[2012-09-11] Sam: Pretty crumby Hugely bloated - downloads every single section every time with no option to change. |
[2012-09-10] John: Ads I'm a subscriber and yet the ads on the bottom of the feeds are still there after logging in. |
[2012-09-09] Adam: Cool Interested stuff, easy to read |
[2012-09-09] Sami: Login issues Downloaded the app in excitement to have the NYT on my android tablet... but lo and behold, when I go to log in, the app keeps DELETING the password I entered when I tap "log in". I'd like to use my registered account with this app but no luck. |
[2012-09-08] Sarah: Finally great news. I am so happy with the NYTIMES! They give great news! |
[2012-09-07] Mark A: Meh... App still not good enough to keep me from using Pulse or Chrome. Doesn't take advantage of tablets at all. Uninstall. |
[2012-09-06] Wendy C: App works fine but For insisting on charging for the subscription, I'd expect nyt to at least drop the ads and banners. |
[2012-09-05] Maruthi: gooooood nicccccccccceeeeeee |
[2012-09-04] Dave: Too much data/memory/resources This app might be useful to you if: 1) you read the NYTimes the subway in the morning without internet access, 2) you have plenty of phone memory (the data is stored on the phone, not the SD), and 3) have wifi overnight or a truly unlimited data plan (no throttling). The app isn't appreciably faster than the mobile NYTimes site, so if you have access to 3G or wifi while you're reading it's unnecessary. It also downloads every story (regardless of which sections you may like, there is no configuration to allow you to pick some sections over others) and many of the pictures, and caches them all on your phone, taking up lots of space, as well as quite a bit of data if you're using a 3G plan with a limit (either overall or before your provider slows your access). 2 stars because some might find it convenient, but not nearly as good an app as similar offerings from the Guardian and Bloomberg. |
[2012-09-03] Boss: Not free and just show few nothing Nit free at all |
[2012-09-03] kid: Works great on Nexus 7! I was somewhat hesitant to dl the app after reading a string of terrible reviews, but my experience brought me back here to say that I haven't encountered a single problem on Nexus 7. I'm not a subscriber btw. |
[2012-09-03] Leroy: LR There are better news apps that are totaly free. This one isn't worth the money or hassle of navigation from one section to another. |
[2012-09-02] Scott: Better Works better now |
[2012-09-01] Jason C. M.: Critical functions missing Can't choose to not download specific sections. Huge battery and data drain if I want to read when not on WiFi. The iPhone app let's you choose sections. Older versions of this app let you choose sections. Stop dropping the ball, NYT |
[2012-08-31] TDawg, TMilli,: Free should mean free I just want too read the news.I'm 17.I can't afford that nonsense |
[2012-08-31] Matt: No app programmers App is terrible. This is the most incompetent big company on the planet. Can't stop breaking news updates about dust collecting in Georgia to save your life. Delete this garbage. |
[2012-08-30] andrew: Not impressive Takes an eternity to load and hangs on movied category. Why not load up info as its needed? Useless ap |
[2012-08-30] Christina: Always forces itself to close. I can only view content about 20% of the times I attempt to. |
[2012-08-29] Salil: Constant freezes App keeps freezing pretty frequently. Moreover it freezes the entire device and I have to reboot my phone every time. Did someone do QA on this app at all? |
[2012-08-28] Vizulefllry: Not free? Get the AP news app. Pretty much the same content and its free. |
[2012-08-28] Kenneth: Great if you don't subscribe I subscribe but am unable to view subscription content. Maybe just an issue with the app on Evo lte, as the website works fine. Still, hardly worth paying for something that doesn't work in the native app. |
[2012-08-27] Robert: The best online newspaper filled with news, and my favorite sports articles on demand |
[2012-08-25] andsenal: Frezzing Frezzing. Not working |
[2012-08-24] SabbaSolo: Hangs on Galaxy Sii ICS (including Cyanogen mod 9) Even when working it uses a lot of battery. Hangs the whole device fairly often - problem appears related to touch interface. Unacceptable on a device with such a large market share. I use the mobile web site instead |
[2012-08-24] Kevin: comments problems Works great overall but if I try to post a comment I get, "We see you've just posted a comment. Please try again in a minute." This happens when I haven't commented in days. |
[2012-08-24] Patrick: Samsung Galaxy S2 freezes phone |
[2012-08-23] Keb: I'm a paying... Customer and they take valuble screen space for a banner Ad? Really? Greedy much? |
[2012-08-23] Corbey: No tablet version? I have a digital tablet subscription and was able to download this app to the Google Nexus 7 tablet. It seems to to take my username and password, but it won't give me access to subscriber content. Even though this app shows up when I search Google Play from my tablet, I was told by NYTimes telephone support that they are still working on a version for Android tablets. Oh, well. I dropped back to a smart phone only subscription. |
[2012-08-22] Amir: Go NY GO |
[2012-08-21] hoodslide: Font No way to set font for section listings; article font is miniscule (normal) or grandpa-sized (large) on a Sensastion. Paywall price is way too high. |
[2012-08-21] Renee: No news Does not update the news when I press the Update button. In this case no news is bad news. |
[2012-08-20] Nick: Useless w/o subscription |
[2012-08-20] James: Lacks Front Page View An OK presentation of NYT content, but shortcomings include not including the Front Page as a section (for a given date) plus you can see when an article was last updated, but not when it first appeared/was published. All of this makes it a weak substitute for reading the hard copy paper (which was likely their intent!) |
[2012-08-19] Josh: Not as good as desktop app I'm updating my previous review. Since then, it loads much faster, and the widgets constantly update. Overall, possibly the best news app available. It's not, as NYT doesn't offer live news, and breaking news push updates are rare. But runs smoothly, is laid out nice, and works great. |
[2012-08-19] Andrew: Awful Says i don't have internet coverage though i clearly garbage application. |
[2012-08-18] DK: Ok Has improved over earlier releases. |
[2012-08-18] Kara: Finally, a great app from NY Times If you quit on the NYT Android app a while ago because it used to be abysmal and crash all the time, now is the time to re-download and give it another try. The app is now absolutely great and polished and delightful -- it is actually better than reading the paper on the mobile site! The ONE THING holding this back from being 5 stars is that NY Times HTTP links from the web don't open in the app -- please fix that! |
[2012-08-18] Andrew: Poor Customer Service I am a Times Reader subscriber(the $20/month one), and for the life of me, I have not been able to get a straight answer from NYT's customer service on what level of subscription gives me access to the opinion pages. An app is only as good as its utility, and this app gets a ZERO from me. |
[2012-08-18] Alicia: Great It is good even though I don't live in NYC! |
[2012-08-17] Ken: Why Why would I pay for a subscription when there are so many free news sources. There is absolutely nothing special about the rimes reporting. |
[2012-08-17] Kyle: Free version The free version seems like a good download, until you can only read the first 2 sentences and the headline and then you have to subscribe to read the rest it the articles. There are better free news apps out there that will allow you to read the whole article not just a teaser |
[2012-08-16] billd222: What happened?? I use the ny times app on my iphone and it is great. What happened to the android version??? Font is WAY too small. Unuseable. Fail. |
[2012-08-16] Moochman: Slow I love the content, but the app sucks. I can get the articles way faster from the website. |
[2012-08-15] Craig: Good news OK app Please fix the issue preventing me from posting a comment on my S2 skyrocket |
[2012-08-14] jaaslin: Great work Awesome!!! |
[2012-08-14] Glenn: Temp Problem (?) Had the app (w/print subscription) for about a month. Very good, but app failed to load this morning. Also, didn't receive print edition. Wow, same day. Sort of weird. |
[2012-08-13] Ted: Solid! Enjoyed this app. It compliments the online and iPad app and provides quality info anf multimrdia. |
[2012-08-13] Saladin: Crashes phone |
[2012-08-13] Oran: The 2.0.2 upgrade significantly improved the app. It is still a little slow to load, but entirely manageable, now. Great content! |
[2012-08-11] J~: Lame Pay for every little thing. No thanks |
[2012-08-11] Jason: Can't comment on stories Oh, the capability is there, but your text is one shade of gray darker than the text box - illegible. Otherwise, works fine on Jellybean (Nexus 7). As someone else said, where's search? White text on black? The content, as always, is the best. |
[2012-08-10] Dan: New versions are great The app has gotten much better in the last few versions, now almost perfect and much faster. I'll never complain about a pay wall if they keep delivering the best journalism in the world. |
[2012-08-09] Kevin: Poor, not free, try fox news at least they report real stories |
[2012-08-07] Jonathan: Won't load on Evo after recent update. |
[2012-08-07] Matt: Good app, good content Works well and updates are quick. Would give it 5 stars but it needs search capability. |
[2012-08-06] the 8/6/2012 Lame business model So, I have to put up with ads *and* pay for a subscription to access any content? Seriously? Luckily there are dozens of other news outlets offering free access to the same sensationalistic / biased / pre-digested articles as NYT... |
[2012-08-06] Andy: Ad window freeze Freezing on the ad window |
[2012-08-05] Yogesh: Suck Yaar..... |
[2012-08-05] Darrell: A good app ruined by bloat After logging in, the data usage jumped to 7 megs. There are news apps with more features that don't use that much. |
[2012-08-05] Josh: Annoying ads even for subscribers I just subscribed, hoping that in addition to getting unlimited articles access I would also be able to get rid of the ads. Nope. There's still an obnoxious, invasive, distracting ad at the bottom of every article. If it doesn't get removed within a month I'm canceling my subscription. |
[2012-08-03] Anonymous: . app sucks. mobile web is faster, and there are no ads. UNINSTALLED. |
[2012-08-01] John T: Could be much, much better For an app that displays text and photos, it uses a lot of battery. On some roms, the app hard crashes very consistently. Reading experience is also less than optimal. It would be great to have options to page through articles (instead of scrolling), or to remember what articles have already been read. With that said, please focus on getting the app as solid as paper before adding in less crucial features (like commenting). Subscribers like myself expect it. Thanks! |
[2012-07-30] Heymull: works okay Seems to work okay now on ICS in my Samsung S3. |
[2012-07-29] Himalaya: Slow |
[2012-07-29] Jose A.: José A. "...thanks..." |
[2012-07-26] Brad: Really slow and buggy, going to cancel subscription after $1 promo month if not fixed. |
[2012-07-25] the 7/25/2012 Way better than it used to be Now it doesn't force close, and actually allows me to read articles. Still heavy on battery, but ultimately satisfying. |
[2012-07-24] Vinodh: Works fine on Nexus 7 This app is better than the NY times tablet app on the Nexus 7. |
[2012-07-23] Hank: Generally ok How to change background color? Kindle app has this function. |
[2012-07-22] Peter: Advertisements I pay for this app, don't like to see ads. |
[2012-07-22] Bryan: painfully adapting to the eTimes I am addicted to the paper version of the Times. It usually arrives here by 6am. When it doesn't I'm forced to use this app. It is frustratingly challenging. e.g., the back button sometimes goes back a page, and sometimes it closes the app. But ask the news is here. I find that if I patiently try to adapt to their unusually restrictive flow, I can get most of what i need to know |
[2012-07-22] Sumit: Nice app, needs wifi settings Please add the ability to download new content whenever wifi is available. |
[2012-07-21] Michael: Good back to 5*, quality control has improved |
[2012-07-21] blackcat: A lot of articles are paid content I like reading the NYT but nearly all is paid content now. |
[2012-07-20] aacero: Thinks tablet is a phone??? A disappointed tablet subscriber. |
[2012-07-20] Linda: Gimic Not free ... Only shows story tagline the expects you to subscribe |
[2012-07-19] Ibexking: Latest version is a disaster! The app used to work as stable as any I've seen. With the latest update, sadly this hdas been screwed up. It randomly tries to update articles and pictures and, worst of all, crashes unpredictably and often. HTC desire. I am a subscriber and very disappointmented. |
[2012-07-19] jelpern: Latest upgrade crashes every time. Used to be great. Please fix this NYT! Otherwise I was my subscription refunded. T-Mobile G2. |
[2012-07-19] Mike: Whatever App works for one article and the ashes for money to keep working. What's wrong with charging advertisers like the other news apps. |
[2012-07-19] Kamal: App update? I love the app. Fast and smooth. One question: my app used to stay up to date throughout the day, now I have to refresh all the time. What gives? Thanks for the followup. Much appreciated!! |
[2012-07-18] Jimmy: Have to subscribe Read one article then asked me to subscribe. Nah. |
[2012-07-17] Samir: Developers should be replaced; force closes and causes application space low error. Unacceptable after pay wall. Crashed while writing this review! |
[2012-07-17] Robert: Nightview needed Can we get a black background with white or grey text like the photo section? Also more font size choices are needed. |
[2012-07-17] Colin: Great journalism, good app Functional, good content |
[2012-07-17] Pajarito: Needs JB update Can't select the menu in Jelly Bean, which means I can't type in my account info. Terribly frustrating. |
[2012-07-15] Victor: Adjust fonts? Decent. I still wish the font choices were closer together.......medium is a little too small and large is too big. |
[2012-07-15] Ted: This is great. |
[2012-07-15] Brady: Why does this application run in the background? I'm not running the widget and this application still runs in the background. When you kill the the service it restarts by itself. What a waste of battery. |
[2012-07-15] John F. Helmer: Much improved |
[2012-07-12] Rebecca1313: NYTimes app rocks |
[2012-07-12] EB: Doesn't work with subscription After logging in, it asks me to subscribe and I can't see the articles. Can't use. Incredible. |
[2012-07-11] Mushi: Better.. Latest update very good! |
[2012-07-11] Christian: Can it be any slower??!! Seriously NY Times - you would think by now it wouldn't take 5 mins and freezing up my phone to update the news. Ppl read the nytimes app for content, not pics and pretty fonts! Just simplify it. How come the NY Daily News App works 100 times better? Embarrassing! |
[2012-07-11] Michael: Really? Why can't you search for articles? Absolutely ridiculous that you can't. |
[2012-07-11] Jordan: Used to be better Downloaded most recent update and now the stories never update even when I click the update button |
[2012-07-10] Vincent: This app makes me smarter than a fifth grader. |
[2012-07-09] Evan: Improved - No longer freezes all the time. Fails to update properly on cell network - works in wi-fi. |
[2012-07-09] Mike: Less and less usable in each new release The increase in ad space and constant flashing, plus general sluggishness make for a trying experience. Giving up. |
[2011-06-01] edocktor: App has become *painfully* slow with recent "upgrade." Over 1 minute to load each story. Droid2. |
[2011-06-01] Darren: Works after uninstalling and reinstalling. Droid x |
