§ About the project
In 2007, a community plan based on the community’s aspirations for the City was developed. Four years on, the City is growing and changing, and it’s time to revisit and revise that plan.
Imagine Tomorrow is exactly that. What do you want our City to look like in the future? What do you love about the City and what needs improvement? The views and comments obtained from residents through the project will help us review the community plan, and guide a review of the City’s Development Plan. The information will also help set Council’s priorities for the next four years and beyond.
§ City Profile & Outlook
The City of Charles Sturt borders North Adelaide to the east, the City of West Torrens to the south, Port Adelaide to the north-west and meets the sea in the west.
The current population of Charles Sturt is just under 107,000 and like many urban areas in Australia, is set to grow. Population forecasts suggest that the City’s population may reach 126,000 by 2026 and 150,000 by 2036.
Housing in the City ranges from character to contemporary. Of the City’s approximately 42,000 homes, around 4,000 are located in Residential Character Zones and Historic Conservation areas.
A high proportion of the City’s residents are older adults (over 65) and nearly a third of the City’s households are single person households. Both of these trends are set to continue. The City is also culturally diverse, with almost a quarter of the population born overseas.
Traditionally, manufacturing has been the key driver of the local economy however this sector has been in decline for some time. Current key local economic drivers are wholesale trade and health care.
In planning for the future, Charles Sturt needs to consider a number of State Government initiatives including The 30 Year Plan for Greater Adelaide that proposes a series of sites (growth precincts) adjacent rail corridors for the establishment of medium density neighbourhoods.
