In the Shadow of the Mahatma, much more than a compilation of correspondence the author had with Mahatma Gandhi is a penetrating chronicle of the events, intrigues and turbulence that went into India’s freedom struggle, culminating in independence.

The author writes an elaborate commentary on the efforts that went, not only towards achieving self-rule, but also towards social change, mass education, rural reform, the battle against caste discrimination and the building up of an indigenous class of civil servants capable of efficiently governing the country after the departure of the colonists.



Throughout the narrative spanning thirty-eight years, the guiding force for GD Babu was the Mahatma. As such, the central theme of the book is the interaction between these two, but GD Babu fills in the background with all the developments that were taking place at several levels throughout the period, as relevant to the freedom struggle led by the Mahatma.

The Green Manifesto

This book is based on a true story of the transformation of a village in a remote part of India.

It describes the efforts of a young boy, wise for his years, to help turn the badly polluted village and its surroundings into a green heaven that it once was. The story tells us that we have the solutions at hand, but they need to be identified.

It is commonly thought that pollution is restricted to the cities, with their large vehicle population and a high degree of consumption of resources. The picture is however changing rapidly.

Environmental degradation has become a major problem in rural areas too. Of course, the causes of pollution there are quite different. Cutting of trees for firewood, indiscriminate grazing of an increasing animal population and a general public apathy towards cleanliness of the surroundings are the main contributing factors.

This book describes the remedial measures undertaken by the villages under the guidance of an enlightened lad, leading to a vast improvement in a couple of years.
