Brightness Widget - Backlight! (v. 1.4.12) Разработано phoeniix |
Backlight! is a free brightness app/widget for Android that changes your devices’ screen backlight with a single click. It also allows complete custom brightness levels. You can even assign it to a gesture or a main dock for easier access.
NOTE:
1. Any extra permissions like read phone state are due to admob ads identifying unique installations. I'm looking into a way to make this not required.
2. Doesnt work on Sense UI devices (i.e. Hero).
3. Potential conflict with Juice Defender. JD seems to negate any requests of this app to change brightness.
Android recognizes values from 1-255 with 1 being darkest and 255 being brightest. It also has support for automatic brightness. Default levels are 1, 50, 150, and 255 respectively. To enable Auto Brightness you can use the letter 'a'.
Backlight! controls the screen brightness level only. It does not adjust keyboard brightness or other light features of the phone.
Upgrading?
Don’t forget to add/re-add the widgets to the home screen!

[2013-08-12] A Google User: Terrible Its a worthless app.Screwed backlight of my phone, now there is a green blot on my xperia s screen since I used it |
[2013-08-11] A Google User: Exactly what I need A widget that is capable of switching the brightness between auto and full. My only disappointment is the design of the widget itself, as it could be much nicer looking. It's too big compared to other icons and widgets and looks kind of ugly. |
[2013-08-06] A Google User: Perfect Exactly what I was looking for; 100% brightness to auto in one touch! |
[2013-08-02] A Google User: Version 1.4.12 still requires unjustified memory A very simple app shouldn't require so much space on phone memory. I had to downgrade it to version 1.4.5. |
[2013-07-24] A Google User: Great appear Great app, just what I need. Thanks |
[2013-07-24] A Google User: Love it Saves my battery and my eyes. |
[2013-07-23] A Google User: Just what I need. I like my apps tip just perform the basic functions they were intended to do and nothing else. This is perfect. I wanted a widget I could click to switch to several brightness values, and that's what I got :-) |
[2013-06-20] A Google User: Good application. Does its job. |
[2013-06-14] A Google User: Sweet. Great app on my Razr HD. Very configurable. Nice looking widget. Separate widget for setup. |
[2013-06-06] A Google User: Cool app! Nice app. Default widget has 4 convenient brightness settings so no more fumbling for brightness settings but just tap tap tap and your good to go. |
[2013-06-06] A Google User: Extremely handy Had a need and solved it. Easy as that! |
[2013-06-05] A Google User: Exactly what I was looking for |
[2013-05-23] A Google User: Great app Exactly what I was looking for. |
[2013-04-30] A Google User: Finally Finally a brightness toggle that doesn't force unnecessary brightness levels on you. The only settings I want are zero and like eighty percent for when I'm in the car or outside. and maybe auto. i also like how you can set the order that they cycle through. so you dont have to awkwardly climb up to the proper brightness level. oh yea, and it fits where need it. on the shortcuts bar! |
[2013-04-11] A Google User: Awosem A must have app just one click away |
[2013-03-30] A Google User: Update icon The apk icon looks very ugly on my screen. Plz change it... |
[2013-01-24] A Google User: I love it I'm always picky about my brightness, so this Is great! |
[2013-01-23] A Google User: Perfect. Simple. Customizable. GREAT BRIGHTNESS WIDGET! |
[2013-01-19] A Google User: Screw auto brightness I hated Android auto brightness function. I preferred my own sets of brightness setting. Set this up correctly. Put a widget. At a click you can chg your brightness settings easily. |
[2013-01-09] A Google User: Neat idea but... After setting it up initially,I can't figure out how to get back to the settings to tweak it. |
[2012-12-22] A Google User: Look no further... Can preset your brightness levels, one touch widget to increase, and its free. Setup is a slight challenge, but hey, its free so STFU... |
[2012-12-21] A Google User: doesn't work it literally does nothing when I touch the bulb icon. uninstalled. |
[2012-12-03] A Google User: Simple and reconfigurable Just what I needed. Though levels below 1 would be cool. Stupidly the app doesn't open it's settings, though. (Doesn't work on Arc S.) |
[2012-11-26] A Google User: vry vry excellent |
[2012-11-22] A Google User: Exactly what I needed Fast way to get the correct brightness, on my HTC desire S. |
[2012-11-21] A Google User: Only Usable Widget I've Seen I've been looking for a 4x1 brightness widget for some time, but this is much more useful. I love having my presets, and the small size. To the reviewers who asked, it's probably a DMX protocol, hence the 0-255 scale. I like it better than percentages anyway. |
[2012-11-14] A Google User: Caused issue with nexus 7 shutdown App ok, but caused issue with nexus shutdown and i had to force safe mode to uninstall app to fix. For that reason only giving 3 stars as there's some kind of bug with the nexus. |
[2012-11-07] A Google User: Simply the best Not easy to configure but great to use. |
[2012-11-03] A Google User: Need a zero value Can't reduce brightness any further on galaxy s3. Uninstalling. |
[2012-11-02] A Google User: Excellent! Prefect app for adjusting brightness, straight forward and easy to use. |
[2012-11-02] A Google User: Best Brightness Widget!!! The brightness app that we all need in our busy lives. A simple toggle button with a nice lightbulb icon. You preset however many brightness values you want and the widget will do the rest!!! Now just tap the lightbulb icon and it will toggle between the values you preset. It would be nice if you could set the values in a percentage scale of 1-100 instead of the weird scale of 1-255. |
[2012-10-23] A Google User: Essential Auto brightness was killing my battery. Other widgets had too many or too few levels at the wrong levels. This gives me the control I want. |
[2012-10-18] A Google User: S2 Perfect! |
[2012-10-10] A Google User: Most useful brightness widget Great being able to toggle through customizable brightness levels with a push of a button. I have Auto, low, medium, and medium-high settings. The fixed brightness settings work well when I need to override Auto brightness to save battery. |
[2012-09-30] A Google User: Perfect Exactly what I was looking for ... Rapid brightness change with as few touches as possible |
[2012-09-30] A Google User: Finally, a good brightness widget Sensible. Probably as good as a brightness widget can be until Android has more intelligence. |
[2012-09-26] A Google User: Best I found I wanted a BAcklight with three settings and off. This is the only one I have ever found. |
[2012-09-25] A Google User: Works Virker fint, man kan selv vælge hvilke lysstyrker man skifter mellem, og hvor mange man vil ha. Lidt mærkeligt at man skal have en widget for at komme i setup ... men til at leve med. |
[2012-09-25] A Google User: WORKS GREAT.....SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 U CAN SET FOR MORE THAN 4 PRESETS, AS U WISH, PUT IT ON YOUR DESKTOP,PRESS TILL U GET THE BRIGHTNESS AS U WANT, AWESOME....ITS LESS OF A PAIN THEN USING THE PHONES SETTINGS AND 3 OR 4 CLICKS !!! DOWNLOAD IT, ITS SIMPLE AND COOL, SHOWS THE WIDGET WITH THE CURRENT SCREEN BRIGHTNESS % :) |
[2012-09-22] A Google User: The best. The developer read my mind. This is very practical and user friendly. I have tried other widgets, but this is the best. |
[2012-09-14] A Google User: Perfect Great work. |
[2012-09-12] A Google User: needs icon fix A very good working widget, but the icon is too big and does not align with the others. |
[2012-09-12] A Google User: Ugly and user-unfriendly |
[2012-09-08] A Google User: Great app...!! Thx for making this app.. It works perfectly.... |
[2012-09-03] A Google User: Does what it's meant to do I just needed two settings: one for natural light, one for electric. Could use a fader to set the brightness level, though, 0-255 is very unfriendly. |
[2012-08-27] A Google User: Njal Excellent app! |
[2012-08-21] A Google User: Perfect Exactly what I was looking for; simple, customisable, includes ambient light sensor...perfect widget |
[2012-08-12] A Google User: Uses more permissions than advertised According to multiple privacy protection apps, this app uses the "phone state and identity" permission, I have no idea what for. But if you don't allow it, setup won't work. Why is this needed? Will give five stars if this is explained or fixed because I love the ability to set own values and decide on how many values to cycle through, exactly what I was looking for. |
[2012-08-11] A Google User: Lifesaver on the S3 in conjunction with Apex Use this with Apex Launcher to map your home key for toggling the brightness. You won't need to see the screen to hit any widgets which is handy when... you can't see the screen! Great little widget, thanks developer!! |
[2012-08-11] A Google User: S2 Disables brightness settings from android settings |
[2012-08-08] A Google User: 赞!! 一个图标搞定 赞!! |
[2012-07-30] A Google User: Privacy issue Those permissions.. what are its purposes? I can do without those and app still works. There are similar apps in the play store without such permissions needed also. |
[2012-07-21] A Google User: Good App Good app. Works on LG Optimus S and Asus Transformer. Only 4 stars because of how the brightness levels are configured..not easy to figure out what number represents a percentage but can be done. 5 Star, excellent developer support. Aldo works on Samsung E4GT. |
[2012-07-15] A Google User: Ans Good one |
[2012-07-14] A Google User: Just what I was looking for. |
[2012-07-14] A Google User: Perfect for me |
[2012-07-13] A Google User: Just what I needed! Perfect. Was using one with a slider bar & it never was on the percentage I wanted. Used the examples given in a previous review with the addition of one for 20%. Excellent! |
[2012-07-11] A Google User: Cute widget, custom settings! This widget found my sweet spot. I like the tiny light bulb widget option, and the custom brightness settings also. - Samsung Galaxy S3 |
[2012-07-06] A Google User: DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING! IT'S PERFECT! People always want to fix something that's not broken. This is simplicity and perfection! Fits easily on home screen for easy access, eye catching icon, make as many settings as you want and scroll through them quickly for various situations-- EASY ON EYES AND SAVE ON BATTERY! Thank You!!! (JUST PLEASE DON'T CHANGE THE ICON TO ONE OF THOSE PIG TAIL LIGHT BULBS-LOL) :-):-):-):-):-) 5 smiles for 5 stars. 15%(40)-25%(65)-40%(103)-60%(155)-75%(193)-100%(255) |
[2012-07-02] A Google User: HTC desire hd Works as described |
[2012-06-29] A Google User: tabulet octa 2 this app is usefull. Five stars app. |
[2012-05-30] A Google User: Superb Perfect! Exactly what I'm looking for |
[2012-05-25] A Google User: Simplicity is perfect Love how with one touch can adjust brightness levels, put a widget on your lock screen and its simple to save battery and jack up brightness instantly when you go outside |
[2012-05-17] A Google User: Awesome Custom percentages and levels. I use. 1,20,40,60,80,100,150,255 |
[2012-05-09] A Google User: Wow Nice app |

[2012-04-25] A Google User: Great app Just what you need to save battery. |
[2012-04-21] A Google User: it helps it helps me, while custom rom unable to fix auto brightness yet. |
[2012-04-21] A Google User: Eh. Don't like the new widget icon. Also, should just give the option of % only rather than seemingly random number values. |
[2012-04-20] A Google User: Perfect App! New update is great! Awesome app got even better! Thank you very much! A++ |
[2012-04-19] A Google User: Nexus On the nexus the auto setting seems too dull. So this app is ideal as u can preset yr own values :) |
[2012-04-16] A Google User: PERFECT Exactly what I needed: specifically to be able to set your own intensity values! |
[2012-04-10] A Google User: Five stars.. |
[2012-04-10] A Google User: Bug with GNEX Every click of the widget opens up the settings dialog box. Please fix. Also, no need for anything but percentages; why the random intensity scale to 255? |
[2012-04-06] A Google User: Device not compatible? I accidentally deleted it but when getting to re instal it says my phone (galaxy s2) isn't compatible? |
[2012-03-21] A Google User: Doesn't work on Samsung i9100 |
[2012-03-16] A Google User: Useless Galaxy Note still much too bright in darkness. |
[2012-03-08] A Google User: HTC Thunderbolt If brightness is changed by another app, widget won't change. Took me a while to learn that A meant auto-brightness, needs better directions. |
[2012-03-03] A Google User: Great widget Very easy to use and does the job with a click... |
[2012-02-28] A Google User: Useful. However, it could use an option to toggle down brightness instead of having to scroll through all the options . |
[2012-02-26] A Google User: Perfect Perfect app....does the job with just one tap... |
[2012-02-18] A Google User: NO AUTO !!!!NO AUTO!!!! |
[2012-02-16] A Google User: Perfect App, it runs very smooth. Custom set option is perfect, I always disliked presets. I chose 25,75,100, or about 10%, 30%, and 100%. I mostly use 10%, 30% is for anti glare, and 100% outside |
[2012-02-12] A Google User: Excellent Widget! Easily customizable widget for brightness levels. Very attractive app icon, and works flawlessly! |
[2012-02-10] A Google User: Excellent! Works perfectly! |

[2012-01-08] vixen: Brightness Widget - Backlight! - Great widget. I just recently found out that you can set as many levels as you want. I do have 11 brightness levels now. :-) @M. your comment was very helpful: thanks ! Widget looks nice on my dark homescreen. Dev.maybe an option to (un)check the numbers on the widget? |
[2012-01-03] A Google User: Customisable Finally a widget with which you can use brightness levels defined by yourself. It seems to me there is only this one which lets you do this. To comment on most recent reviews: Level 1 is not actually 0%, that is how the phones are set, e.g. mine has the lowest treshold 11%. With no backlight the display itself would not shine at all, so in the dark you would see literally nothing on it. The icon is really bad indeed :D Using custom icon with intensity popup instead. Configuring is weird, but desired level can be easily calculated; when 255 is 100%, 1% is 2.55, so just multiply it by desired percentage (e.g. 30) and there you go, 30%. |
[2012-01-03] A Google User: Nice Simple, handy, does the job. |
