This fragment of a novel was written by Jane Austen in 1804 and remained untitled and unpublished until her nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh printed it in his A Memoir of Jane Austen in 1871. The title is named by him.

Mr Watson is a widowed clergyman with two sons and four daughters. The youngest daughter, Emma, has been brought up by a wealthy aunt and is consequently better educated and more refined than her sisters.

But when her aunt contracts a foolish second marriage, Emma is obliged to return to her father’s house. There she is chagrined by the crude and reckless husband-hunting of two of her twenty-something sisters.

Used to a life of ease, warmth and intelligence, Emma is thrust back into a home where, with one exception, her sisters are petty and jealous, if not vulgar, her father is ill and weak, and her brothers are not men of fine minds.

This is a poignant exploration of a young lady's endurance in the face of reduced circumstances, and in true Jane Austen fashion, there is an admirable hero to make all right in the end.

If you are a fan of Jane Austen, you  will definitely find this piece very interesting.

Otto of the Silver Hand is as captivating and beautiful as a knight in shining armor tale can be. It's a tale of love, courage, good and evil.

It is truly a great book to read aloud to children.

Born into a baronial family that is already engaged in a blood feud with another noble house, motherless Otto is sent to live with monks while still an infant.

Reclaimed at age 12 by his loving father, the gentle-natured boy is kidnapped and mutilated by the rival family. Fortunately, Otto finds comfort with his captor's daughter, Pauline, who helps him escape.

His father's courage and cunning allow his safe return to the monks who place him under the emperor's protection. His silver hand is a replacement for the one Otto lost while in captivity, but his injury does not prevent him from maturing wisely and marrying Pauline.

Children and adults will love this wonderful book about honor and virtue in the Middle Ages. This is so beautifully written!

Otto proves that evil begets evil and good begets honor -- and above all that CHARACTER DOES MATTER. The novel, first published in 1888 by one of America's finest authors is inspiring and exciting.

Little Wizard Stories of Oz includes:

Wonderful fun to listen to, and an excellent little resource for storytellers.

The “Little Wizard Stories of Oz” are six short stories written by L. Frank Baum in 1913.

By all accounts, Baum intended to finish the Oz series with “The Emerald City of Oz,” published in 1910. Following that, he attempted to write non-Oz books, publishing “The Sea Fairies” in 1911 and “Sky Island” in 1912.

But, his readers were only interested in hearing more Oz stories. So in 1913, he returned to writing about Oz, putting out The “Little Wizard Stories” that year.

The Little Wizard Stories were geared toward younger children and were originally published separately, “similar in style to today’s Little Golden Books.” The next year, they were published together as one volume.

Each Little Wizard Story revolves around the adventures of two famous Oz characters, and their humorous adventures in and around the land of Oz.

Written in epistolary style, it is the story of Lady Susan, a beautiful, recent widow with no conscience, a woman who is determined to do exactly what she wants to do, to charm and/or seduce any man who appeals to her, and to secure a proper marriage for her teenage daughter, whom she considers both unintelligent and lacking in charm.

Lady Susan, the character, has no redeeming qualities, other than her single-mindedness, and her problems, entirely self-imposed, show the extremes to which an unprincipled woman will go to ensure her own pleasure and ultimately a more secure, comfortable life.

As Lady Susan manipulates men, women, and even her young nieces and nephews, her venality knows no bounds, and when she determines that her daughter Frederica WILL marry Sir James, a man who utterly repulses her, Lady Susan's love of power and her willingness to create whatever "truth" best suits her purpose become obvious.

Most Austen fans will find the piece interesting. Some like the character herself, Lady Susan, because she is a strong character and that is the attraction of the work.

It shows Austen as a more playful novelist than in her other novels, an author who is obviously having fun introducing a wild card like Lady Susan into polite society to show how ill-equipped men are to deal with someone so clever.

Though Lady Susan is considered part of Jane Austen's "juvenilia," having been written ca. 1805, it was not published till well after Jane Austen's death.

A magnificently crafted novel of Regency manners that will delight Austen enthusiasts with its wit and elegant expression.

The "romance novel" of the times! Theo was written and published in 1877. It is a great read for perspective of the courting habits of your grandparents, or great-great-great-great-great grandparents!

Frances Hodgson Burnett is one of the most charming among American writers. There is a crisp and breezy freshness about her delightful novelettes that is rarely found in contemporaneous fiction.

Theo is no exception to that.

If you are a fan of her works such as “A Little Princess”, “Sara Crewe”, “The Shuttle”, etc., you will definitely love this piece.

Frances Hodgson Burnett brings another masterpiece indeed.

Originally written in 1910, in this book, James Allen leads us through the steps necessary to achieve true happiness, allowing us to rise "Above Life's Turmoil" and find the pleasant pastures of peace. This is a wonderfully written book that is a joy to read and one that will have a profound effect on those that allow the truths within to guide them to a better place. It has stood the test of time and is still as relevant as it was when it was first publish 100 years ago.

The turmoil of the world we cannot avoid, but the disturbances of mind we can overcome. The duties and difficulties of life claim our attention, but we can rise above all anxiety concerning them. Surrounded by noise, we can yet have a quiet mind; involved in responsibilities, the heart can be at rest; in the midst of strife, we can know the abiding peace.

This timeless piece will be found to be harmonious in the spirit, in that it points the reader towards those heights of self-knowledge and self-conquest which, rising above the turbulence of the world, lifts their peaks where the Heavenly Silence reigns.

James Allen was one of the World's great new age thinking, though he lived over 100 years ago, his insight into the workings of the mind and the effect of thought on the world we encounter has been an inspiration and motivation for countless writers and commentators for a century.
