[소개 및 사용방법]

앞에 역사책이 있다면 한번 넘겨보자. 그렇다면 그 안에 쓰여 진 내용의 많은 부분이 전쟁에 관한 이야기임을 쉽게 알 수 있을 것이다.

이것은 전쟁이 역사의 흐름을 급격하게 바꾸는 엄청난 동력임을 의미한다. 가장 금기시 되는 폭력과 살육이 공공연히 자행되고 도덕적으로 비난받을 일들이 너무나 쉽게 일어나는 전쟁이 어떻게 해서 역사의 중요한 부분을 장식한단 말인가??

한마디로 인간들이 이기적인 동물들이기 때문이다. 남보다 항상 나를 먼저 생각하는 인간들이 나의 이기심을 충족하기 위해 벌이는 가장 극단적인 행위가 바로 전쟁이므로 그 결과가 승자건 패자건 아니면 승패를 가르지 못하였건 엄청나게 영향을 끼친다. 더구나 현대에 들어와 전쟁의 규모가 커지면서 총력전의 형태로 바뀌다보니 역사의 진행과정에 있어 이 보다 더 충격적인 요인은 있을 수 없을 정도다.

이런 이유로 전쟁이라는 시간과 공간에서는 인간의 가장 원초적인 본성을 쉽게 볼 수 있다. 그래서 쉽게 볼 수 없던 전쟁의 이면에는 전혀 생각지도 못할 많은 인간들의 이야기가 담겨져 있고 역설적이게도 그중에는 감동을 주는 내용도 숨어있다. 결국 전쟁도 사람이 벌이는 행위이기 때문이다. 전쟁은 절대로 선이 아니고 세상에 존재하는 모든 좋지 않은 것들이 모여 있는 응집체이므로 당연히 나쁘고 일어나지 말아야 할 행위다.

그러나 인간의 이기심은 그 어떤 명제보다 우선하므로 아쉽게도 인류사가 끝나는 그날까지 달고 다녀야 할 업보라 할 수 있다. 하지만 그렇다고 이를 방임만 할 수도 없고 같은 잘못을 반복하지 않기 위해 반면교사로 삼고 잊지 말아야 할 역사이기도 하다. 왜냐하면 인간은 그나마 이성이 있기 때문이다. 이곳은 그러한 이야기들을 담아 놓은 작은 공간이다.
