This app allows you to toggle between ring mode and vibrate mode either by using the right slider in the lock screen or selecting silent mode from the menu you get by long pressing the power button.

Tested on a N1 but I see no reason why it shouldn't work on other devices.

With Call Manager you can get ring for selected numbers even though the phone is in silent mode so that you won't miss important calls probably in the night.
In the OFF state ringer mode is normal.
In the ON state it will be in silent mode except for those selected numbers.
