Great for tablets such as the Viewsonic gTablet, Motorola Xoom, Galaxy Tab 10.1, ASUS Transformer!
Works great with the Motorola Bluetooth Keyboard and Apple Wireless Keyboard on Xoom and Galaxy Tab 10.1. Honeycomb support for the tablet form factor as well as HDMI out on the Xoom. Works well with Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 keyboard dock.
If you are having trouble with the soft keyboard on HTC phones like the Desire HD or Thunderbolt, try changing to another soft keyboard. Seems like the HTC soft keyboard has some issues with BTEP, but other keyboards work fine. Hacker's Keyboard is my new favorite keyboard for use with BTEP.
Now includes Frotz and the classic Colossal Cave Adventure game in the enhanced utilities for fun. Busybox has recently been updated to support SMP systems, ie, in "top."
Explanation of Permissions:
All permissions used by BTEP are strictly for enabling the functionality of BTEP. BTEP does not contain any analytics, or collect any data.
Network Communication - Required so that the shell, SSH, Telnet, and FTP can access the Internet.
Storage - So you can manipulate contents of /sdcard/ on your device from the shell.
System Tools - Allow user to keep WiFi and/or display active if desired.
Hardware Controls - Control vibrator for vibration on cursor keys / virtual DPAD.
System Tools - Install Shortcuts, does what it says.
Known issues:
* On Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy S II, SSH has issues with some WiFi routers.
Thanks for using BTEP!

[2012-11-16] T.M.: Pretty good Pretty good terminal emulator and ssh client for Android. |
[2012-11-16] Daniel: Fantastic! I bought this for its SSH capabilities, and I can say that it is the only Android app I know of that gives you complete functionality with a keyboard dock. It's really fantastic! While the app itself can't do everything, if you have a more powerful computer you can SSH to, that more than makes up for the apps limitations. |
[2012-11-15] Perry: Perfect Love it. Has bash built in and you can select is as default. Life saver. Thank you! |
[2012-11-13] Ola: No utf8 How is it even possible to create a ssh-client without utf8-support? Except from that, it really does its job |
[2012-11-12] mike: Crashes immediately Used to be great, now crashes immediately on ics and jb, no fixes available. |
[2012-11-12] Bryan: Terrible ssh key interface This app seriously lacks some basic features like a usable ssh key interface and ability to edit shortcuts. |
[2012-11-11] Andreas: Great, but.. Just Too big ... But still great Wildfire s |
[2012-11-07] Jan Kenneth: Almost Perfect This is perfect for my TF101 - but it can't display non-latin characters at all and silently drops the character - leading to confusion. Can you please correct this? EDIT: It's been awhile now... where's UTF8 support? I'd give this less stars but for now the lack of UTF8 is only an annoyance. |
[2012-11-06] Jeremy: Great but has a bad flaw This apps features are great interface and all I love it. But the sh gets stuck in a loop invisibly and uses over 50 percent cpu I bought this app and un installed in until a fix is made because that kinda cpu usage constantly is a deal breaker |
[2012-11-04] Ian: Abandoned. No details on where to put SSH keys, developer website has died and the developer does not respond to questions. |
[2012-11-03] Carl: It doesnt work Installed ok. But no input accepted when running. RETURN key works. So do numbers. But normal chars, no way. No reports in the fora. Sucks. Samsung tablet android 4.0.4 |
[2012-10-31] Timo: Mr. T Lack of utf8 support makes this unusable. Wish I had noticed it before paying. |
[2012-10-30] Mark: Bee's knees Very good. |
[2012-10-27] Rob: No support for ssh keys The developers' website has been gone for months and there are no instructions about where to put the ssh key files. |
[2012-10-25] Radek: Amazing tools with Frotz included Simply, worth every penny. I am not going to comment on every single feature this package has. I am sure they are all great and I am going to use a lot of them. However, I have to pick one little app from the extras. Frotz! Dear friend, never ever remove this great addition from the package please. The original Frotz you are giving us just as a little gift is way better than any and all the android interactive fiction interpreters around. I will definitely recommend your application not only to those looking for such a great toolbox but also to everyone looking for an IF interpreter. Thank you for making my life a bit better! |
[2012-10-25] td: Not so good Can you support utf-8, mouse double click for quick copy and X forward features please. |
[2012-10-16] Alex: Awesome. Needs internal server list like xbmc remote or unified remote. Still 5 stars though. But yeah. Intrrnal server list would be cool. Rather than shortcut icons. |
[2012-10-15] L.T.: useful, and as handy as a shell on any standard computer, you forget you're using a mobile device. |
[2012-10-14] Kurtis: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 JB-4.1.2 rooted Minor issue: Check spelling of "logging" in Preferences...in one place, you'll see it's "Loggging", though certainly it doesn't affect app's behavior. I resolved my issue with using A.I. type keyboard through this app's preference settings, so I can fully recommend this app. |
[2012-10-12] O. William: Better SSH than ConnectBot During SSH sessions ConnectBot's keyboard obscures the command line. This is not true with BTEP and is worth the price for that alone. |
[2012-10-04] Sam: Very nice little terminal app Asus TF300 Truly a joy to use; ssh is as smooth as butter (though I can't seem to get encryption keys to work. No biggie though) and bundling vim is an absolute Godsend. If I had to complain about something, it would be that I can't seem to be able to find vimrc or similar (I really need line numbers), or something like rsync. If those get sorted, I'd have to find a sixth star to award this app. Very nice |
[2012-10-04] Mohammed: Great App - Samsung Tab 2 7.0 At first the application didnt work as supposed to. I couldnt type anything in the command line. You need to change input method in the preferences from character based to word based. All in all a great app and great support. |
[2012-10-03] Andrzej: Good enough but no UTF8 Everything works well but it's lacking UTF8 support which is a big no-no in 2012. |
[2012-09-30] Al: Good software Thank you this made my life easier! |
[2012-09-30] Brandon: Awesome Awesome. |
[2012-09-30] Jon: Great App Essential for any developer |
[2012-09-30] Micke: Now working with Swiftkey 3 Awesome again B-) |
[2012-09-30] Evan: The best BTEP has handled everything I've thrown at it. |
[2012-09-30] Paul: Fixed for Galaxy Note 10.1 Thank you for the latest update! |
[2012-09-30] Alex: Nice, but the updates... Why doesn't "exit" close down the app anymore? It was very useful. Also, it crashes on galaxy s3. |
[2012-09-30] Scott: Works as advertised After a quick bug fix by the developer this app works great. |
[2012-09-26] Hooman: Crashes Crashes before I can do anything on my Samsung Galaxy S3 |
[2012-09-25] Michael: Not as advertised |
[2012-09-24] Steven: Was great before it was abandoned Loved it once, but no updates in a year so now it crashes on launch on my ICS and JB devices |
[2012-09-24] Roberto: does not work on jelly bean does not work on jelly bean |
[2012-09-20] Justin: Unusable on ICS Just crashes immediately after opening on my stock Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Tried contacting the developer last month but received no response. This may be abandonware, which is a shame. |
[2012-09-19] Aaron: Stopped working This was my main ssh app for my Android phone. It did everything go I needed it to and did it flawlessly. But in the last few months it has broken on my device. The the gui loads just fine, but as soon as I go into the command line, it force closes. This happens regardless as to mode. (ssh, ftp, local, or telnet) I have sent several error reports, and am hoping for a fix soon. I run btep on a droid incredible rooted and running cyanogenmod 7 |
[2012-09-17] Woody: Works The application works as promised. I had problems running the application originally as it is not compatible with the swiftkey keyboard. Just have to wait for my keyboard dock now. |
[2012-09-14] Whit: Nice - not perfect Keyboard and display are excellent. But ssh-keygen segfaults. And the developer's wiki has been down for days. The ssh client itself is fine. Possibly could import keys from another system. But where to put them? |
[2012-09-13] Anders: Stopped working!? I have used this app a lot and it's the best I found, but today when i started it, it just instantly crashes. |
[2012-09-12] William: Good but needs improvement I love the terminal, but the Samsung keyboard for my galaxy note doesn't work. Hitting keys doesn't type anything, excepting the enter key which works. Using the Swype keyboard works fine. I also wish there was support for importing authentication keys when using ssh. Good app, with definite room for improvement. :) |
[2012-09-11] Chris: Crashes on Galaxy Note 10.1 right away Not usable on Galaxy Note 10.1, crashes as soon as you start typing. If you install a 3rd-party keyboard like Hacker's Keyboard, it fixes the problem but greatly diminishes functionality of the tablet as a whole. This app is great and I have used it for a long time on various phones and tablets, but it isn't compatible at all with Samsung (which is bad since they've become a huge player in the Android hardware market). |
[2012-09-10] aijaz: Used to be awesome This is probably the very best terminal emulator I've tried. Unfortunately since the last update it's completely borked - force closes as soon as it launches on the nexus 7 or galaxy nexus running jellybean. No doubt an upcoming update will fix this. |
[2012-09-09] Brad: Best SSH App for Transformer Series I use the Asus Transformer (Infinity), and this app is the best looking terminal emulator on the larger screen. Even better, it supports the dockable keyboard without any hassle. Update: I had a problem with SSH'ing into a specific host and emailed for support, and got a reply within just one day with a quick solution to my problem. Excellent features and great customer support? Definitely worth five stars. |
[2012-09-08] mike: Force close Was awesome, now won't run at all |
[2012-09-07] Jake: Excellent! 5 stars for multi coloured syntax highlighting |
[2012-09-06] Pedro M. S.: No working sg3 Not working on galaxy s3 stock rom |
[2012-09-06] Andrew: Force closes instantly on droid 3 Used to love this app, now it's totally worthless to me |
[2012-08-30] A: Crashes Crashes upon startup on samsung galaxy note... please fix! I like this much more than connect bot. |
[2012-08-30] John: Does Not Work Installed on brand new Galaxy III crashes every time that I try to use the keyboard so useless. Developers web address link fails. Not impressed suggest Google should allow apps to be sold where it is not possible to contact developer |
[2012-08-27] Rabih: Best utility out there The best utility for my tablet. A single application that makes all other solutions on the market obsolete to me. It makes life so much simpler for file transfers. A must have for any Linux/Unix fan. |
[2012-08-26] Mirandan: Used to be awesome Since the latest update, it crashes immediately when I try to start any kind of session. I tried clearing data and uninstalling the app but to no avail. |
[2012-08-25] Jørn Daniel: Crashes Crashes on Nexus 7 right after the shell appears, please fix. Works great on my Desire Z though. |
[2012-08-21] Russ: Extra download Keep getting an error when it goes to download the "extra features." Unusable. Evo LTE. |
[2012-08-21] Jim: OUCH great reviews - but crashes on install and company website down - can we get our money back? |
[2012-08-19] Carlos: Exellent! After testing several SSH clients and terminals this is by far the best. After converting my dsa key from OpenSSH too dropbear format and defining a few aliases I have access to all my servers. Ctrl and ESC work fine with my pad physical keyboard. I would appreciate a simpler cut&paste mechanism, the rest is perfect. |
[2012-08-19] Craig: Don't purchase... ... Until their website is back up, as you can't use it. |
[2012-08-17] Paulo: Very bugs and crashes Crashes every time I run it on my SGS 3. I wanna my money back. |
[2012-08-17] Chris: Crashing! This is a 5 star app with a 1 star problem now. Please fix the crashing issue! |
[2012-08-16] Christian: Doesnt work in root mode I paid for this and doesnt work in root mode!!!!! Please can you fix that problem???! My cellphone was rooted and work great with other app. Please fix it. Thanks ! |
[2012-08-14] Steven: No ALT key / intermittent crashes Average terminal emulator, but unfortunately cannot correctly handle the ALT key on the TF300T keyboard. This makes it useless to me as a fully-functional solution. Also encountered a few crashes - definitely far from ideal. |
[2012-08-13] Pedro: Works flawlessly, almost complete Works perfectly with my hardware keyboard as well as software. Great customization options, SSH client, and other stuff. My only qualm; no syntax highlighting when using nano/vim/emacs through SSH. Once that is done, this app is 5 stars. |
[2012-08-12] James: Keyboard doesn't work with galaxy tab 2 10.1 No keyboard response and hangs requiring reboot. Android 4.0.4. Works great on my galaxy vibrant and HTC one s, but useless on my tablet. |
[2012-08-09] Mark: Great Works as advertised, if there was some way to do a key combo to switch forward and backward through windows this would be 100 stars. |
[2012-08-09] Nick: Issues on 4.0.4 Great app. But it stopped working on Android 4.0.4. On the Samsung P7500 the interface is not responding when attempting to insert commands. On the Samsung Galaxy S3 it force closes as soon as I start typing. 5 stars when the issues are resolved. |
[2012-08-08] Richard: Also helpful for SSH into device: installs busybox If I ssh into the Android (QuickSSHd, on Samsung Galaxy S3), then the available binaries are rather limited. Samsung ship "toolbox" rather than busybox, and it doesn't even include cp: you have to use cat ! I wanted to add the extra busybox commands to $PATH, keeping them at lower priority than the system defaults. Here's what to do. 1. SSH into the (rooted) Android from your PC. 2. The $PATH variable already includes /data/local/bin, but this doesn't exist: mkdir /data/local/bin/ ; cd /data/local/bin 3. toolbox's ln doesn't support "." as the 2nd arg, so copy that first: ln -s /data/data/com.magicandroidapps.bettertermpro/bin/ln ln 4. Now link over the rest: for file in /data/data/com.magicandroidapps.bettertermpro/bin/* ; do ./ln -s $file . ;done Fixed :-) |
[2012-08-04] michelangelo: problems with galaxy tab 2 model gt5110 I am not able to write any single char or numb on the terminal ... the keyboard is not responding at all. Any idea ? |
[2012-07-22] Pål: Amazing work This is brillant. Have been using ConnectBot for years on my phones and it's been good with Hacker's keyboard. It can't cope with the Keydock on Transformer Pad though. BTEP can! Hapiness at last. Thanks for this brilliant application. |
[2012-07-15] Yannick: WHERE IS THE META BIT For a terminal emulator that is using the moniker "Better," its missing some rudimentary terminal behaviors, such as the meta bit for the alt key. This basically elimiates it's use with emacs. It also seems to FC a lot and has not been an update for almost a year. Terminal IDE is the better app, not to mention being free. |
[2012-07-12] Aryell: Works. First, i doubt this to work. But it works flawlessly and have font size config. Awesome |
[2012-06-26] Greg: How is this the best ssh client Can't save sessions have to create icons for each server,I manage over 50 ssh servers so this would take up all my home screen space. Fails to connect on some servers that I have no issues with other ssh clients. Interface is not layed out well. I used to use issh on ios and that app blows away this one. Save your money. |
[2012-06-24] Carlo: Works well with TF300T Only thing I found that works properly with the Transformer Pad 300 external keyboard. Would be great if the GUI could integrate remembered sessions rather than having a separate shortcut for each one, but that's a minor point. Worth the money and recommended. |
[2012-06-19] James: > Terminal Emulator I've only used this and Terminal Emulator (TBolt running Liquid Smooth) and I can say with confidence that this app is far superior in every way. The aforementioned Terminal has practically no options in comparison. |
[2012-06-16] Tim: Must have for Asus TF300 with Keyboard I've been a connectbot fan for a long time, but when I got the Asus Transformer TF300 with they keyboard, connectbot, nothing worked right. This is well worth the price for what it does. |
[2012-06-11] Marc: Cool Cool app but exit command generate an error message on SG note. |
[2012-06-08] Jared: FTP and SSH Don't Work I have a Logitech Revue, and the FTP and SSH clients both crash as soon as they are launched. |
[2012-05-23] Wayne: Perfect.. Love it. What more can I say :) |
[2012-05-16] Evan: Excellent Handles both my Archos 70 soft keyboard and my USB HW keyboard. Includes ssh, vi, bash, and many other local tools. Hope to see sftp soon. |
[2012-05-14] James: Brilliant just found out that arrow keys are available, which is great. |
[2012-05-08] Mark: The best terminal emulator if you have a keyboard |
[2012-05-02] Adam: Perfection! |
[2012-05-01] Domantas: Nice yet... It lacs UTF-8 support and colors transfer. I want to use it as ssh client yet it overwrites my presetted colors. Not cool. |
[2012-04-25] Craig: A must for ASUS Transformer Owners! This is the first terminal app that allows users to type on the Transformer keyboard/dock properly! Tab completion and control keys work as they should on a regular PC. Even allows color syntaxing! Works great on my Transformer (TF101) |
[2012-04-11] Andy: Almost perfect Would be 5* except it takes 9.26MB on my tablet', and cannot be moved to SD. Excellent console and SSH solution. |
[2012-04-07] Erik: A decent terminal app for SSH. VIM works with syntax color! Using this app with a physical keyboard is pretty cool. The escape key in VIM is mapped to the search key on my keyboard. This keyboard has a home shortcut key rather than a escape key which makes vim hard to use. I found a suggestion to use the bash terminal and then use gnu screen on your ssh host to get vims syntaax highlighting to work. All happy now with nerdtree, vim and four terminals in my screenrc file. |
[2012-04-07] Trey: Ssh key support needs work Unusable for me with ssh keys. Tried to contact developer and received no response. Would probably be a good program if it weren't for my key reqirement. |
[2012-04-05] Andreas: Hopeful Essentially working. No UTF-8! :-( Interface/Settings could simpler. |
[2012-04-04] Jim: Functional & straightfoward BTEP is the only terminal package I've found that works properly with the TF201 keyboard. Additionally, the busybox shell has a great range of commands, where some other apps have broken implementations, BTEP ones work correctly. A shame Android can't provide these basic services itself, but BTEP does provide what I need. |
[2012-03-22] Eric: Perfect! The inclusion of BASH shell (with color) and full support for the transformer prime make this the best app I've ever bought. Mapping the back key to ESC makes this very useful for vi sessions (which is included as well). |
[2012-03-21] Julien: Close to complete solution Using this with Asus Transformer TF101, works like a charm with soft- and hardware keyboard, especially since back button was made configurable. One thing prevents this from my go-to terminal/ssh app; no UTF-8 support. Visit their ticket board and vote for the UTF-8 ticket asap! |
[2012-03-18] James: Terrible Interface I bought this for the Motorola Bluetooth keyboard support. Ctrl works as advertised, but alt doesn't set the meta bit so I can't use it with emacs. Overall, external keyboard support is better than any other terminal emulator I've tried. The bad part is the interface for creating new windows and managing existing ones. In short, it's enough of a problem that I'm mothballing my hardware keyboard and moving back to connectbot with Hacker's Keyboard. |
[2012-03-18] Matthew: Thank you! BASH on Android. Perfect! this is the best android app ever!! you guys rule!! |
[2012-03-17] kfir: exactly what i was looking for This is the best terminal emulator I could find. very easy to use and very simple and clear configuration methods. thank you! |
[2012-03-08] Ryan: Brilliant This is one of the single most useful apps I've ever installed on Android. Combined with DroidEdit, I have no reason to switch back from my tablet+keyboard to a traditional laptop. |
[2012-03-06] Rich: Getting outdated Needs better ways of dealing with special keys. Newer phones don't have track balls, d-pads, and camera buttons. I can't have ctrl, esc & tab on my gal nexus. |
[2012-03-04] Nicholas: Best SSH client out there! This paired with Hacker's Keyboard is the best SSH client you can have on Android. |
[2012-03-02] Andrew: Must have for any linux CLI guru although the point about not having syntax highlighting is very valid, this is the best terminal application i have used. Well worth the buy. ssh to my (or work) servers on my ASUS Transformer is quite beautiful. wifi tether with an android cellphone, and you have complete server admin bliss wherever you go! |
[2012-02-26] the 2/28/2012 Works well with lapdock Use the back key shortcut to enable the ESC key in vim. |
[2012-02-14] James: Works well but... SSH works fine but I can't generate a key as ssh-keygen throws a seg fault. I can add a key from another app and all is well but get that sorted asap. Otherwise, nice work. |
[2011-07-04] Drew: Thanks! |
