King Lear abdicates the British throne, to divide his kingdom among his three daughters in proportion to their professed love of him. His plan misfires when Cordelia, his youngest and favourite daughter, refuses to flatter her father; she is disinherited and banished.

King Lear is widely held as the greatest of Shakespeare’s tragedies; to some, it is the greatest play ever written.

It is believed to have been written between 1603 and 1606. This play was first performed on December 26th 1606.

King Lear descends into madness after wrongly distributing his estate on the strength of flattery. The play is based on the legend of Leir of Britain, a mythological pre-Roman Celtic king.

It has been widely adapted for stage and screen, with the part of Lear played by many of the world's most accomplished actors.

King Lear wants to retire from power. He decides to divide his realm among his three daughters, and offers the largest share to the one who loves him best.

Goneril and Regan both proclaim in fulsome terms that they love him more than anything in the world, which pleases him. Cordelia speaks temperately, honestly but bluntly which annoys him.

In his anger he disinherits her, and divides the kingdom between the other two. Kent objects to this unfair treatment.

King Lear is further enraged by Kent's protests, and banishes him from the country.

Cordelia's two suitors enter into scene. Learning that she is disinherited, the Duke of Burgundy withdraws his suit, but the King of France is impressed by her honesty and marries her anyway.

Since the 19th century, "King Lear" has been regarded as one of Shakespeare's supreme achievements. The play is particularly noted for its probing observations on the nature of human suffering and kinship.

"As You Like It" is Shakespeare's most light-hearted and most performed comedy.

This pastoral delight follows the amorous affairs of the banished Rosalind, who takes refuge in the Forest of Arden disguised as a young man. She falls in love with Orlando, but her disguise complicates matters, especially when Rosalind unwittingly attracts the shepherdess Phebe.

Rosalind then woos Orlando by teaching him to court her.

The story starts off with Duke Frederick, who has banished his brother, Duke Senior, into the Forest of Arden, thereby usurping the kingdom.

In his exile, Duke Senior has found a humble life of merriment with his court. Following a wrestling match, Duke Frederick also banishes Orlando (son of the late Sir Roland de Boys) and Rosalind (daughter of Duke Senior) into the forest.

At the match, the two have fallen into love at first sight.

Soon, Orlando and Rosalind are welcomed into the merry life of banished Duke Senior.

Orlando, however, is lovesick for Rosalind, and Rosalind (still disguised as a boy) decides to cure Orlando of his lovesickness.

While counseling him in the ways of true love, Rosalind finds herself falling deeper in love with Orlando. Meanwhile, Celia has fallen in love with Orlando's brother, Oliver.

The two decide to get married the next day. Even witty Touchstone has fallen in love with a dull-witted goatherd girl, Audrey. In the final scene, and after many hilarious mixups, all romantic entanglements are resolved by marriage; and after a sudden religious conversion, Duke Frederick returns the throne to his brother -thereby righting all wrongs and uniting all couples by love and happiness.

As You Like It is an important work of William Shakespeare, and is highly recommended for fans of his works as well as those discovering his plays for the first time.

The Amateur Emigrant (in full: The Amateur Emigrant from the Clyde to Sandy Hook) is Robert Louis Stevenson's travel memoir of his journey from Scotland to California in 1879-1880.

In July 1879, Robert Louis Stevenson left Scotland to meet his future wife in her native California. Leaving by ship from Glasgow, Scotland, he determined to travel in steerage class to see how the working classes fared.

At the last minute he was convinced by friends to purchase a ticket one grade above the lowest price, for which he was later thankful after seeing the conditions in steerage, but he still lived among the ‘lower’ classes.

Stevenson described the crowded weeks in steerage with the poor and sick, as well as stowaways, and his initial reactions to New York City where he spent a few days. Filled with sharp-eyed observations, it brilliantly conveys Stevenson’s perceptions of America and Americans.

It also provides a very detailed and enjoyable account of what it was like to travel to America as an emigrant in the 19th century, during a time of mass migrations to the New World.

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a novella by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1886.

Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist and travel writer.

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was an immediate success and is one of Stevenson's best-selling works. Stage adaptations began in Boston and London within a year of its publication and it has gone on to inspire scores of major film and stage performances.

London lawyer Utterson is driven to investigate Edward Hyde, the unlikely protégé of his friend Dr Henry Jekyll, suspecting the relationship to be founded on blackmail.

The truth is worse than he could have imagined. Jekyll’s ‘full statement of the case’, the final chapter of the book, explores the idea of dual personality that led him to his experiments, and his inexorable and finally fatal descent into evil.

A Child's Garden of Verses is a collection of poetry for children by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson.

Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (13 November 1850 – 3 December 1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist and travel writer.

A literary celebrity during his lifetime, Stevenson now ranks among the 30 most translated authors in the world, just below Charles Dickens. He has been greatly admired by many authors.

Stevenson recalled this time of sickness in the poem "The Land of Counterpane" in A Child's Garden of Verses (1885) and dedicated the book to his nurse

The collection first appeared in 1885 under the title Penny Whistles, but has been reprinted many times, often in illustrated versions. It contains about 65 poems including the cherished classics "Foreign Children," "The Lamplighter," "The Land of Counterpane," "Bed in Summer," "My Shadow" and "The Swing."

Beloved by many generations of children, A Child’s Garden of Verses is a beautiful collection of children’s poetry. Sometimes thoughtful, sometimes whimsical, but always fun.
