[2012-06-08] Anonymous: Does what it's supposed to.. What complaints, it's a magazine, best news magazine. Plain read and listen, period. |
[2012-06-08] andy: Great mag - bad app Terrible power hog on galaxy note. 5 hours = dead battery, even when sleeping. |
[2012-06-07] jr: What? I used this before and loved the content, but now i cant even install it on my device (htc one x). Fix this! |
[2012-06-07] Ankit Goyal: Nicest magazine for anyone wishing to be broadly informed. |
[2012-06-07] Federicouk: ... Now says "device not compatible with this version", but still working?!? |
[2012-06-06] Joe: Inconsistent So much free content on my laptop, yet an Android version is just as expensive as the magazine subscription? Very inconsistent. |
[2012-06-06] Anonymous: Still No ICS support? I love the economist. I love the way they handle subscriptions (allowing paper subscribers access to the digitaal version). And the app isn't bad at all. But I can't believe that if I want to use it on my ICS tablet I have to sideload a version I tracked down online. Please, please update. |
[2012-06-06] Reece: Kudos! Great design and implementation! Please enable auto download of audio with issue. |
[2012-06-05] Mark: Battery Huge user of battery on a Samsung which already struggles. Sort it out please economist! |
[2012-06-05] Chris: Poor Economist... I'm going to cancel my paper subscription until you produce an acceptable app that is compatible with ICS. Perhaps you'd prefer it if I bought an iPhone? Harumph... |
[2012-06-05] victor: Not compatible with my new Google Nexus phone Android 4.0 is popular with many new devices, please hurry up with upgrade! |
[2012-06-05] Holly: Not that great! Could only literally view the title of articles & not read even the editors choice...don't waste your time & download if you're not going to subscribe |
[2012-06-04] DyOH: No ICS support?; I used to enjoy reading the economist on my Nexus S with ICS, but now its telling me I can't download app BC my device isn't compatible? :( |
[2012-06-04] Lawrence : Subscriber Doesn't work on ics. Sort it please, Mr economist |
[2012-06-04] Bufke: Doesn't work on ICS, you can sideload the apk Tablet support please. It actually does work if you download the apk file. Search google. |
[2012-06-04] Nicola: Download doesn't work The download doesn't started, even if under wifi. |
[2012-06-03] Michael: . Not compatible with galaxy s3 |
[2012-06-03] Phillip: Problems downloading audio I can never seem to get the audio to download easily, even on wifi. I always have to restart it several times before it downloads completely. |
[2012-06-02] Spencer: No GNex? I bought the Galaxy Nexus thinking I could seemlessly transfer but there is no Economist App for a Google Experience Device? Please change this. |
[2012-06-02] chaitanya: Not the best Audio is bad ... hogs CPU and sometimes unresponsive too. |
[2012-06-02] JFM: Good but buggy Not compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S3. Also has numerous crashes and uses way too much CPU! |
[2012-06-02] Christina L: Loved, but upgraded Loved the app and ability to reference back issues, but just upgrade to Android 4 ice cream sandwich and store won't let me download because it says it won't work. Please update. |
[2012-06-01] Ramin: Problem with new version Content is great, the app was working fine until they rolled out new version. I had to download same issue almost every time I opened the app, and now the app its not even responsive. I tried several fresh installs but its same, out just crashes. I guess I will have to wait the print edition to be delivered by post office at their whim |
[2012-06-01] thomas: How can this be so much worse than the iOS version I have had the Economist app on an iPod Touch. Works so wonderfully, I barely touch the paper version any more. Now, I get an Android smartphone. And the Economist app for it is beyond borked. It works (improbably slowly), but it runs CPU-pegging garbage in the background. All the time. Reading or not. No signs of improvement. Fortunately, you can download your copy in advance and read later. So, for now, I'm keeping my iPod Touch around, solely for Economist purposes. Sigh. |
[2012-05-31] Geoffrey: battery assassin Title says it all. When will this be fixed? |
[2012-05-31] David: Rubbish The app is rubbish. Its unstable, uses too much power and battery, and there is not icecream sandwich compatsbility. Come economist, sort it out. |
[2012-05-31] Grega: Doesn't work on ICS Please fix it to be supported on ICS! |
[2012-05-30] ScottK: . ICS support, please? |
[2012-05-30] the 5/30/2012
[2012-05-30] rob: Not available? Non compatible with my new Android tablet, why ever not? |
[2012-05-30] the 5/31/2012
[2012-05-28] edbett: Side loaded for Galaxy Nexus and works great! Although it may lock up occasionally, it restarts smoothly. This is the best done magazine app I have seen. For me, it is much easier to read the entire magazine with this app than it is reading the actual magazine, since the magazine typeface is so small. |
[2012-05-28] cgd: I *want* to love this app, but ... The only devices I have run either Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich. ICS has been out for over six months now, and yet still this app hasn't been updated. What gives, Economist? |
[2012-05-28] Joseph: Great app |
[2012-05-28] Jamie: Audio download does not work HTC incredible. Has gotten better since I first got the app for sure, it really needs to be tweaked to use less substanital amounts of CPU and battery, it takes a long time to open and tends to crash if I try to skip around in the articles. Still the audio feature is fantastic, its great to be able to listen to the articles while I am on the go! Now if I could only do it without needing to keep the phone plugged in to avoid battery death. |
[2012-05-28] Ville: Great content High battery use but almost perfect otherwise. |
[2012-05-27] René: Drains battery. Very slow. |
[2012-05-26] Paul: Wontbwork on lenovo tpt Folks, this app wont install on the lenovo tpt. The app store says the app is not compatible with the device. The obvious question is "why?". What makes the economist so special or different to, say, angry birds. Folks, can u please fix this. I have a paid subscription and would like to use my business-class tablet to read this business newspaper. |
[2012-05-26] Andrejs: Good idea, bad implimentation To high energy consumption. Works in background even when shut down and asked not to update anything automatically |
[2012-05-25] Kent: Fix audio issues My 4G connection is way faster than wifi, but audio download requires wifi. Also can't see audio controls easily; responds too slowly to commands. Please work out bugs, concept is great! |
[2012-05-25] Rasmus: Eats battery and turns phone into radiator The app is cool, useful and practical. There are just two glitches that I have identified, but those are quite big. The app runs a full CPU at all times, with the result that it eats your battery in no time. Also, if I flip the phone, all text dissapears and I have to exit the article to be able to see anything again. Every time I exit an article, it starts from the begining again, so I end up spending a lot of time scrolling down. |
[2012-05-25] John: Love the content, but some design flaws First of all, look & feel of the app is great, and makes reading very painless on my SGS2. However, 2 major design flaws. The biggest is that it hoovers up battery and CPU like nothing on earth, so I now kill it with the task manager every time I'm done reading. The second (which I think may be linked to the above) is that every time you open the app it tries to establish an internet connection, which seems like overkill bearing in mind each edition is downloaded locally (why not allow user to select manual updates or schedule checks?), and makes opening the app slow too. UPDATE: do not download this when upgraded to ICS - I had it on there and the battery problem seems even worse |
[2012-05-25] Ravi: Still no ICS support Six whole months later and still no support for Android 4.0 devices. Massive fail for a publication that prides itself on being a cut above the rest. |
[2012-05-25] Clement: needs ICS compatibility Been waiting too long for ICS compatibility |
[2012-05-25] Hamaad: No support The app is very good and simple. However they have no support for honeycomb or ICS. We need a good app for this very good news mag. |
[2012-05-24] Stanley: Needs ICS support and better battery life Please make it support my Galaxy Nexus! I can't stand that it doesn,'t support ICS and larger screen devices. I'm missing it now that I got rid of my Desire HD. It was perfect on that device, except for the battery drain. |
[2012-05-24] Elliot: Still no Honeycomb or ICS version Not compatible with either my tablet (v3.1) nor my phone (v4). Why does this still require gingerbread? Look at the beautiful experience on iOS. You're capable of doing a good job, Economist. Why aren't you? |
[2012-05-24] Fred M: Updated Review August 2011 Review: No longer need trees. All the articles plus audio, so I can listen to real news in car. Some hiccups with the app: sometimes audio fails to download. May 2012 Review: Still issues with downloading audio. The app also is a memory and battery hog. Even if you force close once done, the app still sits in the memory running various services. The only way to kill the app and its resource/battery drain is to go into Menu/Apps/Running and kill each of the running services under the Economist. The easiest fix is probably to build an exit function that kills all running services. I'm not sure who to email at the Economist regarding this. |
[2012-05-23] Brian: Great newspaper terrible app Massive battery drain. Very heavy on CPU and very determined to run multiple processes in the background unnecessarily. Crashes frequently. Slow. Do I have to give it even a star? Content of newspaper (they call themselves a newspaper magazine format notwithstanding, isn't that just classy) would be getting 5 stars but that's not what's being reviewed here. |
[2012-05-23] AL: We need an updated app for ICS. I love this paper but it doesn't has an app for my ICS tablet. I am sure a quality paper like yours are more then capable to give us a quality app to run on ICS. I don't understand why it is updating so slowly. Even WSJ has an app runs on ICS and I am loving it. |
[2012-05-23] Johan: Was ok, now not No ICS support |
[2012-05-23] Fu Sing: App needs improvement I definitely enjoy reading The Economist, but the app is buggy - the scrolling experience is terrible and not smooth at all. The speed of connection between the app and the server is very slow too. Hope it gets fixed soon. |
[2012-05-23] Matt: Why U no allow Tablet reading? Along with some of the complaints on being a resource hog. Why isn't this working on the tablet? The iPad app has been out for years. 3 stars: -1 for no Tablet, -3 for the resource and battery issues seriously this should be fixed. 1 star for content and the fact the app actually works even if it sucks. |
[2012-05-23] F1Rumors: Embarrassing application Huge resource hog, unresponsive, thinks it owns the network connection, randomly decides to come to the foreground after being dismissed - whoever wrote this should never touch another computer. Ever. |
[2012-05-22] Matthew: Pegs CPU a 100% Very poorly tested app. Sort it out!!! |
[2012-05-22] Michael David: Does not work on Android 4.0 - a shame Furthermore, extremely inefficient use of resources. It could be expected from a magazine that writes about tech firms and publishes a serious technology quarterly supplement that it would be minimally compatible with both of the two major mobile platforms available today. |
[2012-05-21] Jonathan : Jon Same as the others - unstoppable battery muncher and constant hanging |
[2012-05-21] ally: Great content, poor app Audio can only be downloaded on WiFi, long paused between articles on playback and phone sometimes hangs when navigating around the app. Heavy use of CPU makes for poor battery life. As a subscription payer, please do better! |
[2012-05-21] Angel: Battery drain I'm uninstalling it because it's a CPU and battery hog. I really like it otherwise. |
[2012-05-20] Janet: JD PRIVACY!!! Why on earth does an Economist app need access to my phone call records. Wholly inappropriate. Uninstalling. |
[2012-05-20] Flavio: :( Still no ics version, how come? Come on.... |
[2012-05-20] All: Privacy issues This application leaks private info via AdMob to 3rd parties. I've paid for my subscription and they have no right to sell my info! |
[2012-05-19] philip: Good Am i the only one to point out that the economist is as insightful as ever. The. App is however a battery vulture. Battery drain works out as 1% per minute. Get on top of the battery drain issue quickly and 5 stars all the way. |
[2012-05-19] HR2440 Group 1: Bug Terrible battery draining bug. Great content. |
[2012-05-19] sudip kr.: No star should given Google play should give a 'no star' option.this app needed the most.i had tried to sign up for 20 minutues but not able to sign up |
[2012-05-19] Terry: poor not compatible once updated to ice cream sandwich |
[2012-05-19] John: App is horrible! Fix it already! The content is not the problem. It's the app. But how hard is it to fix an Android app? Promise to fix battery drain (and high CPU usage and device heating up) has been around for months. Get on with it! |
[2012-05-19] IanOzsvald: Great app, kills battery For several months the app has been a horrid CPU and battery hog. I have to Force Close to save the phone. Otherwise the app is great and lets me read when travelling. |
[2012-05-18] Robert Dewick: Money The truth hurts |
[2012-05-17] Scott: Not supported Loved this app until I got a galaxy nexus, now I can't even install it. Will change rating to 5 stars when they fix it. |
[2012-05-17] andrej: Battery killer Please fix the constant 100% CPU, Desire HD and Galaxy Note. Need to force kill every time after using the app. |
[2012-05-17] JABITheW: Needs work Although overall design is good, munches battery like sweeties. Also not compatible with android 4.0.3! |
[2012-05-16] Simon: Drains battery Great publications deserve great applications, but this is rubbish. The app uses 50%+ CPU even when it is not being used. Battery gets drained so quickly that it cannot even charge up when the phone is plugged until the charger. How is that possible? |
[2012-05-16] edwarise: Dmitriy Why I can't read the magazine on my new HTC One X? It works fine on my HTC Sensation XL, Samsung Note and other phone - but don't work at my new phone? I even can't download the app. What is wrong with it??? |
[2012-05-16] Drew: Audio Love the audio readout capability but navigating around between articles/scrubbing an article you are listening to is garbage and needs an overhaul |
[2012-05-15] Paul: Phone killer Droid razr and galaxy sii cannot handle the crazy battery drain and cpu load? No update for ics suggests issue not fixed yet. What a POS! |
[2012-05-15] Arun: Wonderful app Great app. But why is it not made for the Ice Cream Sandwich? Assuming that ICS launched quite a while ago, this should not have been the case. |
[2012-05-15] Spyros: Great but. . . This and the audio edition offer the most complete service to subscribers of any magazine out there. Excellent. Only feature missing is bookmarks. Uses a lot of battery and cpu time even when not running. |
[2012-05-15] Jacek Kopecky: Terrible battery drain I love the content, but the app goes wild at unpredictable times and drains the battery very quickly. When that's solved, it'll get 4-5 stars from me. |
[2012-05-15] Yaniv: Battery disaster Great app for the economist subscribers, but this app eats battery and CPU like there is no tomorrow! |
[2012-05-14] EvilDoctorK: Good content, but flawed Android App Economist is great on iOS, but this version for Android is awful slow and has annoying bugs like 30s gap between articles on the audio edition |
[2012-05-14] George: Updated but still resource hog Infuriatingly mendacious app, considering pedigree - and cost - of the content. Does not remember where you were when standby. And HUGE 20%+ battery hog even when exit. Restarts itself in background and lurks there even when killed. Hd desire |
[2012-05-13] Naval: Does not work with Android 4.0.3 Cannot reinstall the application after my HTC Sensation's software was upgraded to version 4.0.3. |
[2012-05-13] uwabaki: More trouble than it's worth. App won't recognise me as subscriber, even though I'm logged in. A real chore to load anything or fetch audio. No less than four processes for this app were running simultaneously, draining resources. |
[2012-05-13] Mehul: Get your act together It's been more than 6 months since ICS came out but still no update for the economist's Android app...why? |
[2012-05-13] Connor: Battery killer I love the app but removing it as my battery dies so quickly and the phone get incredibly hot |
[2012-05-12] kizza: No Galaxy Nexus support! Please support the Galaxy Nexus, it's been around for a long time now! |
[2012-05-12] mrechenthin: Love the mag hate the app Freezes my phone. I wish they would fix the problems with this app. |
[2012-05-12] Jesse: Pretty good Used to work great on my two year old phone. Bought a new HTC one x and now my "device is not compatible with this version." What? |
[2012-05-11] chrix: not for Android 4.0??? How come this app still doesn't support ICS??? |
[2012-05-11] MarkPharaoh: What? How is this not compatible with my OneX? |
[2012-05-10] Erik Heje: Hogs CPU Great magazine, great app, BUT for some reason hogs the CPU long after I am finished with it. I always have to force stop the process/application. Happens on my LG OPTIMUS 2X as well. If fixed: 5 stars. |
[2012-05-10] Funki Porcini: After so many.... complaints, it's just unfathomable that these issues with the app haven't been fixed.. It's a goddamn Cpu & battery hog! fix for fk sake! |
[2012-05-08] Ian: Problems downloading issues App works well once an issue has been downloaded if you turn off data services but force closes lots while trying to download each issue. |
[2012-05-08] the 5/10/2012
[2012-05-07] Fuz: NO ICS support Currently not compatible with ICS |
[2012-05-07] Rahul: Rahul Huge battery drain, hangs all the time...slows the tablet, please fix |
