This story is from the Tang Dynasty. The Mayor of Chang An, Li Gan, hit 20 whips on an old man’s back with a stick, because this person stood still while others all made way for Li to pass. To Li’s surprise, the old man walked away as nothing had happened. At night, Li went to the old man’s place to apologize for not recognizing a great person and for his discourtesy. The old man had Li drank together in his simple room, and after that, he made a sword-play to Li. Li admired the old man with the utmost sincerity. Then Li found his beard was cut during the old man’s fencing show. However, the old man was gone the next day while Li went back to the place he stayed last night.
