An alarm clock shouldn't shell-shock you out of your dreams. That's why I created Gentle Alarm which tries to wake you up during light sleep using an optional pre-alarm.
Alarm clocks can't know if you are in light sleep or deep sleep (those movement based alarm clock don't work) but they can play a very quiet pre-alarm which you will only hear if you are in light sleep. If you are in deep sleep, you will simply sleep through the pre-alarm.
The pre-alarm plays 30min before you really want to get up (you can change that). If the pre-alarm wakes you up, you will be more refreshed than if you had slept until the main alarm because at that time you would have fallen back into deep sleep. Give it a try and I am sure you won't want to miss it anymore.
Of course, the app has all the usual features of a great alarm clock:
It can switch to a night display automatically when docking the phone. It can automatically shorten the snooze time with each time you press snooze. It can automatically create playlists of your favorite artist or genre. And it allows you to change colors, fonts, and backgrounds.
PERMISSIONS:
* RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED: So it can activate an alarm after you reboot the phone. After reboot, all alarms of all apps are cancelled by default.
* WAKE_LOCK: So the phone can stay on while playing an alarm or while displaying the night display.
* DISABLE_KEYGUARD: When the alarm rings, you don't have to unlock the phone to be able to turn the alarm off.
* VIBRATE: obvious
* WRITE_SETTINGS: It adjusts some system settings such as airplane mode, silent mode, etc.
* WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: It logs some data on your SD card.
* READ_PHONE_STATE: So it can turn off the alarm when the phone rings and prevent an alarm from ringing while you are talking on the phone.
* READ_LOGS: So you can send me debug data (if you choose to)
* INTERNET: So that I can display ads (trial version only). Also, if the app crashes, it offers to send me a debug report directly to my servers. The app will politely ask you if you want to send that data or not. If you do, it needs an internet connection. If not, it doesn't but I still need the permission in the app because you may want to send the debug data.

[2013-11-08] A Google User: Best alarm clock |
[2013-11-06] A Google User: Please update for android 4.4 I have used the app for a long time but since using it on my nexus 5 it has not worked properly and caused the phone to crash at times. Please update. |
[2013-11-02] A Google User: Works really well Yeah. Like others, I'm really surprised about how well the gentle wake up feature works. I am less grumpy in the morning and that says a lot. Worth the few dollars. |
[2013-11-02] A Google User: Great Clock. Thanks for making my morning's better. I bought this app mostly as a timer. But one day I used the fade in feature to wake me in the morning. I generally hate alarm clocks as blasting me out of a fine slumber always ruins my day. But the gentle alarm is different. Its hard to describe how it works. It's more like a trickle of sound starts to wake you up. You begin to hear something far away from you and your not sure what it is but as you become more aware you realize its your alarm. And then your awake! Highly recommended. Great product. Thx. |
[2013-11-01] A Google User: Doesn't work all the time Sometimes it plays the song I selected for the alarm, sometimes it uses a harsh alarm sound, and other times it makes no noise at all. It is not reliable. Uninstalled. |
[2013-10-20] A Google User: Works well Good app, I use it to wake me gently in the mornings and also use the Night Mode to stop notifications from waking me up while I'm asleep. I wish there was a way to make a shortcut to jump directly to Night Mode though, e.g. using QuickShortcutMaker. |
[2013-10-18] A Google User: Great! Great way to wake up in the morning! I like that there are so many justifications you can do to personalise it. I always wake up to the rowing boat :-) |
[2013-10-16] A Google User: Most useful I have Without a doubt the most useful app that I have. Multiple alarms at regular intervals with different tones and fade ins. I would forget so much without this app. Easily worth $10 to $20. Can't recall what I paid for it, but I love it. Many features I haven't even thought of using yet. |
[2013-10-10] A Google User: Excellent I recommend trying out the Pre-Alarm feature if you want to wake up feeling more rested and less irritable. If configured to your sleep style, it helps prevent an abrasive wake-up during an REM phase of your sleep cycle. |
[2013-10-09] A Google User: Works great every time. a little obscure or complicated in a few ways but once you get it,very custom, very reliable |
[2013-10-09] A Google User: A pleasure waking up! It was a joy waking up with Gentle Alarm. The pre alarm is great, I feel less tired having woken up slowly. A great app, although the UI could use a major overhaul. |
[2013-10-09] A Google User: Great app Used the pre alarm - I feel rested and I'm liking it so far. Will try using it with sleep bot - looking forward to testing this out more. |
[2013-10-07] A Google User: Very effective. I have been using this app as my alarm for years now. The gentle awakening is life altering. |
[2013-10-05] A Google User: Good |
[2013-09-30] A Google User: Perfect! After trying a couple a disappointing alarm apps, I finally found the perfect one. Highly customisable, Gentle Alarm makes the start of your day a pleasure. 5 stars. |
[2013-09-30] A Google User: Missed an Alarm? What? The only problem I found with his alarm is, it will shut it OFF of after 60 minutes. that's not going to fly with me. This alarms go off until the user shuts it off. I work long hours, and I sleep very deep after working these long hours. I need something that's not going to auto shut off after 60 minutes. It can't be that hard to put an option of "Never" under 60. 1 star rating until this is fixed. |
[2013-09-27] A Google User: Needs updates to UI Love it, but update the user interface.... Please the UI. |
[2013-09-27] A Google User: Love it. |
[2013-09-24] A Google User: Been using it over a year This is one of my few reviews and it's because this app has been so helpful and easy to use. Highly recommended. |
[2013-09-18] A Google User: Great app can't be without Best alarm I have had with lots of customization |
[2013-09-11] A Google User: Really good I've been using this app for a long time. On my new galaxy s4 I tried the default alarm for a couple of nights, but quickly purchased this app. It's very customizable and works well. Could be very nice to stream YouTube vids as an alarm. That way you don't have to bother with mp3's. |
[2013-09-08] A Google User: Last few updates very bad |
[2013-09-08] A Google User: Great This app is simply great. The only thing which could use some loving would be the user interface, which is a little dated. |
[2013-09-08] A Google User: Best The best alarm clock app so far. |
[2013-09-06] A Google User: Excellent. Desire 2.2 |
[2013-09-04] A Google User: Very good, but recent crashes Used this alarm for years, I love it. Have noticed recently it has been crashing on my Samsung tab 7 plus, 4.0.4 stock OS. |
[2013-09-04] A Google User: Amazing I love it! |
[2013-09-02] A Google User: Worth the effort The app is complex, no doubt about it - but once you get it set up, you will never user another alarm clock in your life. |
[2013-09-01] A Google User: Excellent alarm features Great only thing I'd like to see is a more appealing app icon. Current one is low resolution and looks Terrible |
[2013-08-31] A Google User: The best on Android even includes tasker/locale functionality. Awesome app. |
[2013-08-27] A Google User: Great app Been using this app for years and still prefer it as my primary alarm |
[2013-08-27] A Google User: Formerly the Best Alarm App It needs a more attractive looking UI. Otherwise, it's tops. I actually stopped using it because of the terrible UI. Just couldn't take it anymore. Caynax is a good alternative. Timely is even better. |
[2013-08-27] A Google User: Love Been using this for almost 3 years as my primary alarm clock! |
[2013-08-26] A Google User: Good features for me I especially like the "gentle" alarm trying to wake you up a while before. Especially if you have flex working hours. Anyway it avoids to wake you up in the middle of a deep sleep phase (which keeps you sleepy all day usually). On the UI... could really do better. |
[2013-08-25] A Google User: Top app |
[2013-08-20] A Google User: Options galore I love this app because it let's me customize to my heart's content. Need a vibrate only alarm that slowly increases in intensity so as to not disturb your partner? No problem. Want to wake up to a song very gently? Easy. I also love how the interface minimizes the number of buttons I have to push to select a time. This app is easily worth the cost. |
[2013-08-20] A Google User: Does what it says. Configuring all the various options can be a little tricky, but its not a big deal and the app runs flawlessly. Have installed it on 2 different phones and never had a missed alarm |
[2013-08-20] A Google User: Ugly User Interface I have been using gentle alarm for the past 2 years. Paid for the full version too. Even though I don't like the user interface, I stuck with it because I like the sleep cycle features and nobody does it as well. That is until Timely Alarm launch yesterday, this morning is the first time I didn't use Gentle Alarm. If Gentle Alarm update their user interface I may consider coming back to it. |
[2013-08-20] A Google User: Great Oops forgot to change review when I got a new phone, sorry, frickin great app. |
[2013-08-19] A Google User: App loads upside down On the Samsung Galaxy GIO this app boots up completely upside down. Started doing this after the last update. Still using it though, it's a great app. |
[2013-08-19] A Google User: The best A holo makeover would be nice! I am glad I purchased this back in the day but with no cosmetic updates it's time to move on. |
[2013-08-17] A Google User: Missing vibrate feature When will my alarm vibrate? Missing this feature for it to be perfect |
[2013-08-17] A Google User: Included mature sounds are buzzers What gives? Scrolling through all the included nature sounds for the pre-alarm, like heartbeat and row boat, and they are all buzzer sounds. This is on the trial and the paid version. What's that about!? Why does it even have the option included? |
[2013-08-16] A Google User: The best alarm. Easy to use and effective. You won't regret getting this app. |
[2013-08-16] A Google User: great alarm clock... best I have found Short of getting up and making breakfast for me, this alarm is as good as it gets. Easy to use, Reliable. Full-featured. I really can't think of any options that are missing. |
[2013-08-14] A Google User: Great app, but looking forward to a ui refresh I feel the same as a lot of the other commenters. I've been using this for years and the last ui refresh was nice, but it's been a while. |
[2013-08-13] A Google User: Awesome Incredibly powerful with loads of options! |
[2013-08-09] A Google User: Works perfect! This is one of the first apps I ever bought when I got my first Android phone 4 years ago and I still use it everyday! In all the time I have used it, I have never had one issue ever. Not one. Great app that works perfectly, highly recommended! |
[2013-08-09] A Google User: The best alarm I have used It always works. Very customizable. Only issues that I see are the interface needs cleaned up and after the last update it will not let me select play lists. |
[2013-08-08] A Google User: You missed an alarm. This is a message that should not exist! If I do not turn off the alarm, then it should keep going for five years if necessary. Period. DO NOT STOP THE ALARM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES UNLESS IT IS SPECIFICALLY DISMISSED! Why is this so hard? |
[2013-08-08] A Google User: Number One! Perfect alarm clock app. Have been using it for years! Worth every penny. |
[2013-08-03] A Google User: One of the best! One of the most useful, functional and well-written apps I have. |
[2013-07-31] A Google User: Yes Does the trick |
[2013-07-30] A Google User: Great app with a couple of nags Wish it had a holiday selection feature for it to automatically be off. Also, could use some sprucing up on the interface visuals. Great app other than that! |
[2013-07-30] A Google User: Very nice i'm using this app for years now and i've never been disappointed but it needs a UI update though.. +works well on JB 4.3 |
[2013-07-29] A Google User: Love it Best alarm app in the market. Very flexible and configurable. |
[2013-07-27] A Google User: Used to be my favorite app Used to be favorite app until it started to keep my phone awake all the time until I forced close it |
[2013-07-23] A Google User: Great alarm except for one glaring problem... There either a) needs to be an option to turn off the night display being the automatic display at night or b) I should be able to access all the alarm features on the night display without having to go back to the default/daytime. Or both. This auto night display thing is REALLY annoying otherwise and didn't use to be a "feature." |
[2013-07-18] A Google User: Wakes me up every time! Pleasantly too I might add. Although it does require the set up to suit your needs |
[2013-07-18] A Google User: Best app, tried them all Got it as FAOTD but decided to re buy it on Play Store. Love it except for the look of the icon, which looks cheesy. Best alarm clock by far. Always works! |
[2013-07-17] A Google User: Wakes me up I tried a few different alarm apps one was my favorite. It has never failed to go off. A couple others I have tried didn't go off every time. |
[2013-07-14] A Google User: Good, could be better When I first bought this app a few years ago, it was great, way ahead of any others of its time. Unfortunately, it hasn't improved substantially since then, and developer doesn't seem as responsive. I will try again to see if I can get a response to some feature requests and update my review accordingly. |
[2013-07-13] A Google User: A great app I have been using for years now and it is excellent. My only comment would be I would like to back up my alarms easily so I can keep them after an upgrade as there is so much configuration possible that it can take a long time to recreate my alarms each time I swap phones. |
[2013-07-12] A Google User: Good Simple and understandable. What other virtues are there in any ap.? |
[2013-07-09] A Google User: ugly but good |
[2013-07-05] A Google User: Запутанные настройки |
[2013-07-03] A Google User: Best alarm app The gimmick of this app, the "pre-alarm", sounds hokey but it really works. Aside from that, what more could you ask? It's reliable and has all the features one would expect from an alarm app. I wish the UI would get updated to Holo (it still has Droid Sans instead of Roboto, that's how dated it is) but I can't complain about the performance. |
[2013-07-03] A Google User: Best feature set Many customizable features, reliable performance on my S4. I like to tweak every little thing, and gentle alarm lets me. Perfect. Better than Alarm Clock Plus |
[2013-06-24] A Google User: Innovative excellent Alarm Lots of good features and very innovative. I love the nature sounds as well as maths challenges to make sure you have woken up. |
[2013-06-23] A Google User: I feel crippled without it Really, not using this would be a notable life change for me. It triggers so much Tasker stuff I'd be lost without it. Love that it supports several other apps (APIs). *Amazing* support; Android developers, for $2 a hit, give me better support than my mortgage lender, cable company, and my car insurance. What's up wit that? |
[2013-06-22] A Google User: Perfect! |
[2013-06-22] A Google User: One of the best android apps in the market. Best alarm app out there. Does as advertised. Has never failed me yet.... |
[2013-06-19] A Google User: Works great and reliably, but interface is dated I've been using this alarm for well-over a year now, and it works great. I love having a folder with my alarm songs in it. The interface needs updated, though. It's been the same since I bought it and could use a holo makeover. |
[2013-06-06] A Google User: The best Best alarm clock app ever. |
[2013-06-03] A Google User: "Safe alarm" option is brilliant I love it but sometimes sleep through it - then the helpful dev pointed out the "safe alarm" option which finally resorts to a loud buzzing, if I still haven't woken. Thanks! |
[2013-06-02] A Google User: Best android alarm I've tested out all major alarms, and this one is the best. The pre-alarm is great. UI is very nice. Great support from developer as well. And has the best alarm widget, it's a small widget with next alarm on it, that I could not find with other alarms. |
[2013-05-30] A Google User: Excellent and Reliable Just perfect. And great support! |
[2013-05-29] A Google User: Battery As previously mentioned, battery drain on my S2 is a real issue post update. Otherwise good app though interface and usability can be better. Please fix. |
[2013-05-27] A Google User: Excellent app I love this app!! It wakes me up every morning. |
[2013-05-27] A Google User: Fabulous and Dependable |
[2013-05-27] A Google User: Too many updates Constant updates are becoming irritating |
[2013-05-27] A Google User: Love it I have been a user for years now. It has never let me down and does not wake my wife up on the morning. Highly recommended! |
[2013-05-27] A Google User: Rock solid! I love this app. I can just set it and forget it. Hasn't failed me yet |
[2013-05-27] A Google User: good great app |
[2013-05-27] A Google User: Best out there Tried several but this is the best. Many option, flexible, reliable. |
[2013-05-26] A Google User: Pretty good Used it for years, but i really think it s missing the QR code scan to stop alarm feature... so i'm switching to another app for now |
[2013-05-26] A Google User: Okay Alarm works well. Terrible icon. Reminds me of a old windows 95 icon... |
[2013-05-26] A Google User: Sad to see this app go downhill This was my very favorite app - one of the few I gladly paid for. It was reliable, rock solid, and flexible. I adored its capacity for customization. Now (after a ton of bad updates) I actually *lose* sleep because I am anxious if it is going to work the next morning. Do I have to go make to a plug-into-the-wall alarm clock? /whine My lock screen sticks. GA no longer opens the app of my choosing upon turning off the alarm. Occasionally, the regular alarm begins in place of the pre-alarm. The alarm fade-in function - my favorite feature - is MIA. Oh, and the alarm? The MP3 file I like to wake up to? Gentle Alarm "forgets" it, replaces it with a question mark, and instead plays....silence...when the alarm is scheduled. But only sometimes. Some days it works. Will it function tomorrow morning? Who knows? That is the exciting thrill a minute of Gentle Alarm. It's like playing the lottery with whether you will wake up in time for work! Whee! |
[2013-05-26] A Google User: Best alarm app I've tried.. This is a really great alarm app. I enjoy waking to a radio stream and this app allows me to do that "gently", with a rising volume. It also has very nice dock display. The only thing that could make the display better is if it had a nice way to show the weather. That would make it awesome. It's got nice large buttons for snoozing or turning off the alarm too. Another wish might be a sleep timer so I could fall asleep to music or a radio station. Anyway, it's well worth the money for the app. Great job. |
[2013-05-24] A Google User: Alarm Wizard please!!! Absolutely brilliant. Only gripe is it can do too much. It needs an alarm wizard for easy setup. |
[2013-05-22] A Google User: as it gets fancy, it gets less reliable skipped daily alarm, entered quick alarm for an earlier time instead. didnt fire, missed webinar. :-( |
[2013-05-22] A Google User: Alarm went off three hours early....and showed it was going to alarm at correct time. It didn't go off. |
[2013-05-22] A Google User: Evo 3D Works great but ui feel lacking |
[2013-05-21] A Google User: Today I missed the alarm. It used to keep going till I dismissed it. Wasn't that the whole point of the app? |
[2013-05-20] A Google User: Great Alarm App Love your app. Thank you. |
[2013-05-19] A Google User: Weekdays are very small Please, update resources for 1080p display resolution |
[2013-05-19] A Google User: Stellar Perfect. Completely customizable. |
[2013-05-19] A Google User: Solid function, lacking form The alarm is amazing and has a ton of great features, but the UI could definitely use an update to Android 4.0+ guidelines. Easily the biggest downside. |
[2013-05-19] A Google User: Love it! Highly customizable and dependable... Been using it for about 3 years now and it's never let me down! Thank you! |
[2013-05-19] A Google User: Why so many permissions? The app is OK, I've had it for years, but today I realize that it can almost control the phone, it has access to all the information in the phone. Is that necessary for an alarm app? |
