What could be better than an introduction to the theory of relativity by Albert Einstein himself?

Relativity: The Special and General Theory is Einstein's original text, written for the layperson over a century ago.

Special and General relativity explain the structure of space-time and provide a theory of gravitation.

Einstein’s theories shocked the world with their counterintuitive results, including the dissolution of absolute time.

In this book he brings a simplified form of his profound understanding of the subject to the layperson.

In the words of Einstein: “The present book is intended, as far as possible, to give an exact insight into the theory of Relativity to those readers who, from a general scientific and philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics.”

The book is challenging at times but, when approached patiently, proves itself one of the most lucid explanations of Relativity to be found anywhere.

Einstein shattered common-sense notions of space and time with the publication of his special theory of relativity in 1905.

In the general theory of relativity, published in 1916, he extended the special theory to include gravity, supplanting Newton's law of universal gravitation, the zenith of the Scientific Revolution.

In this book, Einstein took his revolutionary theory directly to the people. In simple terms, he carefully laid out the basic concepts of relativity.

But over one hundred years have passed since Einstein penned this classic; many advances have been made in our understanding of relativity and space and time.

100 years after Einstein published his first papers on relativity, this classic account by the man himself is now ready for easy listening of twenty-first century readers.

"All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man's life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual toward freedom." –Albert Einstein

The monster comes out of the darkness, moving in on his victims in deadly silence. When he leaves, a trail of blood is all that remains. He is a monster, Grendel, and all who know of him live in fear.

Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, knows something must be done to stop Grendel. But who will guard the great hall he has built, where so many men have lost their lives to the monster while keeping watch?

Beowulf tells the story of the heroic Beowulf and of his battles, first with the monster Grendel, who has laid waste to the great hall of the Danish king Hrothgar.

He then battles with Grendel's avenging mother, and finally with a dragon that threatens to devastate his homeland.

Through its blend of myth and history, Beowulf vividly evokes a twilight world in which men and supernatural forces live side by side, and celebrates the endurance of the human spirit in a transient world.

Beowulf tells the story of a mysterious young warrior who saves the Spear-Danes from the terrible monster Grendel and his venomous mother. Long a mainstay of English Literature 101 courses at universities around the world, it is not only one of the oldest, but one of the most exciting English folktales ever.

So, listen up. Grendel, Mamma, and Fire-breathing Dragon await...

This is the collection of important documents that made the history of the United States.

Documents included are:

The Articles of Confederation
The U.S. Constitution
The Declaration of Independence
The Gettysburg Address

The Articles of Confederation: On November 15th, 1777 The Articles of Confederation became the first constitution of the United States, though not yet ratified by the thirteen original colonies. Ratification of the Articles took place almost three and a half years later on March 1st, 1781. The purpose of the articles was to create a confederation of sovereign states with a weak central government; thus allowing state governments to wield most of the power. It wasn’t long before the need for a stronger federal government was realized which led to the Articles being replaced by the United States Constitution. The Articles of Confederation is the common term for The Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union.

The U.S. Constitution: The United States Constitution is the legal backbone of the United States of America and comprises the basic laws of the United States Federal Government. Delegates from twelve of the thirteen original colonies put the Constitution’s frame work together in May 1787 in Philadelphia. The Constitution defines the three branches of government and their jurisdictions; they are the Executive Branch (President/Vice President), Legislative Branch (Congress comprised of the Senate & House of Representatives), and the Judicial Branch (the Supreme Court). The need for three branches of government was to create a separation of powers so that not one person or group has full responsibilities, but that they’re spread out and each branch must refer to the other by a means of checks and balances.

The Declaration of Independence: The Declaration of Independence is a document that is the epitome of freedom and liberty. It was drafted by Thomas Jefferson in 1776 as a list of grievances against the King of England, George III. The Declaration expresses the conviction of Americans in a philosophy of self-evident truths of what individual liberty and freedom should be. The Declaration was the beginning to separation from England and the catalyst for a birth of a nation.

The Gettysburg Address: The Gettysburg Address is considered one of the greatest and most quoted speeches of a President throughout American history. President Abraham Lincoln gave his address on the battlefield at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on November 19th, 1863. It was a few months after the battle at Gettysburg was over, the purpose of Lincoln being there was to consecrate a cemetery to the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. It is believed that Lincoln’s main goal of this opportunity was to fight for the United States as a united country and to express the equality of all under the law.

The Pre-Socratic Greek philosophers (the philosopher-scientists who lived before or contemporaneously to Socrates) were the first men in the Western world to establish a line of inquiry regarding the natural phenomena that rejected the traditional religious explanations and searched for rational explanations.

Even though they do not form a school of thought, they can be considered the fathers of philosophy and many other sciences as we have them now.

None of their works is extant, so, in this collection, we present the textual fragments, when existing, of ten Pre-Socratic philosopher-scientists, and quotations and testimonials about them left by later authors.

Philosophers included are:

Anaxagoras of Klazomenai
Anaximander of Miletos
Anaximenes of Miletos
Empedocles of Agrigentum
Heraclitus
Parmenides of Elea
Pythagoras of Samos and the pythagoreans
Thales of Miletos
Xenophanes of Kolophon
Zeno of Elea by Various authors

This wonderful story tells all about the youth, manhood and old age of Santa Claus and how he became immortal.

Orphaned at an infant, Santa Claus is found in the Forest of Burzee by Ak, Master Woodsman of the World, and placed in the care of the lioness, Shiegra.

The Wood Nymph, Necile, breaks the law of the forest and takes the baby because she desires to raise a child of her own as mortals do, convincing Ak that since he made the law, he can allow an exception.

Necile calls him Claus, meaning "little one" in the old Burzee language, but Queen Zurline gives him the more formal name Neclaus, "Necile's Little One".

He is educated by the immortals of the Forest and meets many adventures of his own!

As he grows older, Santa Claus meets his fellow humans, and sees the neglect of children.

This sets him on the path to making toys and becoming the beloved Santa Claus (or Saint Nicholas) we are familiar with today.

L. Frank Baum creates a world of fantasy that surrounds Santa Claus’s life.

L. Frank Baum is a master story teller, and you will be mesmerized by Santa Claus’s story.

This is a story filled with fun for the whole family!

This fragment of a novel was written by Jane Austen in 1804 and remained untitled and unpublished until her nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh printed it in his A Memoir of Jane Austen in 1871. The title is named by him.

Mr Watson is a widowed clergyman with two sons and four daughters. The youngest daughter, Emma, has been brought up by a wealthy aunt and is consequently better educated and more refined than her sisters.

But when her aunt contracts a foolish second marriage, Emma is obliged to return to her father’s house. There she is chagrined by the crude and reckless husband-hunting of two of her twenty-something sisters.

Used to a life of ease, warmth and intelligence, Emma is thrust back into a home where, with one exception, her sisters are petty and jealous, if not vulgar, her father is ill and weak, and her brothers are not men of fine minds.

This is a poignant exploration of a young lady's endurance in the face of reduced circumstances, and in true Jane Austen fashion, there is an admirable hero to make all right in the end.

If you are a fan of Jane Austen, you  will definitely find this piece very interesting.

Charles Darwin Autobiography (v. 1.0)

Naturalist Charles Darwin (1809 -1882) is the father of evolution.

His groundbreaking The Origin of Species argued that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection.

As much as anyone in the modern era, Darwin has changed the course of human thought.

The Autobiography of Charles Darwin, written by Charles Darwin himself is widely considered to be one of the greatest books of all time.

It was published in 1887, five years after Darwin’s death.

Darwin wrote the book, which he entitled Recollections of the Development of My Mind and Character, for his family. He states that he started writing it on about May 28, 1876 and had finished it by August 3.

The book was edited by Charles Darwin’s son Francis Darwin, who removed several passages about Darwin’s critical views of God and Christianity. It was published in London by John Murray as part of The life and letters of Charles Darwin, including an autobiographical chapter.

The omitted passages were later restored by Darwin’s granddaughter Nora Barlow in a 1958 edition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the publication of The Origin.

This edition was published in London by Collins under the title of The Autobiography of Charles Darwin 1809-1882, with the original omissions restored, edited and with appendix and notes.

The book covers a range of issues unknown to those who only got a glimpse of the man Charles Darwin through his Origin of Species book.

The background for the Origin of Species is all there : the influences he got from many people on his very particular way of thinking and of experimenting with things, the relationship he had with some of the greatest men of his time, the love of hunting he later hesitatingly abandoned, the love his sisters devoted to him and the difficult relationship he had with his authoritarian (and rich) father.

Overall, Autobiography of Charles Darwin is a masterpiece indeed.

It is the year 2072, sixty years after the scarlet plague has depopulated the planet.

James Howard Smith is one of the few survivors of the pre-plague era left alive in the San Francisco area, and as he realizes his time grows short, he tries to impart the value of knowledge and wisdom to his grandsons.

Through his narrative, we learn how the plague spread throughout the world and of the struggles of the handful of survivors it left in its wake.

Out of billions, there are now only a few *hundred* people left on the planet - all scattered, all isolated ...all neo-lithic. There were not enough people left with the know-how to restart society.

The cultured, civilized world of mass communication and technology abruptly gave way to a primitive, savage world of cruelty and barbarism.

The survivors and their descendents now live like their stone-age forebears: wearing animal skins, hunting with bows and arrows and believing in superstition.

In describing the plague's onslaught, the old man tells his grandchildren of the chaos and degradation that wiped out civilization. Money became worthless, the streets of burning cities were littered with corpses, animals grew wild as mankind lost his supremacy over nature.

The three boys have a lot of trouble understanding the words "Granser" uses, due to their lack of education. (Even the word "education" is something the boys have never heard of.) Nevertheless, the old man does the best he can, in spite of the children's limited vocabulary.

This could well be the blueprint for life-after-the-apocalypse stories.

It is in fact one of the very first post-apocalyptic plague stories. It set the stage for later versions, such as George R. Stewart's "Earth Abides," Pat Frank's "Alas, Babylon," Nevil Shute's "On the Beach," and of course, Stephen King's "The Stand," amongst others.

Jack London brings you another masterpiece indeed.

Otto of the Silver Hand is as captivating and beautiful as a knight in shining armor tale can be. It's a tale of love, courage, good and evil.

It is truly a great book to read aloud to children.

Born into a baronial family that is already engaged in a blood feud with another noble house, motherless Otto is sent to live with monks while still an infant.

Reclaimed at age 12 by his loving father, the gentle-natured boy is kidnapped and mutilated by the rival family. Fortunately, Otto finds comfort with his captor's daughter, Pauline, who helps him escape.

His father's courage and cunning allow his safe return to the monks who place him under the emperor's protection. His silver hand is a replacement for the one Otto lost while in captivity, but his injury does not prevent him from maturing wisely and marrying Pauline.

Children and adults will love this wonderful book about honor and virtue in the Middle Ages. This is so beautifully written!

Otto proves that evil begets evil and good begets honor -- and above all that CHARACTER DOES MATTER. The novel, first published in 1888 by one of America's finest authors is inspiring and exciting.
