Hunger (A Novel)

Amritlal Nagar, considered the doyen among Hindi novelists today, wrote Bhookh (Hunger) way back in 1946, provoked by the war-time famine in pre-partition Bengal. Since then, it has been hailed by readers and critics alike as a modern classic of Hindi literature.

The novel is centered round Panchu Gopal Mukherjee, the headmaster of a village school, which he himself had built and maintained. It is through the eyes, feelings, thoughts and memories of Mukherjee that the horrors of the great famine are delineated. The village is getting slowly deserted with the living skeletons slowly migrating in all directions and slowly dying on the roadside. Hunger is ravishing the land with predatory birds and animals gorging on dead bodies. Yet the local Zamindar and the leading trader are least affected. In fact, they are thriving, helping the war effort and cooperating with local authorities.

Mukherjee himself is reduced to penury, wondering whether to sell off the few ornaments left in the house or the furniture of his beloved school. He sees all round unbearable sights- his brother misbehaving with his own wife, the carpenter-s widow selling her body, the zamindar reveling in drinks, a food riot being quenched by the police, the trader arranging a feast for Brahmins to wipe out his sins and the hungry fighting with dogs and scraping the food from the discarded banana leaves. The novel, yet ends with hope, when Mukherjee picks up a newly-delivered child, whose mother has fallen dead and the life force had ejected the child out of the womb. He wrenches the umbilical card and takes the child home, where his family members are dead or dispersed. Only his starving wide-eyed wife Mangala is there intrigued but happy by the new arrival.

Keshav Malik has published eight volumes of poetry, one of prose, and edited five anthologies of poetry in translation from Indian languages into English. His own poems have been widely translated into several Indian and foreign languages.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree, Malik studied art history in Italy and France on cultural scholarships for several years. On his return home to India he edited Thought a weekly, Indian Literature, a bi-monthly, and Art & Poetry, a quarterly. He now edits the poetry bulletin of the Poetry Society (India), and is also the art reviewer of a leading newspaper - The Times of India, New Delhi.

In 1961, when Keshav Malik's first volume was published, V.S. Pritchett, the doyen of literary critics, writing about his poems in London's New Statesman said: 'Each one crisp as a thermometer reading.' 'Definite contribution to a new intellectual frontier' was how the Bombay quarterly Quest described Malik's art. His successive volumes of poems have confirmed the power and profundity of his poetic vision. This new volume shows him to be a man who has terrible and touching things that have to be said, and an unmistakable voice in which to say them. The book testifies to the increasing maturity of his poetry. Certainly, he is among the most memorable poets now writing in the English language.

Faiz Ahmed Faiz (1911-1984) was one of the leading, if not the foremost, poet of the Indian sub-continent during the greater part of the last century. Listed four times for the Nobel Prize of Poetry, he was often compared to his friend Pablo Neruda, revolutionary poet and Nobel Prize winner, of Chile. Of Faiz's multifaceted personality, which led him to become, amongst other things, an activist for human rights and liberties, a famous journalist and editor of literary magazines (Urdu & others), trade unionist, and film song writer, it is his poetry which will, no doubt, best survive the test of time. His very first volume of poetry, published in 1941 from Lucknow, brought him instant celebrity. "Naqshe-Faryadi" or "Imprints" has since haunted more than one generation of Urdu lovers. Its combination of classical and elegant Indo-Persian diction with modern sentiment and sensibility still touches the heart of the reader. Apart from inventing the modern Urdu love poem, Faiz revolutionised the classical form of Urdu poetry, the Ghazal, giving it a powerful socio-political resonance. He used ancient forms of poetry, such as the Qawwali and the Geet, to convey his message of humanism without reference to caste, colour or creed. He suffered prison and exile for this in his homeland of Pakistan, where he was, for long years, denied access to the media. The musicality of his verse has continued to haunt many a younger poet, even though it is difficult to attain his unforgettable summits.

The chronological presentation, herein, of 60 poems, 10 quatrains and no less than 30 ghazals, some never translated into English before, will enable the reader to follow the development of the young and romantic poet into the foremost leader of the literary opposition to those who trample on human right, and the defender of the lowly and the mute. A transcription into Roman script (with a glossary in Roman) has been added for those who can understand, but may not be able to read, Urdu.
