Custom Auto Brightness (v. 0.8.14d) Разработано Dmitry Matuzko |
NOTE: If you have any problems or suggestions with the app, please contact me by email, as there is no possibility to answer in Market.
A simple tool to control automatic brightness. Works with real backlight, so it doesn't waste battery on LCD screens. Turn off standard auto brightness in settings, and other brightness apps or problems may arise.
How to use:
Use upper slider to select an enviroment brightness you want to adjust for.
Then use the lower slider to set screen brightness value for the selected enviroment brightness. If you tick the "Demonstrate selected brightness value", it will also demonstrate the selected screen brightness right at the moment.
Tick "Activate service", close the app and cycle screen off and on. The service will activate.
On some devices brighness sensor is non-standard, so you may have to run calibration from the settings (Menu - Settings - Calibrate sensor).
You also may detect minimum screen brightness supported by your device by selecting "Check brightness range" in settings so the app would work more efficiently. The screen may not go absolutely dim, that is normal, most devices limit lowest brightness.
Description of permissions:
WRITE_SETTINGS, SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW
These are required by the very way the app works. Writes system brightness and also sets current screen brightness.
INTERNET, ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE
Required by an error reporting system, required to send the reports.
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED
Required to allow the application to autostart after device reboot.
GET_TASKS
Used to determine current onscreen application for an list of excluded applications, for example, APK installer.

[2012-11-07] amarax: Perfect! |
[2012-11-05] szombatha: So close but no Brightness goes up and down always. Very anoying. Uninstall |
[2012-11-03] Scatena: Good app - here's the rest of the directions.. Useful app, but can be confusing to use. Here's the cheat sheet on how to use it: You need to "Add points" which represent various ambient lighting levels before you can set the desired brightness levels. You do this by hitting the "Add points" button on the first screen, and then on the next screen, move the position slider (which will move the red vertical line). At each position that you want to have a brightness setting (for a particular amount of ambient lighting) click on the "Add point on position" button. Once you've done that click on the "Save changes" button. When you're back at the first screen you can now move the top slider ("Selected reading") to any of the points you've created, and then use the bottom slider ("Value") to set the desired brightness. Hopefully this will save time for first time app users. ;) |

[2012-11-01] Dhawal: Best battery saver for free Always searched for battery app, task killers and always knew display was biggest battery killer. 30 to 65 %. This app just reduces auto brightness to desirable lowest level so u save batt as well as have auto brightness for sunny days. Only negative part is bit reading how to fine tune. It would be so nice when dev provided profiles too |
[2012-10-27] Stephen Chu: Way too complicated for what it does. |
[2012-10-19] Robert: Just what I needed While the idea of adjustable auto brightness might seem counter intuitive, this app. lets you do just that--adjust the automatic brightness to your taste. I found the built-in auto setting on my EVO LTE to give unnecessarily high auto brightness settings. Using manual brightness means the display may look washed out in sunlight while being needlessly bright indoors. With this app. I'm able to find just the right settings at each brightness level for my tastes, allowing me to optimize battery life. The latest update fixes some issues with the EVO LTE. The author is very responsive to user input. |
[2012-10-19] EpikMcWin: It works, but kinda confusing It gets the job done, but it took awhile to figure out what your supposed to be doing. |
[2012-10-14] enigmatech: Save settings Needs a way to save/restore settings. |
[2012-10-14] Brandon: Nexus 7 Auto-Bright Fixed! The Nexus 7's camera isn't that light-sensitive (which is a good thing since it dosn't have a camera light or flash -- it is optimized to record in low-light). Custom Auto Brightness gives you the fine tuning needed to get it's system to respond to low lighting with screen brightness. Requries a basic tech understanding of reading / self-adjusting a graph, but it works. Make sure to change the sensors in the 0-10 range. 3 Stars cuz issues with activating (esp. after Power Off). |
[2012-10-13] buddhistmagic: Brilliant Gracefully solves the problem of the built in auto-brightness often being too bright or too dim. |
[2012-10-12] Joseph: Works great, better than lux free Jellybean autobrightness is too sensitive and jumpy, I liked the autobrightness on ICS 4.0.4 with smooth transitions better. This app is a great fix. It has a bug that it will sometimes randomly become very dark or very bright, seems to only happen once a day or so, or once a charge cycle. It is much easier to edit the settings through the graphical method in this app, than in the list method of lux. |
[2012-10-10] Cheri: Wont stay on Every time I turn my screen back on I have to adjust the brightness again. I errant it to stay bright it a hassle to do that every time. I use my phone a lot. Please fix this its the best one I have found.please fix.thank you |
[2012-10-08] LaneWeaver: Good app; Make sure to RTFM! Good app, works as expected, and works well. If you're having problems with brightness, make sure when you recalibrate the sensor, you put it the phone's screen directly under sunlight or a bright light. If you don't, you'll end up with a stupidly dark display, like I did. |
[2012-10-05] rithambhara: Excellent Easy to configure, and works perfectly. Samsung Galaxy Note. |
[2012-10-05] James: . Keep up the good work |
[2012-10-03] Carra: Good App Just what I was looking for. My D Razr Maxx screen eats juice like crazy (always 80% of usage according to battery log) and I always thought the default display was too bright. This lets me override the native settings. If you want a nicer UI though, look for Lux. (In any case install free F.Lux for PC; not associated with either app.) |
[2012-10-03] Joe: Love this app! I'm walking outside thru bright light and shadows, and will the tweaks its adjust brightness exactly how I think it should. I haven't been this happy with an app in a long time! |
[2012-09-27] Harry: Good for nexus 7 No problem at all |
[2012-09-21] Stef: Great app I love this app, thank you |
[2012-09-18] James: Crashmuch Always giving crash reports, but does seem to work. |
[2012-09-17] Bill: Very customizable The standard auto back light, like everyone says, is just too bright in a completely dark room. This not only fixes that, but is extremely customizable, besides. The latest update fixes the issue with the HTC EVO 4G LTE. |
[2012-09-13] Dominic: Best one so far I've tried lux auto brightness (paid) and this free app is much better, much more advanced as well. Worth the download... GALAXY NEXUS |
[2012-09-13] Mitchel: 2 devices: 1 great, 1 horrible My eyes are pretty sensitive and I hate how my Android devices' autobrightness can be too bright for me even while in a dark room. My phone is an ATT Galaxy S2 and this app works perfectly on it. I can set all sensor values to a low brightness, yet allow it to go super bright when in brighter environments. My tablet is an Acer Iconia A500 and this app now works on it too, allowing me to save battery by preventing its overly sensitive sensor from constantly switching between dim and bright. |
[2012-09-12] Paolo: Great A must-have to overcome the limitations of built-in auto mode on my ZTE Blade |
[2012-09-11] Nicolas: Works like it should! Wow great job guys. I have been waiting for somethingike this for a while. |
[2012-09-10] Tristan: Excellent idea! An excellent idea, with a rough, slightly buggy implementation. Auto brightness on the Galaxy S2 can easily consume 60% of the battery. Manually specifying a dimmer brightness level is a poor approach: you need to update the level every time you move from indoors to outdoors (or vice versa). You want auto-brightness to manage your brightness level, but you don't want the default battery hungry levels. Would be 5 stars if not for minor bugs. |
[2012-09-03] Heriberto: Just Perfect. The application does what it's supposed to do flawlessly. It's very developer-style, so while it may seem intimidating to new users, the amount of customizability is incredible. The definition of a perfect application. Bravo. |
[2012-08-19] akmac: Finally something that works This is lengths ahead of the standard auto-brightness built into pre-ICS Android: I no longer need to fiddle with the brightness setting on my phone. |
[2012-08-18] chris: Great So far I am really impressed...best app for custom configuration of automatic brightness. |
[2012-08-14] NiCK: Better than Lux Auto Brightness It's better to provide manual for detail settings. |
[2012-08-11] zefie: Skyrocket CM9 Great app for CM9 on the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket since the light sensor works, but only in apps, and not the system settings for some odd reason. Thanks! |
[2012-08-10] -: Insane battery consumption App works fine, but it uses way way way too much battery by constantly polling the light sensor on my S3. Didn't even have it set to check the brightness at .01 second intervals...even set to "Normal" instead of "Slow", this app caused "Android system" to be 80% of battery consumption when it's typically <10%. Uninstalled...guess I'll have to use a rom-hacked brightness tweak. |
[2012-08-08] KR: Excellent I cannot understand why someone would not give this application a 5 stars rating. Automatic brightness is really too dim on android ICS and this application solves this issue elegantly. Great job Dmitry. |
[2012-08-04] Michael: Briliant Thankyou thankyou. I was very quickly getting sick of my TF300 brightening the screen for white pages. |
[2012-08-02] Adrian: Not dark enough on Samsung note. |
[2012-08-01] Eliot: Does what it says Took a little time to properly calibrate but worked great once setup. Always thought my display was too dark and made it look like junk most of the time. Not any more! |
[2012-08-01] N: High batt consumption The process uses as much battery as the display itself. Keeps awake SGS3 all time. Else it was a good idea and allowed to determine good levels for applying a mod to stock autobrightness |
[2012-07-31] sadepalli: . |
[2012-07-31] Psyfacto: Great tool to save buttery power Display takes most energy from your battery, optimize the brightness to save the power! |
[2012-07-30] Joe: Awsome It works and It's the best thanks a lot for this. Droid incredible. |
[2012-07-26] juliano_q: Working great I really like this app, it is working very well on my SGS3. It was quite easy to learn how it works and corrected the very agressive auto-brightness on my device. |
[2012-07-26] Acum: Awesome Nothing to complain about. Very little battery power required and developer very helpful with bugs (0 bugs at the moment, with a test version he sent over by email). |
[2012-07-26] Marc: Excellent |
[2012-07-24] Roberto: Works great! |
[2012-07-18] Raymond: Great! This app is great once you figure out how to set it up with the graph. |
[2012-07-17] john: Best auto brightness app I love how you can create your own curve. Not intuitive at first but once understood, very functional. Evo 4g |
[2012-07-15] John: Updated review... Ability to turn the screen all the way down when in a pitch dark room. Stock won't do that. Love it!.....brightness constantly goes up and down. Not sure if its my EVO sensor or the app. Uninstall and back to manual adjustments. |
[2012-07-11] Darren: Regular crashes Crashes every few minutes |
[2012-07-10] Samuel: Nice app It seems to crash when you had more point on graph. |
[2012-07-10] Chris: Nice idea, but constant crashing Simply did not work on my Asus TF300. Constant crashing. |
[2012-07-09] Craig: Great Works great on the HTC One X since the last update. Thanks! |
[2012-07-04] 13LoneWolves: Works awesomely after the update... Works sweet on the HTC One X after the recent updates. Awesome. Thanks. |
[2012-07-03] Swarvey: HTC Evo 3D Works great on this device, finally I have incremental control over how bright my screen is in certain lighting conditions, stock software has NOTHING on this! |
[2012-07-03] Girish: Too Good I now never need to worry or strain my eyes with bright or dull screens, this software manages it in all light conditions.......go for it. |
[2012-07-03] njd: Should be standard in Android I love this app. HTC auto setting was always too bright. With a brightness control widget I often needed to brighten the screen outdoors in sunlight. This app avoids the need to fiddle with settings. But I would like to see obvious manual overrides without searching the settings. And a widget. |
[2012-07-03] Kieran Brownlees: Amazing Does exactly what it claims with great control |
[2012-07-02] Luke: Props Great job fixing the crashes. |
[2012-06-30] Peter B: Great idea! But keeps crashing on my Galaxy s3... :-[ Hope you can fix it, s3 is a great phone except for totally crappy auto brightness. |
[2012-06-28] martin: Superb app I have a Samsung galaxy s running ice cream sandwich and unfortunately there is a bug that means the stock auto brightness no longer works. This app has now fixed this issue and given me so much more control over the brightness of my screen when used in various different lighting. The only problem that I found was that if I changed the sensor update speed to anything other than low, the app crashes but I assume that it is probably my phone at fault and not the app. |
[2012-06-27] Brian: best app ever I can change the curve to any shape. It's easy to use and accurate. |
[2012-06-26] Nikola: Crashing This app crashes every time I turn my display on... Galaxy S Plus with stock rom |
[2012-06-26] EmperoR: Does not work Crashes on SGS 3 |
[2012-06-25] Dustin: Nice interface, but.. .. it keeps creating a crash report on every screen-on. Seems to keep working. Perhaps there should be an option to not send a report. |
[2012-06-22] Esther: Crashes with ics Great concept but keeps crashing with ics on my skyrocket. |
[2012-06-17] RainMan: Keeps crashing on ics Didn't see any effect... Except crashing all the time. Htc Sensation XE, Ics |
[2012-06-16] Miguel: 5 star app... I want to donate to encourage development. This is the ONLY app that I've come across with such granular control over device lighting levels. Moreover its INCREDIBLY response is SUPER accurate. More than that, the thing has close to NO learning curve. |
[2012-06-15] CBailey: Works great I tried a few of these apps, and this one worked the best and crashed the least. Google really should have done this, but at least someone did. |
[2012-06-13] Adam: Great Does just what I wanted, thanks for your effort! |
[2012-06-12] Luciano: Perfect Only one works fine. Excellent. |
[2012-06-10] Sean: Hmm.. sorta works.. Instructions say "tick activate service" but either there is no button, or it doesn't show on my amaze 4g running ics. Not a deal breaker, but it means I can't DEactivate service without uninstalling. Also, the controls are robust, but it would be more user friendly if there were "presets" that set certain options for things lime hysterious, or maybe a setup process.. then advanced settings if there are still issues. I'm going to email the dev this feedback too, this is mainly for those looking to use it.. |
[2012-06-10] Nathan: Work fine in HTC One X Good apps to override stock auto brightness |
[2012-06-04] golden.igor: Terrible After phone is awake in about 3 seconds screen dims to the point where u can't see anything on the screen no matter how sunny it is outside, deleted. |
[2012-06-03] tony: HTC sensation Works perfectly. |
[2012-05-26] scott087: Update..getting better!! Update 5/26. Seems to be working much better!! Old review..Agree that it worked well before update. Now it gives readings from the light sensor all over the graph...it oscillates like crazy and switches way too quickly. Look at the yellow bar showing the sensor value and how it jumps all around. Can't use it anymore please fix this! Galaxy nexus |
[2012-05-26] Vito: Removed Comment removed. Market can't remove comments. |
[2012-05-20] Bob Blaylock: Good once you get it set up, but a pain to set up. The principle on which this app works is simple and obvious to me, and once I got it set up, it works very well. I can now read my screen comfortably in bright sunlight, in a darkened room, and everywhere in between. There are some serious ergonomic issues involved in setting it up. The controls for setting up the response curve are awkward and difficult to use. It's much too easy to mess up parts of the curve that you previously had right, and it's more difficult than it ought to be to put such settings right again. Five stars for the result, but one star for the bad ergonomics. |
[2012-05-17] Andrew G: no longer working Update 5/16/12 - No longer works on my HTC DI2 since latest release. to bad, i liked the app and it worked ok for ~9mo. |
[2012-05-15] Thadanator: Confusing Settings are crucial for correct performance, but settings are ambiguous and confusing. This app needs the option for hysteresis for DIMMING but not for brightening. |
[2012-05-07] MAXie: Good. My stock auto brightness did not get the screen dark enogh in low to 0 light conditions, but this program does the job + is totaly customisable. |
[2012-05-05] Billy: Twitchy Very twitchy, even with all smoothing options and hysterisis options on. Htc Rezound |
[2012-05-04] MonkY: Doesn't work on Galaxy Note Doesn't work on Galaxy Note. I've tried... |
[2012-05-02] R: Excellent app, but ... Excellent app. Allows you to completely tune the screen brightness for preset light sensor input levels. Only request is more resolution in steps at the low end (min to second scale step). On my Atrix, that first step is from 3 to 10, and it's way too much. |
[2012-04-29] James: Awesome concept. Unfortunately though, it doesn't work on my Galaxy SII phone. I read and reread the instructions, and experimented with lots of settings, but this app was always overridden by the Ice Cream Sandwich defaults. |
[2012-04-25] Tong: Exactly what I need Not showing current sensor reading on HTC raider tho |
[2012-04-23] Aly: Very good for GNote Custom Auto Brightness has a good interface and is very useful. It was the first brightness app to really work on my Galaxy Note (I have tried 4!). It also saves battery. |
[2012-04-22] powdered: update broke it on captivate the sensor readings are all screwed up for the last two versions. it use to be awesome but hoping Dev fixes this |
[2012-04-17] Jacob: Not very good It's the highest battery user on my phone. Significantly reduced my battery life, even though I set the brightness as low as useable across the whole range. App has higher battery usage than the screen |
[2012-04-17] Firehawk70: Sucks, made me crazy There is no app icon. Forgot I installed it and wondered why my phone kept getting dim and bright like crazy. Downloaded latest update and tried to reconfig still no hope on ATRIX2. |
[2012-04-16] Jim: Good but problems Sometimes doesn't show any value for current sensor reading. |
[2012-04-16] Mitch: Great App - Does what auto-brightness should have The stock auto-brightness settings on my Samsung Stratosphere did one thing well...it drained my battery. As a result, I set a fixed screen brightness and adjusted manually based on lighting conditions. I searched the Android market for an app like this and was glad I found it. I am surprised that there are not many other apps out there that adjust the screen brightness based on ambient light. Some of the app's configuration settings can be a bit confusing, but a little experimentation usually makes their function clear. I have only used the app for a couple of days, but so far, I am pleased with the results! |
[2012-04-15] Chayakorn: Latest update doesn't work on Tab 8.9 anymore! Used to work very well. But latest update doesn't work on Tab 8.9 anymore!! |
[2012-04-14] Andrei: Broken Used to work great. After the last update however, it took 19%... had to uninstall. Nexus s, 4.0.4 |
[2012-04-13] skipnyip: Update broke. Before update, the app worked really well. Now the screen ranges between 2 and 8 for a lit room, even after calibration. |
[2012-04-13] Vankog: Love it The new smooth brightness transitions are a charm. You are doing a great job with this! |
[2012-04-12] Darren W: Good But please can we have an option to remove three notification icon when running in foreground mode? |
[2012-04-12] Stefan: Update broke it Usabillity was lacking, but it worked. Now with 0.88, it doesn't work at all anymore. Always showing extremely high sensor values and never changing actual screen brightness. :-( |
[2012-04-10] Mike: Htc sensation Didn't do a thing |
[2012-04-06] Andras: Works! Took me a while to configure it and it crashed once during configuration. But it works now! Great app! Thx |
[2012-04-05] @Class: Not working on galaxy note Doesn't work for me here on a galaxy mote |
[2012-04-05] martin: Works smoothly Does what I wanted, auto adjusts brightness so I don't gotta keep doin it manually. Runs in background so don't gotta keep fiddling with it :-) |
