I thought that even the bright backlight to minimum brightness is not it? This program can filter to adjust the brightness on the screen. You can choose your favorite color filters.
Model verification, Xperia 2.1, GalaxyS 2.2.

[2012-08-06] Montross: PERFECT! (for LG Spectrum) I've been searching for a screen dimmer that would hopefully allow me to adjust the contrast, as all these other programs would just make the screen "grayer" so to speak. This seems to allow the screen to get darker WITHOUT affecting the contrast (ie my ability to actually comprehend shapes and words!) Thank you! I was worried I was going to have to resort to rooting in order to achieve screen dim-ness nirvana. |

[2012-01-21] Mitchel: Rating 4 since it works I'm going with Screen Filter tho bc you can type in actual % instd of only using slider (hard to do IMO). Bth apps dnt start on boot tho. I don't mind notif bar not dimming either, but adds no benefits or disadvantages for me. |

However there should be an option to enable disable the dimming of the status/notification bar. One grouch though is that fat ugly icon it puts in the notification bar....>_< |
