Unter der Dachvereinigung haben sich mehr als 50 bundesweit agierende Institutionen, Fachverbände und Landesvereinigungen zusammengeschlossen. Damit sichert und qualifiziert die BKJ die künstlerische und kulturpädagogische Arbeit in Musikschulen, Jugendkunstschulen, Theatergruppen, Radio- und Filmwerkstätten, Kindermuseen und Tanzensembles, Chören, Musikvereinen, Kinderbibliotheken, Leseclubs, Kinderzirkussen, Spielmobilen und Computerforen – also überall dort, wo Kunst und Kultur von, für und mit Kindern und Jugendlichen entsteht, auch in der Schule.

Die BKJ berät fachlich und konzeptionell, regt den Informations- und Erfahrungsaustausch an und liefert mit ihren Modellprojekten Impulse für die Praxis der Kulturellen Kinder- und Jugendbildung.
