中国音乐金钟奖流行音乐大赛由中共中央宣传部批准设立的、全国唯一常设的音乐综合性大奖“中国音乐金钟奖”表演奖的分项赛事。大赛的举办旨在促进我国流行音乐事业与产业的发展，促进流行音乐人才的成长，提升音乐人国际化水平，通过比赛的方式，遴选出优秀的青年演唱人才，进行表彰和奖掖，为选拔人才、鼓励原创、原唱，促进流行乐坛繁荣发展创造良好平台。

第八届中国音乐金钟奖流行音乐大赛(以下简称“金钟大赛”)由中国文学艺术界联合会、中国音乐家协会、中共深圳市委宣传部共同主办;深圳广播电影电视集团、中国音乐家协会流行音乐学会共同承办。共设置北京、上海、深圳、成都、西安、沈阳、武汉、石家庄、台北、港澳等10个地面分赛区，同时设置网络赛区。

“金钟大赛”分男子组、女子组、组合组(不得超过八人)三个组别并行展开：

1)分赛区角逐出100强选手;(含40男，40女，20组合);

2) 网络赛区角逐出10强选手;(含4男，4女，2组合);

3)总复赛角逐出全国50强选手;(含20男，20女，10组合);

4)总决赛角逐出各组别金、银、铜奖。组委会根据评奖情况设评委会大奖、媒体关注、最佳原创、最具人气等单项奖若干名。

“金钟大赛”于2011年3月31日全面启动，同期展开报名工作。5至6月举办分赛区赛事，7至8月举办深圳总决赛及颁奖典礼，9-12月执行金钟演唱会等后续活动。大赛采取与强势媒体联合举办的方式，整体赛事节目由深圳卫视全程播放，并配套“青春闪耀世界”万名大学生沙滩音乐节、系列演唱会、展览、论坛等活动，努力将金钟奖流行音乐大赛打造成为全国最具影响力的、最具权威性的流行音乐赛事品牌。
