Akimbo Audiobook Player (v. 1.6.2) Разработано Akimbo App |
Akimbo player is the most comprehensive audio book player in the market. It is specifically tailored for audio book formats (M4A, M4B, MP3) and comes equipped with various features such as: identify chapters and covers in all types of books; maintain position and volume per book; partial speed control support (see below); allow numerous ways to change your position (from configurable step button to a “go to any position” dialog), bookmarks and more…
IMPORTANT NOTE: due to the differences in audio capabilities between different Android OS versions and device models, it is recommended you install the trial version before using this application, to ensure that your audio files are playable on your device: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.akimbo.abp.trial
Read the full manual at https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0ByHIlLQe6aBabWRJOVE2MFBDbVE&export=download&hl=en
Notable features:
• Supports all the major audio book and other audio formats: M4A, M4B (including iPod chaptered books), MP4, MP3, ogg vorbis.
• Reads cover images and chapter information from within audio book files.
• Parses WMA and FLAC (actual ability to play depends on your device).
• Maintain your last position and last set volume level for each book.
• Partial play speed control (IMPORTANT: requires purchase of Presto app and is limited to MP3 and OGG formats, will not work on M4B books).
• Allows bookmarks for each book.
• Configurable step buttons for quick shifts forwards or backwards.
• Easy to use “go to” dialog that will take you instantly to any chapter or position throughout the book.
• Home Screen Widget.
• Allows a one-click automatic download of covers for any book, or for your entire library at once.
• A configurable “lock” mode, which prevents accidental changes of position during play.
• Sleep Timer, pausing play after a specified time.
• Loads your entire library at once: offers a one-click scan of any folder tree on your device.
• The player screen offers a host of accessibility and experience improving features, including large-font and human voice indication (and approval) for your actions.
• Allows undoing and redoing any accidental change in position while listening.
For easy listening to your audiobook without looking at the screen (while engaged in some other action or for the visually impaired) it offers a range of accessibility features (including human voice indications) as well as an option to lock the player against accidental changes.
The player is highly recommended not just for audiobooks, but for any episodic format, such as music albums or podcasts.
A note on permissions:
• Internet access is only done at your express request to download covers (it is never launched without a user pressing the download cover button). No personal information is ever sent outside your phone.
• Access to your phone’s state is required to pause the player when a call comes in. No other use of this permission is made.
• Writing to the external storage is required if you choose to save the app’s data (library, images, etc.) on the SD card, instead of the device’s internal storage. No other use of this permission is made.
• Battery status and wake lock permissions are used to prevent locking the device (when configured by the user) when playing or when playing while connected to a power source.

[2013-02-04] A Google User: Excellent piece of software Great thanks to the developer, really useful and well thought out piece of software. |
[2013-01-26] A Google User: Best audiobook app, hands down. I've been using this app everyday for over a year. Works perfectly. Only wish it had a larger home screen widget that showed the book art. No other app comes close to this one. |
[2013-01-25] A Google User: Fantastic. Glad I found this app! So many to sift through. It plays .m4b files wonderfully onmy HTC One X. So glad I have experienced and tried the new and best format. Mp3, why would you? The file handling and playlist will become second nature, although I just uninstalled it then reinstalled to clean out my file list after I deleted an entire audio book off my phone..do I need to read the instructions now?? |
[2013-01-04] A Google User: Awesome! This is the best audiobook player in the market to date. |
[2012-12-26] A Google User: Superb audiobook app! Perfect for m4b files! Can't recommend it enough. |
[2012-12-19] A Google User: Best podcast/audiobook player on the market Switched to this after the Google play music player kept losing my place occasionally when I closed down the app. For music that's no big deal, but when you are 5-7 hours into a single track mp3 and you don't stop to remember the hour and minute you listened to last it matters. This player is fantastic. Never once have I lost my place in the last month. For that alone it gets 5 stars and my money. |
[2012-12-13] A Google User: Great app! Great app would definitely recommend must have app. |
[2012-12-12] A Google User: Works great Does everything you could need for audio books regardless of format. Only thing missing is lock screen and notification integration. |
[2012-12-10] A Google User: Razr and nexus 7 Smart audio book I paid for this, i have been using smart audio book. I recommend you dont buy an app, when there is a free app that is not as sexy, but works a hell of a lot better. |
[2012-12-10] A Google User: My fav My fav app for audio books. Good user interface and plenty of options. |
[2012-12-05] A Google User: Terrible interface.. I spent too long trying to figure out how this app works. When I did, I realised it was pretty rubbish! I think the author should look up the definition of a play list. I would assume items in a play list should play in the order they are placed. In fact just one file plays then it stops altogether! Not so handy when you have a 100 MP3 audio book! |
[2012-11-29] A Google User: Works great, with a single flaw LOVE this app, works great. Every once in a while, it will lose my book, but all I need to do is redirect it back and it even remembers my place. Minor inconvenience. |
[2012-11-20] A Google User: Excellent m4b player After trying a few players and their widgets and finding them so slow to start playing for some reason I tried this and it works great. I guess the interface could have a bit of a tidy up but don't let that put you of this excellent player. |
[2012-11-07] A Google User: Just great!!! Use it for learning languages :) |
[2012-10-29] A Google User: It works great But could u make the ui like the ipod touch or SIII music player. The whole akimbo player just looks a little boring. Issues with the seep timer too, it works sometimes. |
[2012-10-25] A Google User: Found what I want at last I looked at nearly all the audiobook players. None of them did what I wanted. Then found Akimbo. Now i'm very happy. |
[2012-10-21] A Google User: Great App This is by far my most used app, I have kept it through 3 smart phones! It is amazing if you listen to as many audio books as I do. Best features, setting a bookmark then the sleep timer makes it so easy to find my place in the morning! Support is top notch as well! |
[2012-10-14] A Google User: atrix 2 & transformer awesome book reader...with the addition of the paid app presto variable speed works great up to 2x ..... I listen with 1.6x with no issue...well worth the money for both apps |
[2012-10-14] A Google User: New update broke something With new update -1 min and +10 sec buttons as well as backwards slider on top don't work. Fix this and it will be a 5 |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: Perfect Never had a problem. And easy to use :-) |
[2012-10-13] A Google User: Fantastic audiobook player Awesome audibook player - loving it more every day. |
[2012-10-08] A Google User: Pretty good. Interruptions need work It works excellent. However phone calls seem to confuse it. On ICH and it lowers volume to mute on resume. I hate having to futz with it to resume my book while driving. Luckily it has a nice 1min and 10sec rewind when i get it back. |
[2012-10-08] A Google User: Perfect for Audiobooks and Lectures + support I tried all the decent looking audiobook players on the Google Play store. This one is the best. The key features for me: 1.) organizes multi-file (chaptered) lectures in a perfectly convenient non-messy way 2.) resume playback 3.) love the reverse 10 sec / 1 min options 4.) Quick email support 5.) Doesn't use the system's media routine to auto-populate the library. I choose which media subfolders I want in the app. Thanks! |
[2012-10-05] A Google User: Doesn't show bookmarks in my m4bs which makes it just like any other player, except this is expensive rubbish. |
[2012-10-05] A Google User: Good but.... ...one of the last updates messed things up. Now when it gets to the end of the chapter, it will skip ahead 2 more chapters. Very annoying.... Because you have to now pay attention towards the end of any chapter, to make sure that it doesn't skip a chapter. I have tried reinstalling, but still have the same problem. This definitely needs to be fixed. Without this, it would be 5 stars for sure! Samsung galaxy 3 |
[2012-09-26] A Google User: Sluggish, ugly UI Only player I found that properly plays various audio book formats. Unfortunately the user interface is horribly slow and thumbnails of covers are unrecognizably tiny in list views. There is also no option to display file names in listings instead of or along with info from tags. App UI needs an overhaul please. |
[2012-09-24] A Google User: Error I delete folders as I've read them to save space but every time I do, the program looses the book info and although it shows the books it won't play them so I have to uninstall and re-install program. Until that is fixed I'll go back to Mort audiobook player. |
[2012-09-24] A Google User: Galaxy s3 Great app. But needs support for pause / play via headphones. |
[2012-09-18] A Google User: No headphone support??? Is it me or can you not pause this software from your headphones? Other than that obvious issue, the fact that it supports chapters is why Im keeping it. I did check, and it appears to have settings for the headphones, they just done work. |
[2012-09-13] A Google User: Simply the best I only wish audible would hire these guys to build their player (or just give akimbo access to DRM files) |
[2012-09-12] A Google User: Good ! |
[2012-09-05] A Google User: Terrible file system interface Player works great but it has a terrible file system interface. Decided to uninstall and installed Smart Audiobook Player. |
[2012-09-03] A Google User: Excellent app Amazing app for the price. Better than audible's app. I do not listen to music anymore. I only listen to audio books and this app is the best. |
[2012-09-03] A Google User: Manual navigation between chapters? Adding a "book" does not seem to be an option. I follow directions to add the folder containing 79 chapters of a book, but Akimbo adds 79 separate entries. Am I supposed to stop and manually select the next chapter from the library? !! Maybe I'm missing something, but there does not seem to be an option to control this. Manual says something about "You can control merging options in the Settings Screen (Library Tab)". However, the library screen menu does not have a settings entry (Yes, I have the paid version.) |
[2012-08-23] A Google User: Poor android port of iPhone app This is a very poor Android port of an iPhone app. Does not use any Android UI features and is riddled with bugs. On a Galaxy Nexus the following is broken: The following three major bugs made me uninstall the applications: 1 - iPhone sliders are tiny on the screen. These should be Android sliders. 2 - speed reading not working. This is what I purchased it for. 3 - app stops playing after external audio at at times. Sometimes it does not rewind a bit either. What it needs: 1 - proper android implementation. The iphone gui items make it look like a cheap port. 2 - fixing of bug above 3 - bigger icons of books or variable size 4 - listing by directory structure option Unfortunately, It took me 17 minutes to realize this app is very lacking. After two days of use, I went back and purchased Smart AudioBook Player in pure frustration. I would like my money back, this was a terrible purchase. |
[2012-08-17] A Google User: This is great Just what I was looking for...bookmarks and easy to use |
[2012-07-23] A Google User: The best audio book player. Great app for listening to audiobooks. If I had to change anything it would be to make the assignment of art work easier. |
[2012-07-19] A Google User: Best in class It has every feature I could ask for. |
[2012-07-13] A Google User: awesome |
[2012-07-12] A Google User: Great except for a few features I love the user interface and the ability to customize it. However, I'm having a problem with the sleep timer. The "end of chapter" feature only works sometimes. It often goes many chapters farther and makes finding my place difficult after falling asleep. Sometimes the timed sleep timer won't work either, and I'll wake up hours later with it still playing. I like being able to label my bookmarks - great new feature. Something else that would be nice is variable playback speed. Other than that, great app. |
[2012-07-12] A Google User: Pretty Good but expect a little more First off this is the only audiobook player that actually works properly with headset controls both bluetooth and plug. This is a very nice audio book player but the quality of the widget and the UI should be a little more polished considering it's a paid app. |
[2012-07-12] A Google User: Never downloaded |
[2012-07-05] A Google User: Need Very good app. But now we need high resolution interface for new big screens. |
[2012-06-29] A Google User: Brilliant but flawed The sleep timer doesn't work but other than that it's good |
[2012-06-23] A Google User: Bionic Been using Akimbo since OG Droid and it simply does everything I need with a broad range of options, yet a simple, stable interface. |
[2012-06-20] A Google User: Worth every cent! I love this app & use it frequently. No complaints whatsoever. :-) |
[2012-06-18] A Google User: Very good I tried all the other audiobook players but none seem to read the cover art embedded inside .m4b files. Only Akimbo does. However the interface could be improved , like for instance ipod style cover art flow , more themes and color schemes etc. |
[2012-06-13] A Google User: Great Sometimes will lose place or skip in weird parts but that might be the files I'm playing, but this is very rare. Overall fantastic performance and features |
[2012-06-10] A Google User: Just what I was looking for This app was and is worth every cent! I was having trouble with the other audiobook readers failing to organise my files properly into books. this one does that very well, and much more. It also seems to have the most thoughtful layout. |
[2012-05-25] A Google User: Excellent! Has everything I need to listen to audiobooks and is customizable. |
[2012-05-17] A Google User: Not bad. Not bad but getting left behind. I agree with some of the other - comments. UI is overwhelmingly fussy. |
[2012-05-13] A Google User: Skipping forward and back doesn't work When I skip forward or back using the minute or 10 second tool doesn't work... |
[2012-05-10] A Google User: Forgets Last Position I like the app's features for loading audio books and downloading covers. However, it very often forgets where I last left off from a previous session. It does keep my bookmarks so as long as I remember to set a bookmark before I close the application I can return to the my previous position but this is not ideal. |
[2012-05-09] A Google User: Hands down the best Well worth the $2.50 to have the best audiobook player on Android. Wish it had a nice 4x2 widget and a new high resolution icon. |
[2012-04-14] A Google User: Great Super app for listening to books. Love it. |
[2012-04-14] A Google User: Works perfectly On my HTC Desire |
[2012-04-13] A Google User: The best I found ina long search Has everything I need to listen to my audiobooks, including great bluetooth support also under ICS. Excellent user interface, logical, unclattered. Variable playback speed with the optional Presto library download from the Market. |
[2012-04-05] A Google User: Needs Android 4 lock screen support Mort player has support for native ICS lock screen controls, going back to that. |
[2012-04-04] A Google User: Excellance Achieved! Best audiobook player hands down! Very stable on my EVO Design. |
[2012-04-02] A Google User: Best audio book app on the market No other app compares when it comes to audio books on the market. |
[2012-03-31] A Google User: Stole the thunder from Astro. Throughout the past year, the once great audiobook player Astro has become a bloated mess. What I found as a replacement was something even better. This player knows exactly what it is, and presents itself in a very pleasing way. While currently great, I can't wait to see where the updates take this app. |
[2012-03-26] A Google User: Great Audiobook Player, and Responsive Developer I came from an iPhone and needed an audiobook player with variable speed. After trying them all out this with Presto installed was the best. I was having a problem with my phone not going to sleep upon pausing and the 2 developers got together to fix it - very responsive! Upgrade your version if you have an issue. I realize every android device can be different but I haven't had any of the problems mentioned in some of the other reviews, for example I can change my variable speed inside a book just fine. Also works well with Klipsch Headphone Control (which you can use with other headphones.) So far my favorite app for my phone. |
[2012-03-25] A Google User: Massive battery drain, Apart from that, great app |
[2012-03-24] A Google User: Does not play iTunes .m4b files I had hoped it would play my iTunes audio books but it does not. Needs a tablet interface. Looks pretty funky on a tablet. |
[2012-03-18] A Google User: Love it I've switched from mort and this is excellent, only one major gripe is the speed control, it won't allow changes to the current book so if yo don't like the speed your stuck until you load another book |
[2012-03-14] A Google User: Limited to 10 bookmarks It works but I cantbelieve it has a limit on bookmarks. And you can't label them |
[2012-03-12] A Google User: Exceptionally good software This is a class A android app. I am so glad I found it. It did a masterful job at playing my m4b audio book files. |
[2012-03-09] A Google User: Reloads entire library EVERY TIME I got an error notification that Akimbo crashed when launching and therefore would be loading my library anew every time I open it. So, every time I want to listen to a book, I need to reload my library for 45 minutes. Nope. |
[2012-03-08] A Google User: Best player there is Not tested with mp3 yet |
[2012-03-07] A Google User: Having problems doing anything with this app. All i seem to have is the template ... and thats about it. very annoying!! |
[2012-03-02] A Google User: Beautiful Player ! Excellent audio books player, both in terms of features and look. Criticism: unlike competitors, such as Mort, Akimbo has trouble reading and displaying the Chapter ID3 tag of both mp3 and m4a files. |
[2012-03-01] A Google User: Great - only a few flaws I've been trying to re-create my iPhone/iPod experience listening to audiobooks/podcasts, and this app has come close. The main two flaws are: 1. The widget only has one customizable button, which makes it harder to skip around a podcast. (Note that you can put the widget on your Lock Screen through Widget Locker). It also lacks a progress bar. 2. It took me a while to get my headphones button to play/pause - it needs to be enabled in the settings along with "headset hook," unless you use an app to define button presses (e.g. JAYS Headset Control) in which case "headset hook" should be disabled. For full functionality, you'll have to pay another $5 for the Presto app to speed up playback, but this was fully disclosed. Overall, I like this app more than DoggCatcher/BeyondPod for manually-downloaded podcasts, and it's definitely the best app I've seen for audiobooks if you must have speed control. |
[2012-02-26] A Google User: Great App Best player for chaptered podcasts! |
[2012-02-25] A Google User: Excellent Audio book Player Very user friendly. Improvements: 1. It would be nice to have a variable playback speed built into the player. I had to purchase a separate app to do this. 2. When audio books are broken into parts in one folder it should read/play them as one file. |
[2012-02-22] A Google User: Great! This is the best app around. Id love speed button on the main screen. But all round defo a five star experience. Worth every penny |
[2012-02-21] A Google User: Fantastic app and an incredibly responsive developer that took my suggestions to heart and updated the software accordingly. Love it! (HTC desire). |
[2012-02-18] A Google User: Useless and broken. Crap Galaxy skyrocket. Apparently can't find books. Freezes and wont open libraries. Little to no support. |
[2012-02-18] A Google User: Bullshit with galaxy nexus Great functionality overall, but just crap with a galaxy nexus. You cannot set it as default player and therefore not control it with your headphones. So in fact the whole app becomes useless when you would like to use it via Bluetooth in your car etc. Even when setting things correctly in the settings menu. External programs such as jay etc will not fix this issue as well. Do not buy or use with a galaxu nexus! |
[2012-02-09] A Google User: Great work! Best app for mp4b files. A bit to get used to the settings and all the features...but that's what tech junkies like any way, right? You guys are doing great work. |
[2012-02-03] A Google User: Great but... After a reset I found that I could not download Akimbo - all other apps downloaded fine. Couple of days later - all good! |
[2012-02-02] A Google User: Registered user starting to have issues. Several books into the app and at first it was awesome. I loaded up a mp3 book last night and the app swears there are no files in the book folder. Funny thing is my other apps and 2 book players I downloaded have no issues with it, only Akimbo pukes on itself when I try to play the book. And here is the real problem the vendor has no web presence, no FAQ, no ability self help troubleshoot an issue beyond emailing the vendor and waiting for an answer. |
[2012-01-30] A Google User: Incredible I don't normally go for anything with less than 100k downloads especially if its a Paid app, and I usually don't bother leaving a rating but this is one top-notch app. Excellent work dev. |
[2012-01-28] A Google User: Awesome, just buy it So many great features, realky great interface and tons of options under the hood. Awesome, just buy it |
[2012-01-12] A Google User: Fine app. But was really dissapointed to find out I have to pay over 4 bucks for another app to use the variable speed function. Not happy. |
[2012-01-09] A Google User: Somewhat buggy Presto integration and narration speed feature is very buggy, that is why I bought this. Hopefully you can fix it in an update. |
[2012-01-03] A Google User: Good App for Audio Books Good app for audio books. I'm happy. Running perfectly so far on my Galaxy S 2 I9100 (european unlocked version with home button) |
[2011-12-28] A Google User: Best audiobook player A++ |
[2011-12-28] A Google User: Supports m4b chapters, But some fonts are too small to read on galaxy nexus |
[2011-12-27] A Google User: Excellent! Great player, good features. |
[2011-12-21] A Google User: Best. Exactly what I was looking for in an audio book player. Prefect. |
[2011-12-03] A Google User: Good app with some room to improve Speed control doesn't work at all for me, something very useful for audio books. |
[2011-12-03] A Google User: . Best audiobook app I have tried. |
[2011-11-28] A Google User: Works great only one problem This app works great and I would give it five stars but the widget sucks. The white I find annoying on the screen especially since android has moved away from white to black as a theme. But the app itself is works great. |
[2011-11-26] A Google User: Needs built in speed control I would give it a 5 if it had built in speed control. That is a big must for me. Especially since I paid for this app. |
[2011-11-23] A Google User: Perfect! This app (plus presto) is everything I could have asked for in an audiobook player. Thank you! |
[2011-11-18] A Google User: Great This now seems to be the ultimate audio book player! Works flawlessly now for me. |
[2011-11-17] A Google User: Works for me Love the ability to jump back by tapping the artwork. Also nice that it always remember where you were in the audiobook. |
[2011-11-15] A Google User: Great audio player! Work very well! HTC Hero. |
[2011-11-08] A Google User: Horay! Works great! -droidx |
[2011-10-31] A Google User: All support I need for M4b thank you! |
