A tape measure is a flexible form of ruler.

First, place your phone on the object you want to measure.
Second, place you finger on the screen and move your phone.
Your finger will maintain position of the ruler and by moving the device you can measure the length.

Really fiddly to control. Make better using a sensor where you press start and as you start moving the phone left/right the ruler measurement adjusts

The app doesn't work as it states. I'm using a Droid 2 and the only time the ruler moves is if i move my finger not if i hold it in place.
