King Richard II is a history play by William Shakespeare believed to be written in approximately 1595. It is based on the life of King Richard II of England.

It is the first of the history series, referred to by scholars as the Henriad, followed by three plays concerning Richard's successors: Henry IV (part 1), Henry IV (part 2), and Henry V.

At the start of Richard II, Bolingbroke (King Richard's cousin) accuses and attacks the government of King Richard.

King Richard II then banishes his cousin Henry Bolingbroke from England.

Bolingbroke later returns with an army and the support of some of the nobility, and he deposes Richard. Richard is separated from his beloved Queen, imprisoned, and later murdered. By the end of the play, Bolingbroke has been crowned King Henry IV.

Bolingbroke seems to be a leader coming into power at a time England is in turmoil.

This particular play can be viewed as a turning point in the history of England as the throne is taken over by a more commanding king in comparison to King Richard II.

Shakespeare's genius for verse and the exposition of character is blazingly manifest in this play and that is one of the reasons for its popularity.

Richard II has one of the most detailed and unusual performance histories of all the plays of the Shakespearean canon.

The play was performed two days in a row at the Globe Theatre on June 11 and 12, 1631.

Three witches predict that Macbeth (a general in King Duncan’s army) will become king of Scotland.

When Lady Macbeth persuades her husband to slay King Duncan and seize the throne of Scotland, Macbeth achieves his ambition, but one murder leads to more.

Fired by ambition and goaded by his ruthless wife, he murders Duncan and assumes the throne. More killings follow as Macbeth attempts to retain his crown, until he discovers that prophecies are not always what they seem.

MacBeth is a stark tale of raw ambition, deceit, murder, passion, and madness. We follow the evil hands of MacBeth and Lady MacBeth as they lust for power.

"None of woman born shall harm MacBeth," the deceitful witches tell them, along with a warning to "beware of McDuff." Hearing what they want to hear, MacBeth and Lady MacBeth proceed on a trail of pure evil.

After shedding blood, their assumption of power does not provide the rewards that MacBeth and his Lady expected. Instead they find a dark spiral that descends into fear, guilt, and madness.

Shakespeare apparently penned this classic in the first decade of the 1600's; now some four centuries later it remains a gripping, powerful tale.

Perhaps no other Shakespearean drama so engulfs its readers in the ruinous journey of surrender to evil as does Macbeth. A timeless tragedy about the nature of ambition, conscience, and the human heart, the play holds a profound grip on the Western imagination.

Macbeth is among the best-known of William Shakespeare's plays, and believed to have been written between 1603 and 1606. It is frequently performed at both amateur and professional levels, and has been adapted for opera, film, books, stage and screen.

Guilt, retribution, and self-destiny are explored in one of Shakespeare's crowning achievements.

"The Tempest" tells the story of Prospero, the exiled duke of Milan, and his beautiful daughter, Miranda, who have been stranded for twelve years on a desert island with two servants.

Upon learning that his usurping brother Antonio is sailing near the island with the Neopolitan King Alonso's party, he uses his magic powers to conjure a sea storm that not only leaves the ship and its passengers wrecked on the island, but which also sparks a courtship between his daughter and the king's son, Ferdinand.

The survivors of the wreck are separated into several groups, believing one another dead. Three subplots then alternate through the play.

Prospero works to establish the romantic relationship between Ferdinand and Miranda. In another subplot, Ariel thwarts a murder plot at Prospero's command.

The shipwrecked passengers are eventually reunited by island spirits to discover the marriage of Miranda and Ferdinand.

In the end, as its title suggests, THE TEMPEST is as much about the opening scene's violent storm, as the journey that brought Prospero to the island and the psychological storm--"the sea change"--leading him to leave the remote island to return to Milan.

The Tempest presents some of Shakespeare's most insightful meditations on the cycle of life—ending and beginning, death and regeneration, bondage and freedom.

Shakespeare’s Sonnets, or simply The Sonnets, comprise a collection of 154 poems in sonnet form written by William Shakespeare that deal with such themes as love, beauty, politics, and mortality.

The poems were probably written over a period of several years.

The first 17 sonnets, traditionally called the procreation sonnets, are written to a young man urging him to marry and have children in order to immortalise his beauty by passing it to the next generation.

Other sonnets express the speaker's love for a young man; brood upon loneliness, death, and the transience of life.

The final two sonnets are allegorical treatments of Greek epigrams referring to the "little Love-god" Cupid.

This is a selection of Shakespeare’s poems from The Oxford Book of English Verse: 1250–1900.

William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist.

His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century.

In the twentieth century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance.

His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.

"Much Ado About Nothing" is the story of Leonato, an Italian nobleman, his daughter, Hero, and his niece, Beatrice.

Following the war, Leonato welcomes into his house Don Pedro, his good friend; fellow soldiers of Don Pedro, Claudio and Benedick; as well as Don Pedro's illegitimate brother, Don John.

The dashing young Claudio falls for Hero, the beautiful daughter of Leonato.

Benedick, who insists that he will never get married, soon finds himself constantly quarreling with sharp-tongued Beatrice, Hero's beautiful cousin.

Quickly amorous relations develop between Claudio and Hero and later between Benedick and Beatrice.

As wedding plans are being made for Claudio and Hero, Don John tricks Claudio into believing that Hero has been unfaithful. The wedding bliss is thus interrupted until the truth can be discovered.

Finally a grand masquerade ball provides the setting for an amusing muddle of mistaken identities.

True love triumphs at last for Claudio and Hero and also for Beatrice and Benedick when both couples are united at the end.

"Much Ado About Nothing" touches on romance, humor, comedy, and drama.

A true masterpiece indeed!

"Much Ado About Nothing" is arguably the best comedy play of Shakespeare.

Magic, fairies, young lovers chasing each other through a forest... a man with a donkey’s head... and Puck wrecking havoc right and left...

What’s going on here? It’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare at his most fanciful.

The play opens with Theseus, Duke of Athens, preparing for his wedding. Egeus complains to Theseus that his daughter Hermia refuses to marry Demetrius.

When Hermia is given the choice between marriage to Demetrius or life as a nun, she and her true love Lysander flee into the forest. Demetrius follows them; and Helena, who loves Demetrius, follows him.

Also in the forest are Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies, at odds with one another. At Oberon’s behest, Puck (Oberon's servant) causes Demetrius to fall in love with Helena — oops, he missed, that was Lysander instead.

Mayhem ensues. In the meantime, a group of bumbling craftsmen rehearses a play. Puck gives one of them, Bottom, the head of an ass and makes Titania fall in love with him.

Further hilarity results, as Bottom sees nothing at all odd about this. Eventually everything is straightened out, Bottom and the rest “perform” their play, there is a triple wedding, and Puck assures us the whole thing has been a dream.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" is interesting, lively, and enjoyable.

This is Shakespearean comedy at its best. Wordplay and physical comedy abound, and timeless aspects of human nature are shown at their most sublime and ridiculous.
