! :) ONE more request I have a usb wifi card that has more range, you make "wifitracker" capable to use all the wifi cards or let specific the one to use? Like wlan1 ? Regards hsm |
