Wapdroid manages WiFi to save battery power, turning it on when near known networks, and off otherwise.
Features:
-cell towers used for location instead of GPS to save power
-view and manage stored WiFi networks
-turn WiFi off when the battery is low
-turn WiFi off when the screen turns off
This is the ad-supported version. For the ad-free version, try Wapdroid-Pro.
Explanation of permissions:
CHANGE WI-FI STATE
-required to allow enabling and disabling WiFi
CHANGE NETWORK CONNECTIVITY
-required for scanning for networks
READ PHONE STATE AND IDENTITY
-required for getting cell tower information
PREVENT DEVICE FROM SLEEPING
-required for monitoring briefly with the screen off
COARSE (NETWORK-BASED) LOCATION
-required for location information
FULL INTERNET ACCESS
-required to get cell tower information

In the most aggressive setting you would have to let any BACKground app that needs net use 3G/2G Optimally it should have had a "white list" for apps that would invoke wifi when active in background. |

[2010-03-16] Bryan: Wapdroid works by auto adding cells that are within an AP's range. Without this, there would be no way to determine whether wifi should be on or off. |
